I started using speed drop during an NRL hunter match and it was quick and accurate enough. 65 Creed Speed drop number with 140 eldm at 2742 fps 100 yard zero was 2.2. I slipped my turret on my ZCO 527 to 2.2... so now 2.2 mils was now my new 100 yard zero... and i could simply dial to the yardage. example 450 yards dial 4.5, 529 yards dial 5.3, 629 yards dial 6.3, speed drop was with in 0.1 mil from 300-850 yards with this bullet and velocity. Another way to use speed drop... leave turret on 100 yard zero...Dial range and subtract speed drop number. example 750 yard range minus 2.2. 7.5-2.2=5.3 mils NRL hunter match Day 1 I did not use speed drop an di had to look at my dope card nearly every target engagement and this took up time. Day 2 using speed drop I only had to reference a dope card outside the 300-850 yard ranges which wasn't to many times. I will agree this isnt for a PRS type match as those targets can be pretty small but for 10-12 inch and larger targets it worked well.

Nice video Ray. It builds on the concept of zeroing range where the trajectory of the projectile stays within the target zone throughout that distance and then using ballistic table information to extend that beyond the zero range.

Thanks Ray, nice simple video. This method absolutely works. I used it Monday on my local 770 yard range. I don't have a Kestrel so I used Strelok Pro to figure my speed drop. Takes some time but it was right on. I'm shooting a 6mm arc bolt gun by DPG. Dialed 2.4 mils and made first shot hits 400-770 yards using my reticle just as demonstrated in the video. Very quick way to engage targets. I'm going to try it out to 850 yards on the next range trip.

HOLY BUFFALO... That is mind blowing.. I have a H-591 reticle, On Monday, I will be able to try this, I will burrow a Kestrel from a buddy to get the info, and bring some tools to be able to drop my zero stop to open or back a few mils, but either way, I can't wait to experiment with this. I don't mind holding or dialing, but, this smaller bandwidth of simplicity is amazing. I really want to see what the bandwidth of the 6.5 PRC will be.. My luck, like everything else I have done that is backwards, will only be 340yds to 450yds..LOL... I want to see what, if anything at all will change, from the morning time environments, to the noon time environments if that number will change on the ( negative zero stop) from humidity, to temp, raising or lowering how far the bullet drop is. I imagine, noon time, the number will get larger, or rather, further negative on the stop. I could very well be 100% wrong on how I imagine the calculations are being computated in the Kestrel... either way.. This was cool. Thank you.

@LRRPFco52

Speed Drop calculation uses a trend line in the incremental drops of a particular trajectory profile, and limits the window to those uniform trends. If you look at your drop table, you will see consistent incremental changes between 25yd distances over a certain range, then the increments will start to increase as the projectile gets slower. The increments are smallest up-close, and largest after a certain range where they depart from the trend. The trend zone is where Speed Drop works- a window of sorts.

I shot a 77gr .223 at last match that was a perfect 2.0 w/50y zero. Didn’t want to reset my zero stop so just subtracted yardage-2 which also kept me closer to center of reticle. Great question rezdog! The higher the resolution, the shorter your “workable” range would be. For example, the 6arc was good from 232-715 with 2/10th. 1/10th resolution would make that window smaller. Completely guessing here but it would look more like 275-630. I could run the numbers but I am not with my Kestrel to give you the exact difference.

@@rezdog187 it will work on the principle of probable error for range, hence why you need your profile set up fully. The smaller the target zone the smaller the range at which this system works. Also, the flatter shooting your cartridge, the greater the engagement zone. So, a slow projectile with a looping trajectory will only ever have a short effective zone for this method. You could go to the extreme and if you know your engagement distances select a platform that shoots really flat to that range. This method would then work very well with higher resolution numbers.

So what are you doing about the wind? In my area we have practically no days that are as calm as the one pictured. 10mph being a light to mild day. And 30mph not being even considered unusual. Are you jumping to an approximal rule of thumb for wind?
@XRING
@XRING 2 жыл бұрын
Great question. That’s where those wind dots com in handy. If I take a shot at 500 and hold 2 wind dots for the hit then at 700…..it’s still two Wind dots. Almost too easy.

@@XRING I see. You were running the Horus with wind dots. I completely forgot about that. I should have caught that. Thanks for your time.

So for your gun how did you calculate the speed drop number?
@XRING
@XRING 2 жыл бұрын
Input all of the cartridge information on the Kestrel. Once the gun profile is in there you can just go to Accuracy First to calculate the speed drop number.

Question. Is this applicable to FFP scopes only?

It would be applicable to SFP scopes I imagine if you were at the manufacture spec zoom where the ranging portion of the reticle is accurate

I believe that some long distance shooters don't need all of the fancy gear to make accurate shots. Interesting video. Thanks

I’m considering the Kestrel Hornady to use with their phone app as well. And speed drop totally makes sense to me. I’m planning to do the A1 course this year and have been aware of his work for 15+ years. ETA: Response from Kestrel Ballistic: “Accuracy 1st is an applied ballistics only feature(5700, 5700Ruger, 5700Elite, 5700XElite). This is not applicable to the 4DoF Hornady (5700Hornady).” Glad I didn’t get the 5700 Hornady over Christmas now.

Length of barrel make a difference??

Absolutely
@XRING
@XRING 2 жыл бұрын
Actually no. If you built your profile correctly you would already have the speed from your barrel length already in there. This would then change your speed drop number . Make sense?

Can't wait to better understand this system. The firing solution seems so simple and accurate!!! The more I think about it, the more sense it makes sense. Fantastic video about a firing solution I've never heard of before!!
