Is stuttering purely a motor issue or is it more than that? for example: when I read in my head I actually read it to myself like an invisible voice reading it to me - this is quite a common way of reading silently. Do people who stutter, stutter when reading in their head like this? where does the stutter originate from?

I have social anxiety and ADHD so talking to people or interacting with people in general is hard for me to do so I would definitely have problems if I live there. I hope that anyone who lives there and is struggling because people think they’re a drug addict for whatever reason it is will eventually get help somehow.

Im 31 years old, and i have stuttered my whole life. There are times when the stuttering is mild, and there are times when it's very severe. It has affected me in many ways, but it had the most impact in my professional career and my relationships with many people. It is just very hard to communicate, and i can't blame them if they do not have the patience to listen. But i got used to those things e.g. when a person im talking to suddenly ignores me and turn their back when im still speaking, when a person would repeatedly ask to the other person in the room what did i say, or when people say things that hurt. If you're reading this, know that you're not alone, and don't ever feel bad. I have actually failed tests, dropped courses in college, failed job interviews and other opportunities. But after i have been diagnpsed with a really bad health situation, i have come to realize there are many other problems worse than stuttering.. and it is best to appreciate and be grateful that at least we are now alive. Being able to breathe at this very moment is enough to say you are still blessed, and you can always choose to be happy.

I’m 26-years-old fresh university grad. With immaculate credentials, however naturally struggling to overcome the interview stage due to my moderate-to-severe stammering. Let me share my conclusions through years of therapy, years of working with my psyche and years of failure, embarrassment and (speaking) anxiety - that stuttering is our curse for perfection. Only when we reach our perfect-self, that is, through vigorous exercise routine, balanced diet, strict sleeping schedule and discipline in every area that we can moderate the dysfluency. The closer we are to “perfection”, the more confidence we gain and the less stammering is present. Last but not least, before any job interview I would read aloud for 5-10mins to exercise and relax my jaw/lip/tongue muscles. This routine can be implemented daily and does help both physically and psychologically, because stuttering is a combination of both.

I was a welder for many years and I breathed a lot of heavy metals welding smoke. Nickel, Manganese, cobalt etc.. Back when I did hard plate Tig welding, (hard surfacing of internal safe components). It eventually started effecting my fine motor skills. I began having trouble picking up coins with my fingers, also my speech became slurred, I had a mild random stutter and sometimes had to really concentrate on forming my mouth and tongue in order to sound out some words. Mostly words that started with, or had R, W or M in them. It was really frustrating because it's like my mouth and tongue just refused to cooperate with my brain and wouldnt operate correctly at certain times. It was due to improper ventilation, inadequate smoke removal system. I quit the job and my issue slowly, gradually went away for the most part. Not totally, but mostly. It was almost like getting regularly fumed in a closed car with the exhaust hose ran in through the window. It wasn't uncommon for a welder to fall asleep at his station while welding and accidentally touch his tungsten electrode to his welding tube ("rod"). Which would sometimes blow you back in the chair and slam you against the wall behind you. Just from the sudden electrical shock. We used to joke about it. But now days it makes me think of the Townes Van Zandt song "Lungs."

Also, as a note from a linguist... I imagine being Dutch, English is not your native tongue, so it's impressive you had the courage to speak it here with a stutter, given the unfair confidence debuff you can develop from stuttering. Many kudos!

I stutter and let me tell you!!!!! It’s a struggle day to day!!! Makes u not want to talk to people or interact because of it. Finding people that accept you cause of it is hard cause u try not to show it especially wen it comes to dateing. I’ve came to terms that this is me and I just have to make the best of my life and not worry bout people accepting me.

It really helps if you are this beautiful. The fear of stuttering is the main cause of stuttering. with age comes confidence or not being as self conscious.

I also have a stutter. There are several letters that trigger stuttering. In my case the letters "A, T, P" at the beginning of the word. If these symptoms appear, I usually replace them with words that are easy to pronounce

Didn’t finish my comment. Dad would drop first letter of last name saying the rest then tell the person to add a D to the front. Anytime he needed help on the phone he would motion for me. His brother and sister also had a stutter (my Aunt and Uncle). My Aunt HATED if anyone finished her words or sentences for her. I was in such a habit of helping Dad it was 2nd nature to help anyone with a stutter. Some people appreciated the help, some didn’t want help. And it is physically exhausting for the person with the stutter. It takes a lot of breath and holding breath to get out their words. Bless this girl for taking in her fear of this interview.

I stutter about the same as her on my bad days, and better on my good days. I’ve found being well rested helps dramatically, and mustering confidence is key. I’m actually a complete extrovert and work in a heavy speaking profession-presentations, negotiating, reading portions of docs to audiences. No one cares as there are a surprisingly large number of good people, especially in educated circles. Only idiots and bullies from highschool make fun of stutters or people with disabilities/weaknesses, and 9/10 bullies usually don’t go very far in life.

10/10 bullies bully because they have something wrong with them and it makes them feel better about themselves. Maybe they are bullied too, family issues, and for a ton of other reasons and it's their coping mechanism. I honestly never minded when someone would bully me because I knew they were going through something and if that's what they needed to do to make themselves feel better, go for it... I can deal with being a punching bag. I never let it bother me knowing their reason for bullying me was likely worse than whatever they were trying to make me feel about.

I stuttered a lot in my childhood. I don't know in English but in my country there is a doctor called Logoped, (speech therapist) who basicly teaches you to slowly speak that you dont stutter. I reccomend that you see a speech therapist to help with your stuttering
