This is a game from the Capel Speed Chess Challenge from back in 1988 showing a youthful pair of well known English grandmasters. It was played in central London and shown on television to a London audience only.
In 1988...
Nigel was aged 23 and number 3 in the world with a rating of 2665 (behind the two Ks)
John was aged 33 at number 13 in the world with a rating of 2620.
That leaves the commentator GM Raymond Keane, aged 40 at the time.

John Nunn is the best. I spitefully searched for his videos. Yasser Seirawen said when John Nunn speaks it is clear. Very true. I have read couple John Nunn books, and they are very good. Well put together and clear.

I'm pretty sure the move he was talking about is the open Ruy Lopez, not the Berlin

They say speed chess but what's the time control??
@lewisappleyard8758

it's 5 minutes each. the first game is them analysing a game they've just played. the second game you can see the time control in top left corner

I cant believe nobody else heard this. Nigel was asked if he analyzed Nxe4 as black in the Ruy Lopez aka Berlin Defense! And Nigel Short said he never analyzed it. Wow! Kramnik really was an innovator. Showing that a dubious looking move to super GMs is actually very good. Alot of lines in the Ruy Lopez have been assessed wrong. I also have made a novelty in the Ruy Lopez. Still testing to see if it is really good.

Sorry but 5...Nxd4 does not transpose to the Berlin defense. After 6. Re1, the knight does not retreat on d6 as in the Berlin (here it's not a good move). Check it on a chessboard ;)

@@gatakamsky9998 What are you talking about super grand master . 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Nf6 4. 0-0 Nxe4 is the berlin defense.

Here they're talking about capturing on e4 with the knight with 3...a6 4 Ba4 having earlier been played. This is not the Berlin Defence but the Open Defence - something very different ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruy_Lopez#Open_Defence:_4.Ba4_Nf6_5.0-0_Nxe4 )

Don’t understand why Black couldn’t play d5 in the position after the exchanges on c6 . Twice it was mentioned that White could take the pawn . So what ? Black takes back with a free game . Eliminates backward d pawn and extends scope of Bishop . How could that be bad ?
