Great review Jason! I ride a current gen SJ EVO & came from a 2019 Trek Fuel EX 9.7. The SJ climbs much better than the Fuel EX. I can confidently get up sections where I struggled on the Fuel. With that said, I feel the Fuel was better gettin the frt lifted over obstacles , where as the EVO just plows thru everything & soaks up the chunk with no issues. Another thing I love abt my EVO is the fit. At 5’11” the S4 fits perfect. Some companies transition M & L around 5-10, 5-11 so a M will fit but feel a bit small & a L will fit but feel a bit big. The S4 fits me perfect

Jason, you nailed it. I also own both and built them up from frames (XT builds). To add to your observations, the SJ does have great geometry but you can get the EVO pretty close in high/steep config. The EVO rear suspension is more sorted as far as support. The SJ is definitely a little more work to find the sweet spot. Most will run the lever in the middle. I also have that open mode adjust in 3 to add a bit more support. It’s more prone to bobbing than the EVO. I run my SJ as an XC endurance bike but, like you, reach for the EVO more. The SJ frame is definitely more flexy where the EVO just feels more solid. If I had to own one it would be the EVO simply for the same reason you said, it can do everything. Recently had a couple big days in Quebec with lots of climbing. I took the EVO because the downs were rough, steep and demanding.

Interesting. Thanks! I've been running the Stumpy compression in the 2 setting but leave the lever open... I can see it would be a lot better climbing in the middle setting... maybe that's the ticket. I'm just so used to riding Ibis, Pivot and Yeti where you don't have to touch a knob for climbing... just run everything open. I'll give it a try

100% agree with the shock on the Stumpy. I think it was underspec'd with an XC shock. I ended up putting a float x on mine and paired it with a 150mm 36 fox fork. Threw the flip chip in the high position to adjust for that extra 10mm and balance out the geo. That new combo really transformed the mighty lil Stump into a hyper aggressive trail bike. Thanks for the video!

Your bike sound cool. I just for the first time this morning put the +1/-1 head tube cup in my Stumpy EVO. Adjusts the geo to 65.5 degree HTA. For sure makes the bike feel more like the Stumpjumper and I would guess a lot more like your bike. It was fun. I'll leave it there for the next few rides

@@sdbuonannob7420100% more damped. In my experience, the sepc'd dps shock on my bike would lose it's damping 2 min into a descent and would be almost too hot to the touch at the end of a run and I only weigh 150lbs so that was shocking. The Float X really helped with the heat and really woke up the bike in a good way. Now i can charge harder knowing I have a beefed up supported rear end with more damping and traction. Totally worth the $500 upgrade.

"It's just such a great time to be a mountain biker!" This should be your trademarked tagline. You've been saying it consistently for years and years. I am on a Stumpy EVO and the massive range of geo settings (that make a significant difference in ride feel) keeps the bike feeling new and exciting for me. I thought it was gimmicky at first, but it has really grown on me. Also, I came off a Hightower LT and was immediately amazed at how the Stumpy didn't get hung up on anything. On the way up it wasn't bucking and throwing me off balance on square edges. On the downhill it picks up speed so much better. The sensation of getting pulled back in consistently chunky sections is non-existent. It just opens up and trucks through it all. Great bike! The one con I have in my comparison between the Hightower LT and Stumpy Evo is the feel of the carbon. The Santa Cruz carbon layup always felt bombproof to me. The stumpy feels a bit more eggshelly, likely due to their attempt to save weight. I have seen a number of people posting about cracking the frame on the downtube by the bottom bracket. I purchased a Rockguardz downtube protector to hopefully give it a bit more resilience if I kick up a rock or make a bad line choice at some point.

I bought the Stumpjumper Comp. I found the rear suspension lacked a bit of support and went through its travel quite quickly. I replaced the standard volume reducer with the maximum and increased the pressure to about 200psi, I'm about 175lbs. The suspension still feel supple but crucially it feels way more supportive and doesn't go through its travel as easy as it did in standard form. I also increased the front travel by 10mm with a new air shaft. These changes have made the bike feel more capable on a wider range of terrain but hasn't effected the climbing. However compared to m 2009 Cannondale Prophet it feel heavy on the climbs.

I did buy the Stumpjumper Carbon Comp four Months ago in Switzerland S4 in the Gloss White/Black version. The Shop sold me this Bike for 2800 CHF (3130 US / 2800 Euro). which is a absolutely insane... price for this bike. I usually buy Scott Genius Bikes, but the new 2023 version with the hidden rear shock are expensive. I did instal a Dirtskirt protection on the rear carbon linkage gap to protect it from rocks. I also did replace the Butcher T9 front tire with a ground control grit t7 and Fast Trak t5 for faster rolling speed and save up the butcher for the next Winter. I still wait for the Bike shop to call me and tell be they made a mistake with the price, even the box the bike came in had a sticker on it with 6000 Dollar. 😅 This Bike is a dream😊

I’m 3 rides in, in all different terrain and scenarios, and really am pretty underwhelmed/unhappy with the bike as a whole. The Transition Spur is comparable to the SCOTT Spark and a fantastic RC/Trail Bike for sure. But definitely not comparable with the Regular Stumpy in my opinion. So quick story: Bought my first full suspension in 2019 with a stumpy LT. Hated how sluggish (was also out of shape) it felt. Just felt oafy (sp?). Felt way over biked for pedaling trails. Sold it and bought an epic Evo. Great bike but now felt a bit under biked lol. Took advantage of the inflated prices and sold it. I LAMENTED over which stumpy to get. Normal logic said to go to the regular stumpy. I hated the regular stumpy colors (lol) and liked the flat carbon in the evo (hear me out). I bought the Evo as it just felt safer. AND it pedaled better than the 2019 stumpy LT! Point is i can only have ONE mtb to cover all bases. The Evo pedals well enough for chill trails esp at the 65.5° head tube angle. And now I’m still wondering if I made the right move. Over the winter I bought carbon Roval control wheels to bring down the rotational wt for the pedal days with ground controls front and back. For aggressive days I’ll go with the stock setup. I *think* this will be the best option for one bike. I have yet to get a real ride in with the new wheels so I’m looking forward. I’m 6’2” 220 lbs and bought the s5. It’s a big bike but I still maintain it feels so much better than my 2019 stumpy especially when I go with a higher than recommended psi in the shocks and tires. It already naturally has much less bob while pedaling. Am I thinking through this correctly? Thanks for your comparison!

Stumpy vs epic evo ?
@marksandoval5361
@marksandoval5361 11 ай бұрын
Put the same tires on both bikes, then steepen the adjustable geo on the Stumpy EVO so that it is same as the Stumpy. The Stumpy EVO is going to be superior to the Stumpy every time. The EVO just tracks the ground so much better, corners so much better, handles rough ground so much better, and is a much better do-it-all bike. For an added bonus, you can slacken the geo, install aggressive rubber, and end up with an Enduro/Bikepark bike. I bought my $6300 carbon Stumpy EVO Expert on sale for $4700. With lighter faster-rolling tires (2.6 Rekon, 2.6 Ikon, both 60tpi), it weighs 31 pounds. I think of it as my long-travel Downcountry bike. I just can't believe how good the Stumpy EVO is at that price point. I've come to the the conclusion that longer-travel bikes with geo that isn't overly progressive, lighter faster-rolling tires, and that pedal and climb efficiently, can make some of the best Trail (and even Downcountry) bikes. A long-travel bike doesn't have to be a heavy slacked out sled with squishy suspension and burly tires that's only good for winch and plummet style riding. The EVO can be that, but a with little geo adjusting and the right rubber it can also be an amazing Trailbike. I was just at my local Specialized dealer and nearly every bike is 25% off.

I enjoy our reviews (even though you tend to make every bike/view every bike from an XC lens) but I don't get the massive Yeti fanboyism. Probably the most overrated MTB brand on the market. The Geo Adjust is a massive feature on the Stumpjumper EVO vs. the SB140 (which costs 30% more, and Specialized bikes aren't even fantastic value.) The SB140 was pretty much the worst bike in the 2023 Pinkbike Field test... Less efficient than the new Norco Fluid even though it weighs less, slower downhill than the Norco despite having more travel and costs 2.5x more. Yetis are one of the most annoying bikes to work on. NSMB even did a whole article showcasing how annoying it is to do a bearing swap and the infinity link is some of the most labour intensive things to keep running (like we need more things to maintain on a dually?).
