On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. If she rocks that means you are braking the flow on the wings. Also you should be in take off flaps at this point and keeping 700kph at least . If take off flaps and proper speed you will outturn him with ease ! When you build up speed over 900kph you can deploy landing flaps ans they will not come down until you drop speed below 600kph , than they deploy automatically and you retain lift and nose authority at low speeds . If you've never read it, Arab MiG-19 & MiG-21 Units in Combat by Osprey Publications makes for some fascinating reading. The Pakistanis apparently taught the Syrians and Egyptians how to best maneuver the MiG-21 at low speed, things the Soviets did not train the foreign pilots in. In fact, Pakistan requested that the Egyptians not share the information with the Soviets for fear that they would pass it on to their enemy, India!

Can't say about Pakistan training middle East country on mig 21 but Indian mig 21 pilot were in tikrit Iraq from 1958 to 89 for fighter transport heli operation training to Iraqi even Indian fsl & fcl were instructors even Egyptian were trained during that time. P.s in 60's helwan 300 project between Egypt India till 70's

Also it is wild to consider Pakistanis providing training on a platform that they never owned / saw the inside of the cockpit of. The reverse may be true where Pakistanis may have tried to gain some insights on the Mig 21 used by India by working with the Syrians. And yes India did help Syria in some capacity as mentioned above

In bicycle racing the saying is "Train your weaknesses, race your strengths." If you're a good sprinter but a poor climber, you need to train in the hills enough to be able to stay with the pack so you have a chance to win the sprint at the end; what you don't do is try to beat the strong climbers when you know that isn't your strength. Same with fighters.

Tbf this late vietnam F-4 is at least slightly better in almost any situation compared to the Mig-21. The instantaneous turn rate and slow speed controllability of the Phantom is surprisingly good, thanks to slats/soft wings/stability augmentation. Tho training and pilot skill are much more important factors in a fight between those two planes.

I’ve noticed that some modules compliment others and even make them better. The F-4E/Mig-21Bis is definitely an example of that. I have had so much fun making customized practice missions with these 2 learning the ins and outs of their rivalry. Even the Mig-19 is fun to go up against it.

If you go back and read about American a/c losses in Vietnam, it is eye opening. The press hammered on the surface to air missiles, but in fact, USAF and USNAVY lost more a/c to triple A, air to air and then surface to air missiles. The NVA maximized their GCI efforts because the "US did not want to risk killing Russian advisors." The NVA pilots (some of who were likely Russian) became well versed in popping up in the 6 oclock, tossing some missiles and breaking away... Very rare to have a serious head to head...

Neither the 17 nor the 19 is a peer to the Phantom. Poor training killed Phantom pilots, not the airplane.

Are you referring to all American a/c losses in Vietnam? Or to American fixed-wing a/c losses only? (The majority of American a/c losses in Vietnam were helicopters - 5,600 of them).

Can someone educate me on this if I am not informed well. I have always heard the F-4 never had a gun and had to equip gun pods on its wings because the ones who designed the F-4 assumed nobody would need a gun because they thought missiles would be used before anyone entered gun range. I have heard many say it was one of the biggest weaknesses of the Phantom II.

Some models, like the F4E here, did have an internal gun in the nose. The guests on the Fighter Pilot Podcast said that they actually much preferred the Phantoms without the gun because of the superior performance that not having a gun in the nose provided.

On earlier versions like the F-4C and some other variants(F-4J and F-4S come to mind) the Phantom did not carry an internal gun and needed a centerline gun pod. With the introduction of the F-4E, an internal gun was added. The philosophy you're referring to is correct, that is what they thought back then, and its kinda the same nowadays, as the F-35 doesn't carry an internal gun either(excluding the F-35A)

No, F-4D (no gun) and E/F(gun) have the same energy tables and turn capabilities (assuming Agile Eagle) the actual performance that was more important was from the Navy perspective. The J/S had VASTLY superior radar performance. But installation of the gun would have precluded that as it required a smaller antenna be fitted.

Ya I'm leaning a lot myself in the F4 right now, mostly I'm focusing on dogfighting but ya when I get more into the "long" range stuff I can deff give some tips. if you're trying to lock someone and you're in a BVR situation use jester. I believe "Jester Context Action" long, should tell him to lock the bandit in front of you, pressing the same bind short will cycle bandits. if I recall correctly.

Beautiful, beautiful vid. Excellent choice of aircraft. These kinds of planes are much more 'real', since they don't have the stealth features, super missiles, vectored thrust and superlative engine power of the newest planes, where are poorer pilot who is less well trained and experienced at energy management can still be competitive because of all the technology supporting him. Again, excellent choice of aircraft and excellent vid.

The MIG-21 was always best used as an assassin. Get fast, sneak in, unload missiles and book it before they figure out what happened. A dogfight is definitely not where it likes to be.

Phantom drivers would never turn with a MiG, preferring to take the fight to the vertical at every opportunity which plays precisely to the Phantom’s strengths. Those massive J-79 engines generating unparalleled thrust means one could out climb and out distance the opponent at will.

I've watched many of your sessions... always wondered why you don't pull the guy into the hud, keep the tone going while he dumps flares... and just wait till he has no more flares.... THEN send a fox-2? You might have to let one opportunity go by but if you are in a good position, the second opportunity will come quick and you save a missile for later use....!

during this era, aircraft don't carry too many flares and countermeasure resistance is so low that people generally don't preflare, they wait to see the missile trail before they flare. another reason one shouldn't do that is because the longer you keep him in the HUD the more you create closure and aspect problems for yourself. GIving him a way to bring you in closer, and thereby force an overshoot.

Actually the mig-19 is a better opponent, the mig-23 might be even less maneuverable, but faster than the f-4

@@andresgarcia7757 My thoughts exactly though, the MiG-23 would be a different beast for the F-4 by virtue of the fact it will dominate the F-4 in the areas the F-4 would typically dominate other MiGs. If fought properly the F-4 would probably struggle in a Fox 2 fight because the 23 isn't going to stick around past one vertical loop and will carry enough speed to disengage and come back again. Not saying the MiG-23 would be able to easily kill an F-4 but it has the performance to deny the F-4 the kill as well. The Vertical is the MiG's greatest asset in this particular matchup

Meanwhile I've been bouncing it off the AoA indicator, cockpit shaking, accelerated stalling all over the place just because a simple Mig 19 got on my tail. Pathetic. lol
