Speed Metal VS Thrash Metal

As some of you might know, I love creating music and making these types of riff battle videos. ALL the RIFFS and SOLOS in this video and my other riff battles were created by me, based on some of my favorite bands of each genre. If you find some of these riffs similar to songs from other bands, it might have been totally on purpose. This is my own idea of how each genre sounds like with a little touch of my own playing and composing style.
Don't forget to comment which one hits stronger in your opinion. I just love them both, but thrash will always have a special place for me.

Speed metal: Usually in the key of A or higher, more melodical in general Thrash metal: Usually in the key of E, more focus on the groove

I’d say speed metal is more melodic, more uplifting And thrash metal is, ironically, more based on speed.

Speed metal is just faster Heavy Metal, while thrash is either one with hardcore punk and progressive influences. I love how you hinted at the heavy metal base of speed metal by shifting the tempos

@@mr.echo24 yes indeed they sound technical because he chose to present it like that. But thrash in the beginning of the genre, had nothing to do with high advanced playing. On the contrary, some bands were primitive as fuck. Example given, Sodom, Bathory, Hellhammer. I repeat that i am talking about the beginning of the genre and not about how it evolved...

I think you should do uplifting/dark riffs next. Like NWOBHM/Power Metal for the uplifting ones, and Black/Death for the dark ones.

only thing you missed on thrash metal is the punk style drumbeat from 4:4 time to halftime which usually triggers mosh pits. These are heard all throughout bands like Anthrax, Suicidal Tendencies, Overkill, Sepultura and European bands like Kreator

Sorry man. I don't have tabs. I only record the riffs I make. Maybe I'll make them in the future, but it's not on my plans at the moment.

It's sad but I'd appreciate if you made tabs for your riffs and publish them in the future because I want to learn riffs with faster rythms too and yours are banging as hell (i guess probably the huge influence of Chuck and many trash, power metal bands too)! @@HeavyRaiden Thanks ! To be fair, it doesn't help me much either but I appreciate the effort to try and educate my sorry ass ! It is just hard for me to distinguish from "hey! that's Anthrax / Kreator / CoB / [insert a band] style" to "that's Black / Death / Death mélo / [insert one of the gazillions metal subgenre] " style. I can easily recognize a band by the way they play, but I couldn't categorize it in any style of metal if my life depended on it. It doesn't bother me much though, as it doesn't spoil any of the pleasure I get from listening (and I still can feel the easter eggs in Leonard's riff).

Well that's not surprising as the "speed metal" riffs here could barely qualify as speed metal. Speed metal - think Exciter first and foremost always. Abbattoir first album and many more. As far as the riff guitar goes, in speed metal the right hand is picking mainly continuously fast and the left hand is just cruising around at a moderate pace playing something fairly melodic. In thrash the right hand is picking fast with starts, stops, jumps and the left hand is well thrashing around playing all kinds of notes that are rhythmic but not particularly melodic. It's easy to tell which is which when you are actually playing it on a guitar or watching someone play it on a guitar. All you need to play speed metal ( riffs not leads) is a fast right hand, but with thrash metal riffs you need both hands to be fast and your brain needs to be geared to rapid starts stops and jumps. Lots of songs are a mix of the two. Power metal is like both but fancier sounding and it sounds real impressive for a song or two, but it gets boring after a short while because it's all the same thing over and over.

Both such influencal genres in metal. For thrash there are strong genres such as death metal and black metal that were influenced by thrash. But for speed metal there are other great genres that take inspiration from speed metal, like power metal, and a decent amount of Gothic metal. It can be so cool when these genres merge, and you definitely hear how they came from the same place yet they're so different!

What type of jackson are you using?, and also alot of the speed metal riffs sound like death riffs which is sick. In my opinion speed and thrash arw roughly the same to some degree. Slayers show no mercy sounded more like speed metal record while Metallica sounded like punk with speed metal on kill em all which is the first thrash record.

Well, I guess we can call Speed Metal as Melodic Thrash Metal 'cause Speed really sound like a more melodic form of Thrash with lesser influence of Hardcore Punk.
