I believe my grandmother had a Buick similar to this. Rode in it as a kid in the 80's. She died in 1991. Is there any way to search old vehicle registration records to find out exactly what car she had? It would be nice to own a similar example. NJ registered. I'd love to know the year make model and VIN. Any tips?

Don't know what you've got until it's gone...most of these were trashed by second owners who were looking for a cheap ride and didn't give a crap. Where I came from, many became lowriders...and up north, they would have rusted out. Also, those GM dashboards from the 80's couldn't handle much sun exposure before cracking. Those plush seats were incredible!

In the spring of 1983, our neighbors got a new Buick Electra Park Avenue. It was some kind of dark metallic gray. It was special ordered It had a different inside door handles. It had bars for the interior door handles. I thought it was one of the most beautiful cars I had ever seen. I wish I would have taken pictures of it. Sadly the car was a diesel and they had problems with it. They traded it in for a 1984 model. It was brown and it wasn't as pretty.

If your in the market for a "classic" Park Ave, THIS IS THE ONE TO OWN!! I owned a mint gorgeous condition 1983 Buick Electra Park Ave. The biggest downfall of my 1983 Park Ave was it had the 252 cubic inch V6. At only 125 hp it barely moved my barge on the waterway. Oops! I mean highway. With the pillow top velour seating, it made the Captains Quarters a comfort for the cruise. I was so pissed though at Buick for putting a small under powered V6 motor in some of their 18 ft. "flagship" model. Kids on skateboards were passing me!

We had a 77 sedan with the Olds 403, in the same color. That dark brown. Interesting story about the car: my dad purchased it in 1982. He got it for dirt cheap because the car was a buy back car (lemon). He had a bud who worked at a Buick/Olds/Pontiac dealer. The car had under 10k miles but began to exhibit lack of power, and shifting problems. The engine, carb, and transmission were replaced under warranty, but still the problem persisted. Finally, the dealer bought it back, and left it on the lot. My dad got wind of it, and decided to take a gamble on it (he was a Ford diesel tech his whole life). He eventually fixed it. It was a bad catalytic converter. Back then that was an unheard of device. 77 was the first year for such equipment on many vehicles. The cat would melt, and plug the exhaust. The plugged up exhaust would not allow the engine to breathe, and as such would affect vacuum output, not allowing the transmission to shift. He gutted it, and we owned it until 1998 when my mom finally offloaded it. Had over 180k miles still with the original alternator (sans VR), ac compressor, and radiator...

The Park Avenue of this time period was something of a dark horse. I don't know how many of these were sold back in '83, but there have never been many in my region. Aside from stylistic features, for me, what set this car apart from its Oldsmobile and Cadillac cousins was its fabulously fluffy pillow velour seats. I had an '88 Park Avenue a long time ago. I always thought the moon glow opera lamp added so much class and mystery to these cars as they floated down a dark street. I'm a huge fan of the standard Park Avenue sedan as well as its station wagon sibling, the Electra Wagon. Very fine specimen you've got here. I wish you were local or I would make an offer. I have a nice big garage for it to be stored in while it's not in use.

I made many winter trips from Michigan to Florida in them. I drove the 79 until about 1993 and put 190,000 plus miles on it. I now own 2 Cadillacs (I was born on Cadillac Blvd. in Detroit, and figure that owning Caddy’s is my destiny) and they’re really nice cars, but their seats just don’t match up to the old Buicks.

If GM built that today, rather than trying to be a MB or BMW, GM would sell every one. America Roads are built for that type of car. We’re not Europe
@MegaFister69
@MegaFister69 4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately they wouldn't. I live in Germany, the distances are relatively short (half the size of california), the roads are often curvy but in good condition. Exactly the opposite of the USA. So, you can use these more sporty and nimble BMW's, Audi's etc. (the lack of a speed limit helps, too). But for the USA, they are relatively useless. Nobody will ever use the power and the firm ride is just annoying on longer road trips. But, fore some reason, americans buy them anyway. Lincoln's new Continental has a really comfortable ride and is somewhat oldschool (an has the nicest interior in my opinion) but is also a huge sales flop. I often hear americans complaning about the lack of a really comfortable cars, but on the other side you don't buy them. The manufactures mostly deliver what people like to buy...

@@MegaFister69 I drove a 5-speed, 1984 Peugeot 505 base model for over 25 years in TX. Mid size. Only 100 hp, but a joy to drive. Nimble in the city, and not at all tiring on longer trips.
