I saw a train up close for the first time on December 11th, 2020. Me, my dad, and my brother had walked from 4th Street all the way to the house where my mother grew up. We were going back to 4th Street after we crossed the tracks, a train was cruising down the tracks. We stood about 10 feet from it and the ground was rumbling. I've always loved trains, and steam engine locomotives have always been my favorite.

Agreed. I think the locomotives are governed to 70 mph. I don’t think the engineer had them wound out that fast, but it’s definitely impressive.
@Yarf.McBarf3 жыл бұрын
Yep. I clocked a couple of those 3-unit wellcars (204' over couplers according to Gunderson) and it looks to be doing 103 ft/s, or 70 mph, dead on.
@polyrhythmia3 жыл бұрын
Back in the early 90's, if I recall, Santa Fe would run fast freights 79 MPH before Christmas. Since locomotives have event recorders, the engineer doesn't dare exceed speed limit. I used to go to Dallas City, Il to watch trains go through town doing 70 MPH.
@MrChugwater3 жыл бұрын
@@polyrhythmia : Way back in the day AT&SF wanted to run flat out across Kansas all the way to Raton Pass in southern Colorado. The eastbound train could easily maintain speeds in access of 80 mph + as the terrain was downhill and with the prevailing winds. Westbound trains struggled to keep 65 mph - which is impressive, but not what the railroad was after as they wanted to cut the time from Chicago to LA.
@bossnaz78453 жыл бұрын
Those road units have an overspeed which is a safety device that engages the brakes if the train exceeds 73-74 mph, before the interior cab cameras were installed engineers used to disable the safety device so that they could exceed that speed, its a federal violation but some employees rolled the dice,.and didi it anyway!!!

70 mph means 112 km/h. Wow... As I know, there is no such a long and fast freight train in Europe. For example, in my country (Hungary) the longest train runs with 800 m. Great video!

Here in Czechia exists cargo trains capable of running 120 km/h (Metrans) but actually running over 100 km/h is considered as needlessly expensive.

Eric, the UP line from Kansas City to El Paso is so insanely fast through eastern New Mexico, you'd absolutely shytte yourself. Well faster than your 60mph choo choo. Probably in the 74~75 mph range. The doppler of the UP whistles is nearly shocking: very high pitched whine to a dull droan.
