don't be fooled kids, speed ain't shit unless it's played clean. And Batio is an extremely clean player.

It amazed me when I watched him on Troy Grady. Looking at his right hand when he shreds, he seldom employs palm muting to silence the strings. It was clear that his hand was suspended above the strings and was relying on pinpoint accuracy as to not hit any other string. I knew he was a clean player but to have seen that he can achieve that sound without palm muting left me aghast.

Yeah. We used to hate on this guy and Paul Gilbert in the 90s. So lame on our end. I have so much respect for Paul these days. As a musician and teacher. And michael makes a living doing what he does well. Teaching sick guitar techniques. And getting people pumped about playing guitar. Nothing wrong with that.

I've been an admirer of Mike since his early days of Nitro back in the 80's, and I've always tried to emulate his picking technique. Also, I to am left handed and play right handed guitar. But still, I have always reverted back to how I played in the beginning, with a similar idea of focusing on the small circle pick area. I've always found that the best overall technique was whatever in the long run feels best for you as an individual. Sometimes you have to just stop trying to play like your hero's and become your own self. But keep watching them because they keep you inspired. Many self taught guitarists feel they are doing it wrong if their not doing it like the pro's, buts what they thought too when they first picked up the guitar. Anyway, Mike is an incredible musician, guitarist and teacher. And still the king of shred. Long live the King!!!

Ted Cabana I am am a lefty that plays right, and it has its ups and downs, no pun. Your lead (feeling hand) is your off hand, but you have better ability on the frets. For us, along with picking tricks is to make sure that your brain is firing and working on both sides, it is easier to have an off night if your right hand is not cooperating, but when it is, Look Out! I have to mundane exercises to make sure I am firing with both hands.

I've always encouraged my left handed students to play right handed guitars. They always find it to their advantage. True, we do have to focus more effort on our right hands, but there are several exercises to remedy that issue. Go Lefty!!
@CapstoneTider
@CapstoneTider 8 жыл бұрын
Ted Cabana And that is a good thing because I think there are very few pure lefties, most are hybrid. I instinctively batted right handed, which was 100% choice, along with golf, drum and guitar, it felt right. But I instinctively wrote (wacked off!) left handed, which is what determines what you are imo. So most left handed people are better off playing right handed. I did a study and found that most of the lefties that play left do not write crook handed like a majority of lefties. I could go further into what this means but will save it unless someone asks
@tedcabana
@tedcabana 8 жыл бұрын
I think lefties are more ambidextrous that righty's. We tend to favor our left, but often perform tasks with our right. For example, I can not wipe my ass with my left hand.

+smr He plays a lot of alternate picking. That's great. A lot of people swear by it. But then again, Yngwie Malmsteen plays economy picking. And you can master it VERY quickly. I spent YEARS following Paul Gilberts strict alternate picking rules and only ever achieved 145bmp in quadruplets. That's not fast enough to play the leads I wanted to play. When I finally gave up and switched to economy picking, I blew through to 165bpm quads. Wow. There are quite a few Satriani runs that suddenly came VERY easy for me, which tells me he was using economy picking as well. If you want to spend some time to learn it, I suggest The Wizard of Shred . The method was easy, and once I got it under my fingers, like I said, 165bpm quads. No sweat. Randy Rhodes plays 3-note per string runs by picking 1, hammering 2, picking 3, and then repeating on the next string. That's another way to get past the dreaded "up-stroke on the next string"....Randy's method turns it into a down stroke! The moral of the story is, if you haven't gotten smooth as silk after 40 hours of practicing alternate picking, your brain just might be wired for economy picking, or perhaps Randy Rhodes picking. Those two seem to work together well, too. Alternate picking is very exclusive, though. And don't EVER go down the Frank Gambale road. He uses strict alternate picking, but planned all of his runs out to avoid the "up-stroke on the next string". Now THAT'S cheating. Good luck. (don't worry about how clean he plays---it's too sterile anyway, and he has a damper under the capo on the 1st fret----that's just a great idea for when you are in the studio, not on stage) That'll be $1200. (that's about how much I've spent over the years figuring out all of that the hard way)
@edbegley5858

thanks for the feedback. i also find economy picking to be working better for me but i get stuck at some points where alternate picking and outside picking works better. i haven't really put any serious effort to figure out what to do where.going between strings and playing some for example harmonic minor based solos are pretty painful to play with economy picking but i also can't play them via playing alternate. so what's your suggestion would be on this, trying to make them work with economy picking or trying to improve my alternate picking ?
@mojo321100
@mojo321100 8 жыл бұрын
+smr well, like I said, you are talking to a pretty committed economy picker, so I would go that route if it comes more naturally to you. Here is an exercise that jump started me: start on the low e string, 7th fret. Play 3 notes per string (Estring) 7,8,9,(Astring)7,(E)9,8,7,8,9,(A)7,8,9,(D)7,(A)9,8,7,8,9,(D)7,8,9......ect... This will super focus the economy pick moves while simplifying the left hand. I can fly this all the way up the the high e string in 2 seconds! (Just kidding). But it is really fun to play it mega fast. When it gets super easy and natural, you switch to using a 3-note per string musical scale. Let me know how it goes. I've been teaching for 20 years and I am thinking of starting a KZfaq channel.
@edbegley5858
@edbegley5858 8 жыл бұрын
yea man i already see your point getting fast with economy picking. i also can get crazy fast with up-down kinda patterns and scales but between strings is my issue. for example playing on b and low e strings:5-6-8, 5-7-8-7-5 and go up on b: 8 back to e:5-7-8 and so forth. that 8 on b destroys it for me. this is what i was trying to point out. going up and down is okay, like i can go on b:5-6-8 e:5-7-8 back on e and i can do it necrophagist fast, but when you mix stuff between you can't get them cleanly with keeping the crazy bpms. playing up and down without missing or adding another strings is okay, basically playing the scale fast but adding repeats, going back to other string and going back down kinda shapes i cannot get to go with my economy picking. did you solve it by practicing or you avoid doing such ? that was my main problem.
@mojo321100
@mojo321100 8 жыл бұрын
+smr you get past it by designing a cyclic pattern that isolates the problem spot. Like , your problem sound s like you would benefit from: (B) 5,6,8,(e)5,(b)8,6,5,6,8,(e)5,7,8,7,5,(b)8,(e)7,5,(b)8,6,(e)5,(b)8,6,5, repeat. This cycle does not fit quads or triplets. It is a mess. But it is easy mixing for economy picking. I can't stead how important it is to get comfy with the picking without worrying about musicality, other than staying even tempo. That's called isolated technical practice.

Dude, at 62 years old and I’m from Chicago I’ve never heard of Michael Angelo Batio! And I grew up listening to hard rock and metal. How is this so? WTF? I have to admit that I got stuck in my rut listening to Blackmore and Iommi, for 50 years. Not a bad rut, but a rut. Now I am in a band playing lead guitar and I’m searching for lessons on guitar technique and I discover this guy on Troy Grady’s channel. I am upset that I have been living a the same universe with MAB and never new about him. I could have enjoyed his music all these years and learned these techniques already. Who knows where I would be as a guitar player.

i dont get it what is it about most of the people that claim that mab or any other guitarist who likes to play fast most of the time dont play with feeling or soul, playing a sequence of notes slow or making funny faces while u play does not mean u play with emotion some people just feel the music without showing it on their face or with their body language but that does not mean they dont feel what they play. as for me i dont care about the speed i like fast playing as well as slow and if u cant feel the fast playing then that means that u dont got the ear to catch whats going on its simple as this not trying to hate on someone just making my point thank you

totally right, in my first year I also in some riffs didn't do alternate picking, but some mash up where I would go from one string to the one beneath by two down-strokes... it didn't take much pratice, maybe 14 hours or so, but concentrating on correct alternate picking makes it much easier - because your picking stops being random and chaotic if you practice the same thing over and over again.

Very profoundly simple wisdom, I like him. Another thing to watch is your breathing. I find that when I cock up, i disturb my breathing rhythm and I drift in attention. One way I have found is to simplify the riff and try to play it without it altering my breathing, if it does then its too complicated and I step down. If you try this you make an almost instant improvement and you can feel it.

After watching a few dozen interviews and lessons with Mr. Batio, I've come to the conclusion that he seems like a very likable, hard working, down to Earth, intelligent and professional guy. He's obviously invested a lot of time and energy into developing a skill set that few people possess. But, even appreciating all of that, I fucking hate his style of playing. I just cannot get into it. And I've really, really tried to give him a chance. Just ain't for me.

Just play around with the 1st exercise Michael provided. It cures the tendency to not alternate pick which mostly occurs when people throw in redundant down-strokes. Noobs tend to do this because to them it feels natural compared to using the appropriate up-stroke. In that exercise the first three notes are on the D string (d,u,d) with the next note on the adjacent G string. In order to continue the alternate picking pattern the 4th note on the string must be struck with an up-stroke (d,u,d,U).

Wow one of the very few musicians that are great without a huge giant crappy ego , that's refreshing , not only is he extremely good , he's also a nice guy and great teacher and funny too , that's a real rarity !!! I ordered metal method lessons years ago and learned alot I didn't know already and i already knew alot , metal method lessons are awesome and well worth buying , I highly suggest buying them for anyone that wants too play or already plays , very helpful lessons !!! Doug marks is very good too I bought his lessons as well very helpful too as well !!!

After listening to his advice I keep getting pulled over for speeding, but on the bright side, I can play guitar really fast!

I don't know how he ever had that problem of stroking twice in the same direction, I mean that's really far from being my problem; the biggest issue is changing string while picking fast, and I think that's the case for everyone
@infinitesimotel
@infinitesimotel 8 жыл бұрын
+InfinityDz Yes, string changing is down to L/R hand syncing, but I notice some slight anxiety in pick moves that I find hard and I tense and then it stumbles my timing because I am not relaxed enough to do the riff in one fluid motion without the tension causing the movement to be broken up. The way I do it is to slow down and play with the least possible effort to reduce the micro adjustments and tensions as much as possible until you can literally play from any point without distraction. You could also use EFT technique to take away the pshycological hooks out which I have found most effective. Another technique I have found really insane is to play a riff through the changes and not let it interrupt your breathing, so you have to focus on playing and on not disturbing your breathing but not to force it. It is a bit of a headfuck at first but you notice the stuff you can play is stuff that doesnt throw your concentration through distracting your breathing too much. Begin with a basic riff and then increase the complexity and the learning happens faster. The point at which it does interrupt is the current limit of your ability. Just find it and push it out slowly.
