Fun movie. And will always remind me of this classic Homer Simpson quote: "I saw this in a movie about a bus that had to speed around the city, keeping its speed over fifty, and if its speed dropped, it would explode! I think it was called "The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down."

Came here to make the same recommendation. The original Point Break is my jam. A lot like Limitless, but substantially more realistic, yet still fully over the top. The remake has undoubtedly great stunts, seriously, but the plot falls flat and does a big disservice to the original. They should've just made a kick ass stunt movie, like all that ski porn from Warren Miller. The original Point Break is still an incredible watch.

Hey Lauren, Fun Fact: The missing highway was an actual part of the unfinished 105 highway when they were building it. The movie production was taking place at the same time and the directors and writers incorporated it into the movie. The opportunity was too good to pass up as a once-in-a-lifetime movie moment. In "Matrix (2) Reloaded", you're gonna see the modern way to get highway car chase drama.

I recommend watching "Point Break" with Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayzee. Speed is kinda non-stop action, whereas Point Break is more of a spiritual Thriller with 2 amazing actors in their prime.

Historically, this role is what really helped transition Keanu out of the "stoner Ted" mold from Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventures and into bigger things. Without Speed, there never would have been The Matrix. Another Keanu film I would recommend that was released around that time is The Devil's Advocate (1997), which also features Al Pacino and Charlize Theron.

Back in the 80s and 90s you could see a lot of these car stunts. Driving on two wheels, doing jumps - "Speed" raised the bar on some of them. But it wasn't even the most outragous movie moments. At least they took a real bus and drove it over a real ramp, with some smart editing, no CGI. "The Fall Guy" with Lee Majors was an 80s TV show about a stuntman's side hustle as a bounty hunter, quite popular at the time. Had they made the show a decade later, they surely would have included footage from this film into the series.

@@Cau_No I remembered watching "The Fall Guy" As for the bus jumping that 50 foot gap in the freeway not being CGI, it actually was, at least the landing part of it was Because the bts of the stunts in "Speed" shows that the section of freeway that was finished in the scene where the bus cleared that gap before they'd editing had shown the bus landing on roadway being well beyond where it lands in the final cut of the movie
@Cau_No
@Cau_No Жыл бұрын
@@karlsmith2570 That's called VFX (Visual Effects), not CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) A lot of people don't know the difference anymore. Yes, they cheated, but they used editing techniques like Matte and Compositing, which now also are done all digital. At least they already knew how to do wire removal since Terminator 2. And Jurassic Park came out only the year before.

One of my favorite Keanu Reeves action movies! Before Reeves was cast as the hero, Harrison Ford, Kurt Russell, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Tom Cruise, Charlie Sheen, Tom Hanks, Alec Baldwin and Jeff Bridges were considered. Jack Nicholson, Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro were considered for the villain Meryl Streep, Ellen DeGeneres, and Halle Berry were considered for Annie. The film was a box office and critical success making $350 million dollars against a $40 million dollar budget. It won Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing at the 1995 Academy Awards. It's now considered to be one of the best action movies ever made.

There was a ramp, but for some reason it wasn't in all the shots. If you look closely when it's just starting to angle up, you notice a pile of boards it hits. But ya, I get that the scene was still so rediculous that it pulls you out of the movie for a while.

20:25 - That's the Uvalde question, right? Yeah... It's been said that a truly great movie is one that has 3 great scenes and *no bad scenes* and, unfortunately, the "Flying Bus" scene is that bad scene that disqualifies Speed for that title nomination (... Well, that and when one considers that if Jack was able to accelerate the Subway car, then that means that *decelerating* it was *also* a functioning option...Then that makes two bad scenes!!) But it is still a top notch, fun action movie! If you want an even greater Sandra Bullock performance in an action movie, I highly recommend: Demolition Man (1993), Staring Sylvester Stallone and Westey Snipes.

Great video, Laurenn! Your reaction to the bus jumping the gap was hilarious! I think everyone has a problem with that part of the movie. You're also going to find that most people will agree with you about Keanu's acting here. Even he admits that he's not a very good actor, and it really shows in his early films. He's gotten much better over the years,but anything from the 90s will be tough to watch with the exception of The Matrix, and he wasn't exactly giving an Oscar worthy performance there either. He's actually not too terrible in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, but that has more to do with the character than his ability as an actor. You'll also want to watch Demolition Man to see Sandra Bullock with Sylvester Stallone. She's hilarious and has some of the best lines in the movie.

Apparently, the original plan in the script was that Dennis Hopper's character (this was before the actors were cast) really did blow himself up in the first act. It then SEEMS as if he's come back and planted the bomb on the bus, but it would turn out to really be Harry who was behind it all along. I think they decided it would be better to give Jack an antagonist he could actually talk to during the bus scenes.

I saw the stunt in a featurette screened in TV at the time the film was being released. Dennis Hopper hosted. The bus they used was heavily modified so the stunt driver who was a black man lay on the floor near the back and drove out from there. The bus sustained a lot of damage as it landed. Although Keanu said to Annie earlier that there could be an incline and the bus could jump over to the other side, that definitely was not the case. The road was completely level. The chemistry between Keanu and Sandra was pretty real in this movie. Both of them have mentioned a few times how each actually wanted to ask the other out, but couldn't get the nerve to do it. Keanu didn't want to impose on her, and Sandra thought he was out of her league. They still pretty clearly have feelings for each other, but still don't act on them because they both consider that all in the past. Little silly to me...I think they'd both be worlds happier if they'd just get together. Hard to find two nicer people...and Keanu's been through enough in his life that he deserves a proper win.

Movie fact. The bus did not jump the "Gap". But, to get the scene of the bus jumping, they actually built a ramp and jumped the bus. At the time it was the longest bus jump on record. The effect of the bus going over the "gap", was done by a crane swinging the bus across it. As unrealistic as it was, it was a great stunt with a lot of technical problems to solve, and they did it, without CGI.

There's a notable goof in this movie: When you see the gap in the ramp for the first time just before the bus jump, you can see that the editing crew forgot to edit out the shadow below, indicating that the ramp is still intact.

The main problem with using that crane to hold the elevator at the beginning, is that the cable was slack when the guy blew the brakes. So instead of just maintaining potential, the crane had to fight the force of the fall, instantly compromising the crane and its attachment. Same principle as yanking a tablecloth out from under the dinnerware, but in reverse. Had they slowly put all the tension on the crane beforehand, it would've held fine when the brakes blew. Not for a long time, but plenty to get everyone out without much risk.

Dennis Hopper (the villain) is such a great over-the-top character actor. He's hilarious in Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. Also the show "Mythbusters" tested the bus jump scene in one of their episodes. Long story short, obviously it's impossible. The second the bus doesn't have the highway beneath it's tires it will start to accelerate at roughly 9.8 meters per second squared downward. Even 1 second of hang time would cause the jump to fail. Also the guy who says "OH DARN" is Cameron from Ferris Buelers Day Off.

Ok regarding the bus jumping, yes we all thought what you thought when we first watched it back in ‘94. But there’s a phrase used for movies: “the suspension of disbelief” which basically means we give filmmakers a little latitude to tell a good story and don’t micro analyse every tiny aspect. Used within reason, you’ll enjoy movies more.

Made a short film as a kid...here's the whole script: Voiceover: "Pop quiz, hot shot. There's a bomb on a potato. When the potato goes above 50 mph, the bomb is armed. What do you do?" Cut to 2 cops looking at the ground. Reverse shot of a potato on the ground. Back to cops. Cop #1: "I don't think it's going to get to 50 mph." Cop #2: "Yeah. You wanna get some lunch?" Cop #1: "Yeah." Both cops exit and The End. The movie was called _Spud_ . I'll let myself out.

Francis Ford Coppola directing Keanu, Winona Ryder, Gary Oldman and Sir Anthony Hopkins in Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) is another classic. It has some terrible British accents (Keanu and Winona) but is still an amazing film.

Fantastic reaction This is a fun and intense movie. WOW you were a baby in 94. I bet you were more cute and adorable than baby Yoda. Suddenly I feel old I graduated high school in 94. Great Job recognizing Joe Morton aka Miles Bennett Dyson T2. You definitely need to suspend disbelief for that jump scene. Unfortunately I'm normally terrible at shutting off my critical thinking during movies to allow myself to just enjoy them. The road from one side of the gap to the other was basically the same level. No way to get the air/ clearance needed. Yes they definitely could have changed somethings to make it more believable. That scene drives me crazy.

Hey Lauren! Great to see you again and you're looking stunning if i may say.🥰 OK, so i can understand your point about the bus jump but do you want to know something really crazy? They, in fact, did do the bus jump for real, HOWEVER, the missing part of the road is in fact a matt painting that's added in later. So yes, i was real, just that the gap in the road wasn't there because that would have been too dangerous and too much of a risk to do. The driver was strapped into the driver's seat with bungee cord in some kind of setup so that he didn't get hurt. The only thing he hurt doing that stunt was his lip as he bit it!, lol!😂 A fantastic movie and a great reaction also. Take care and have a wonderful day!❤

I think I read the bus "jump" was not in the original script but was added by the director because the location had an actual incomplete section, so the director thought it was a opportunity not to miss. Now you have seen Dennis Hopper as the bomber watch True Romance(1993) just for the small scene he is in to see some great acting in a good movie.

My bugbear was the 50 mph + constant speed depicted. I drove quite modern transit buses that could barely reach that and the others maxed out at that speed. Only a hand full were able to go way above that because of a highway axle ratio for longer distance work.

I once worked as a copy clerk in a 25-story building. Part of my responsibility was take the elevator from floor to floor to pick up or drop off documents. One day, I discovered there were no lights in one of the elevators. It was pitch black except for the button you pushed to go to another floor. I used that elevator for half a day before it was fixed. No one, and I mean no one else would use it. They were afraid. I thought it was kind of exciting.

@@LoveLaurenn yes, just a small single light on the panel that showed what floor you were going to. You had to push the button while the doors were still open so you could see which button to push. I was trying to get people who were waiting for a “working” elevator to join me. “Hey, it works fine. It’s just the lights are out.” Nope, nope, and nope.

Nice reactions to the fast paced Speed film, Laurenn!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽Yeah, I'm with you on the bus jump scene. It is just imposssible. Giving them enough time to put in a ramp would have been a better, and more believable idea. If you want to see a fun futuristic film with Sandra Bullock, I recommend "Demolition Man" (1993). It also stars Sylvester Stallone. I think this film actually plays better today in 2022, than when it came out.

Here is the thing about the bus jump and the sharp turn. Both stunts were done practically. Obviously they didn't actually jump a gap like that but the DID jump a bus that distance. That is why it didn't show a wide shot of the bus. The sharp turn was also done for real. They put counter weights on one side to keep it from flipping.
@jeffburnham6611

There's a making of video for this movie. They really did jump a bus to see if it was practicable, although the scene we see in the movie is mostly CGI. The bus did make the jump across the gap, but it wasn't driveable afterwards.

In Tucson, I thought I'd take a shortcut to the bus stop and 2 pit bulls started chasing me. I knew I'd only be in the town for a day, so I put my handprint in wet cement on the sidewalk.
