Hi everyone and welcome back to the shack. In this video we'll be installing some hardware upgrades to our Spectrum Next, including memory, a wi-fi module and a Raspberry Pi Zero.
We'll take you step by step through the process of installation and testing.
This is all making the way for part three when we'll be setting up our development environment in order that we can start to use and develop for the machine.
Please leave your comments and feedback, and of course please subscribe if you like my content.
Thanks for watching!

You mentioned how easy it is to damage plastic threads. Good practice when replacing screws, especially small ones, is to locate the screw and applying a little pressure turn it slowly anti-clockwise until you feel it click. The screw has registered with the thread and will be guided in without fear of it ‘crossing’ as you screw down. And as you say “not too tight “. BTW, another nice and very informative video.

Also on the latest distro, you can use .term from the command line rather than terminex.snx. the dotcommand version will allow you to exit back to NextZXOS with sym+shift+q

Need a mod to make the colored stripes light up. When you open the case we can see that they are just colored pieces pressed into rivet holes. Could replace with light-carrying plastic and mount LEDs inside.

Eeek! Please support the board underneath when you press in those memory chips, the board is 4 layers and flexing like that could damage an internal trace.

@@TheRetroShack It doesnt take much force to potentially break the tracks - I know two boards that were damaged due to this.

Do you need to format the SD card in the PI to any specific format before slotting in?

So could you skip the ESP if you add a Pi ZeroW?
@TheRetroShack
@TheRetroShack 3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately not at this point :( Luckily a Pi Zero plus an ESP is about the same price as a Pi Zero W :)
@DavidSiebert
@DavidSiebert 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheRetroShack True but you are probably going to want to use a PiZeroW anyway so you have a wife network connection for your pi. The ESP does have an advantage in boot speed over the pi for sure so you might still want both. Now if they could arrange for the ESP to also be the real-time clock so no need to solder on the clock and just for fun let the pi set up a dir to share with the Next that you could load files on to over the network that would be very cool. I would have to look at the pineouts for the pi but if nothing else you could use a spi interface between the pi and the next to handle the data transfers.
