About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!

I have a few guitars with no fret markers, but they all have them on the side of the neck, so you still know where the 5th, 7th, 9th, 12th etc. still are. No need to do it "by feel"

What gauges do you use on your bottom 4 strings? I just bought my first 7, and I keep trying to put the equivalent of light/heavy hybrids on it. But straight up only Ernie Ball and Stringjoy sell them (10-64, which is 10-52 + a 64) and only online. Is there something about 7-strings I don't know? Are gummier strings better on them, for some reason? The lighter strings are super common, but it's hard to find heavier ones.
@GordonHeaney
@GordonHeaney Жыл бұрын
@@pickledparsleyparty I know you didn't ask me, but I have 4 seven string guitars, 2 8 string guitars and 2 downtuned 6 strings, so I know a little about this. With a seven string, there's no need to buy heavy/light strings, unless you like them or you want to downtune the whole guitar. I have 10's on all of mine, no issue. 9's would be fine too, as long as you don't pick too hard. I do, however, have thick gauge strings (low) and normal (high) for my downtuned 6 strings (down tuned to drop C). This is to maintain the tension on the neck, as the E is downtuned 4 steps. So to answer your question, if you're planning to keep the tuning (or even drop the B to an A, which is what I do), there's no need to use heavy/light string sets, unless you pick really hard, and/or you like the sound of thicker gauges.

@HCkev

I've got a JS32 Rhoads, the fit and finish isn't completely flawless(the inlays in my case weren't perfectly filled) and there's areas where they clearly cut costs (such as the generic plastic nut or the tuners, which has some play into them when its time to tune), but nothing deal breaker for that price range. The Jackson branded pickups are actually decent. And most importantly, it plays very well (same neck feel as my much more expensive MIJ Jackson) and stays in tune fairly well. Slight neck dive (similar to the Solar in the video) and high fret access can be a challenge (as there is no cutout and it's a basic bolt-on that hasn't been shaped for fret access). Despite being an entry level guitar, I wouldn't be afraid of using it live, looks great and doesn't look like an entry model guitar (aside from the pickups, which the Jackson logos are the giveaway), in fact, that'd be a perfect touring guitar as I wouldn't be afraid to damage it as it's inexpensive but still plays well.

Bought my 1st solar guitar few months ago. Its a swamp ash 7 string with aebony neck. I have an ibanez made with same. The solar was $850 US and the Ibanez was $1300. The solar looks better, sounds better, is lighter (easier on shoulder), and the solar has better sustain. The only things that are better on my ibanez is the feel of the neck and the solar didnt have locking tuners but with the price difference thats understandable. Ive long been an ibanez fanboy but solar guitars just completely ruined that for me in a good way :)

My G-series Solar had issues with fretboard cracks (that pointy inlay doesn't help at all, I think it makes fretboard more prone to cracking), and they refused to exchange it. Nothing that cannot be fixed, but it sucked to encounter issues on a brand new guitar. But! I find myself playing Solar more than any guitar I own, in terms of ease of and sound it provides - it is unsurpassed, exactly what I need. The moral of the story? If I'd buy a new Solar, I'd probably go to the store where I can physically check the guitar with my eyes.

Great video review Glenn I think the Solar is sick especially for the money, other than some locking tuners , this V kicks ass.

What was up with audio in the intro song? It sounded like a 64kbs mp3 or something, or may some sort of modulation effect?

Very noice!! I like their lime burst option, might actually get that one, sounds pretty good and metal-y. I wonder if the neckdive is mitigated once you plug in the jack, which is way down at the bottom leg?

The pics on the Thomann link show thumbwheel locking tuners on this model. Where were this and the LTD when I went through my 'I like playing V's' phase? These look like they're great!

I'd love to try one of these Solar V's, or any Solar really. Quick question, what's the neck profile like? I've got a Jackson Randy Rhoads Concept (JRR-94) which has a lovely neck and is my go-to V, any idea how it compares to something like that? Also, I build my own guitars too and I would imagine that the problem with those inlays could be down to atmospheric conditions and the coefficients of expansion between the two materials, I'm guessing the fretboards are ebony and the inlays some type of Abalone/MOP type of thing? Perhaps some regular fretboard treatments will keep this sort of issue at bay? Or it may just be that the selected woods aren't fully seasoned enough and still move/open up? Food for thought.

I love this Solar V body design. The depth of the body looks satisfying. The trimmed edges look cool and friendly to grab. Looks perfect to rest on the knee.

Hey Glenn, I've been thinking of getting a v for a while and i love the shape of the solar, and the splatter finish, I'm looking for a TOM bridge and 24 frets, would you recommend any other guitars over this for those specs? Thanks in advance.

That guitar sounds as angry as it looks! Love it. But in all seriousness, the rig you’re running this guitar through sounds absolutely stellar. Cheers.
