I did a custom build on my Specialized Chisel to make it the ultimate 'Snowdonia Special' for the new Cycling UK / National Resources Wales "Traws Eryri" bike packing route. What worked out, what didn't and is an XC hardtail the best choice for this breathtaking - in every sense of the word - adventure across Wild Wales?
Thanks to Specialized for the frame loan and Giro Cycling UK, Peaty’s Products, Crud XL Fenders, Torq Nutrition and Hebtroco for supporting the channel. That's pretty much how I've got my highball set up. I have to say on the road it rolls fast enough, but when you hit the rough it is just easier to ride than a drop bar gravel bike, and for me that's more fun.

I wasn't looking for a hardtail, but almost by accident ended up with a Chisel after watching Guy's earlier videos on this bike, noticing they were on sale and idly wondered about getting a cheap one and replacing the cheaper bits gradually to lighten it up. Then I came across a mint second hand one built up to pretty much my exact and quite specific dream specs at a bargain price. I've barely used my other very lovely bikes since I got the Chisel and can concur it's also an excellent bikepacking rig. Even fully laden with a Tailfin setup out back and an Ortlieb QR on bars, it rips down descents and lies down twisty singletrack. Super fast on both steep technical trails and tarmac. I run Barzo front and Mezcal rear and can fully appreciate why folk who race bikepacking events use these tyres now. First MTB tyre I've used that that I've not felt to be a literal drag on road. Even the saddle that came with the Chisel [Specialized Phenom] was so good, I replaced the saddles I'd used for very many years with the Phenom on my other bikes too. It's a hidden gem in Specialized's lineup. And not stupidly overpriced too.

Love and hate this fella all at the same time. He costs me a bloody fortune 😂 but I always end up with a great bike. Just bought a Chisel following Guys videos. Changed all from standard so far (in a week) other than the stem, brakes and cassette. Took it out tonight around Harrogate on a group ride. This thing will make you go fast on sections you haven’t before and you don’t need to worry about fillings or caps. It smooths things out so well. GX groupset, Hunt Race XC wheels and a set of SID forks Stif found in a back room on offer have kept the overall build low. Simply the best XC hard tail frame I’ve had

There’s nothing super techy, so those tires would be fine if you’re steady on the obvious rocky bits. The lower the gearing the better though as there are some long steep hills.

Mad that this popped up today as I'm looking at getting an XC hardtail again (miss doing these type of rides). The Chisel is a contender along with a Canyon Exceed CF. Looking around the £1500 range with the view of upgrading some of the parts with spares I have. Miss my fitness and the lightweight nature of this type of bike :)

Loving the Chisel content Guy. You've showcased it's flexibility - from speedy gravel, to XC, to bikepacking. Out of interest what fork do you think might be better suited for bikepacking?
@GuyKesTV
@GuyKesTV 10 ай бұрын
I’d probably stick with a basic SID or Fox 32. The frame is so fluid it’s not going to make much use of anything heavier. The skinnier forks do a great job of adding some extra fatigue reduction while flex. I wouldn’t bother going expensive on the damper either as the nuances of finer control will be lost once you’re loaded. Plus most of the fancy XC forks have downsized dampers to save weight when you want more oil for long term reliability

I liked the look of this bike, rode one round a car park and it felt fast and nimble. I usually ride a Sonder Camino for bike packing and orange five for hooning round the woods etc, but was wondering if this bike could do the rougher bikepacking routes and also be okay around the woods given some of the obstacles that seem to be appearing on modern xc courses but never had the chance to test one on steep route rocky terrain. Have you taken your out for a thrash and how would it compare with something like an orange crush. Sorry lots of questions but you have got me thinking

Buy one. I bought the frame, same as Guys ( but red) before I saw his videos, 21 model, hope wheels n hubs, Judy gold forks and XT group set....11.5kg, but climbs and rolls so easily, totally impressed. Done several off road sportives including HONC dropped curly bar groadies on steep rough ground ascents and down hills with ease. Obviously not on the flat road sections. Would like to get a Kg of weight off to do Dirty Reiver , perhaps SID fork ? Otherwise doesnt need to be über light r to tackle most stuff, and to be honest having the ali wheels and heavier forks gives it that robust security on rocky descents / bloody potholes!. Get one you wont regret it.

@@GuyKesTV thanks for the message back on this. Yeah that would be a great comparison for sure. great video Guy! I have a limited edition purple chisel that I built up with my dream spec (XTR, roval wheels, fox step cast). I love it but have been wondering about "upgrading" to a Ti or 853 frame at some point. Do you really rate this frame better that Ti bikes you've ridden?
@GuyKesTV
@GuyKesTV 7 ай бұрын
Yep, it outrides every Ti frame I’ve ridden, even the ones that felt lovely until they tore apart. I’m struggling to think of a comparable 853 bike outside custom builds too as most are ‘trail geometry’ which tends to also mean larger gauge tubes and a more solid ride. If you’re already on a dream build Chisel I genuinely can’t think of a way to scratch that shopping itch without potentially going backwards 🤷‍♂️

Yes it’s the SL and those are 2.35 but they’re pretty wide at 63mm. That’s the official limit for the forks is 2.35in but most 2.4s are fine as they’re undersized.

What do you think about this notion that these aluminum frames don't last long compared to carbon steel or titanium. I feel the welds on the Chisel eliminate the weak areas you find fatigue and cracks in the aluminum. I have this bike and I have to say this bike is very fast and stiff. Have you noticed any differences in the frame performance? I hope you respond to these questions and thank you if you do respond. I follow your channel. You are very good and entertaining with great information. Thank you!
@GuyKesTV
@GuyKesTV 5 ай бұрын
It's been a long time since I've seen a frame fail just through riding rather than crashing apart from titanium ones. Steel used to be bad too but they've got a lot tougher since the CEN standards were bought in. I've certainly not heard any stories of Chisels failing and the bike still rode as well as it did when my friend Graham bought it as it did when brand new. I'll obviously update if Graham does have an issue but I'd be surprised as most frame failures happen early as they're due to manufacturing defects not fatigue.
@Froggy-jn9mu
@Froggy-jn9mu 5 ай бұрын
@GuyKesTV thank you so much for replying. I completely agree with you. Frames are not like the old large tube aluminum Cannondales of the late 80s. All these people are writing articles like they are experts in metallurgy. I still have not seen anyone race on Titanium, but I have seen them race on Aluminum. I never see these guys complain about its aluminum frame, and it's not as good as carbon or it's so uncomfortable. The Chisel is ungodly fast, stiff where it should be but comfortable for your rear end. The technology and time they put in this frame are very obvious but may not know because their eyes only focus on carbon. Has carbon failed? Oh, very much, yes! Is it weak? Maybe we need to address that elephant in the room. I say yes. Is it impact resistant? Absolutely not! That top tube has folded up on itself many times. It might be light and stiff but durable? Engineered for obsolescence? Maybe. But metal in manufacturing has become so amazingly good. No metal is like it used to be 20 years ago, and to judge metal, like is at the same standards is just disinformation. It's not just what metal it is, but how they work with it and keeping its metallurgical properties or even changing them for the better. I think no one writes on this subject for fear of hurting the carbon frame market. Sorry for the typos, but I wrote all this with my fat thumbs. Thanks for your replies.
