Specialized HardRock: Fixing a DYI Disaster

In this video, I take on the challenge of fixing a Specialized HardRock that has had some DYI shenanigans done to it. As you'll see, there were a mix match of incompatible parts that didn’t work together, but I wasn't deterred - I was determined to get this bike back on the road.
Throughout the video, you will see the full disassembly and reassembly with new compatible components. I hope that this will bring you inspiration to try facing similar challenges no mater what they are.

I love vintage Hard Rocks. The geometry is comfortable and the steel frame is durable. Sorry that thing was such a mess. Glad you were able to restore it to its former glory and enjoy it. Happy trails!

Probably not. hard Rocks came with 195 tires

I have a confession to make. I may be a DYI dumb @ss... I got an IM from the buyer of this bike yesterday after selling it to him. The chain fell off mid-ride. I did not install a new chain during the build. He was only a few miles from me walking the bike home, I told him I would meet him and install a new chain. Within 30 minutes I was there and put a new chain on. Thats not the DYI dumb @ss part. When he continued his ride home, the non-drive side crank arm fell off. I didn't screw on the bolt tight enough and the arm worked its way off. 😱I need to slow down on these builds and take my time. He was able to re-attach the crank, but I feel really bad about the situation. Has this ever happened to any one of you as a buyer or seller?

Nice job! So it "just" required an appropriate cassette paired with new brake/shifters and cable routes. How does it perform now?

Hi! Nice video. I am currently working on my bike and my vbrakes aren’t working quite right. Does it matter which caliper goes where? I think I have them positioned wrong on wrong sides of the bike, like I have a front one on the back or something. But when I looked at them they seemed to be the same looking so I figured it wouldn’t matter. Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks for watching! I don’t think it matters which side they go on (front vs back). Hard to say what’s going on without having my eyes and hands on your bike. Good luck Im sure will figure it out!!

Maybe you mixed up Cantilever and V-Brake parts, like a V-Brake with Cantilever levers?

Thanks for watching! My plan for the bike is to flip it for a small profit, so new tires would probably price the bike out of the market. I currently have around $85 into this build, and putting $50 worth of rubber into it would eat any profit I may make. I'll let the new owner replace them if they want. If I were to keep it, I would probably replace them. Again, Thanks for watching!
