This week I got a very cool package in the mail from The Army Painter. The new Speed Paints 2.0 are out and in all honesty, they are refreshing. I have painted with all sorts of Contrast like paints, and I've always come away with the same conclusion, they are fine, but it's not changing the way I look at painting. For SOME REASON, this time was different, and painting with these paints felt like a new experience. This isn't a sponsored video, but I felt it was important to share my results and findings after having used them.

I used to paint entire armies for a friend of mine, about 20k points worth of Tyranids, Necrons, Tau, Chaos Marines and Daemons, including specialty models and titans from forgeworld over the course of a decade. He tried to paint the Tau himself, before the advent of contrast paints or even shade washes - no nuln oil, no liquid talent was released yet. Ever since getting children, I didn’t even have time to paint my own stuff, so I stopped painting for him as well. Contrast paints changed this, more or less overnight. He was able to paint an entire new Chaos Daemons army by himself, including large models like Belakor and Kabanda, as well as a full Adeptus Titanicus force. Contrast paints are such a great starting point for people who are shying away from painting their minis! Your models look great, thank you for sharing!

You're absolutely right in the "free-flowing" part of the process about painting with Speedpaints. I use the older range, and the much discussed reactivation problem is to me a useful tool in my arsenal, allowing blends, gradients and effects otherwise difficult or just bothersome to obtain with classic paints and techiniques. And very often I just go with the flow about mix ratios and such, just enjoying the moment.

I see the fear of inadequacy when people compare themselves to others (especially on social sharing platforms) and are fearful to take the first step on the journey to painting a mini. Getting brushes loaded with paint and onto a model is rewarding, as is finishing them regardless of skill level. Regardless of how much you observe others, it’s never as rewarding as taking those first steps, followed by the next one and the next - a journey which you never will finish as we are constantly learning and trying new techniques.

Several KZfaq channels have made similar videos in the last couple of months- I think it's important to remember that, for the vast majority of us, this is a HOBBY- not a profession. It's something we do because we enjoy it. I have friends that golf. A few are really good. Most are fair. Several SUCK. Yet, they all enjoy golfing. Like what you do. It's YOUR hobby. Don't let anybody talk down YOUR creativity and expression. If others are critical and unappreciative of your work, they don't deserve to experience it.

Recently ive gotten into using the contrast/speedpaint ranges to do wet brush blending and it is the most satisfying and joyous painting experience ive ever had. Start with whatever paint color is lighter, lay that on, and then dip the very tip of yoyr brush (im using a size 4 brush, so plenty of belly) into the darker color to begin the blend. Its like magic for transitions, and juat feels insanely good to do

Too true about how seeing better paintjobs can discourage someone. I lost motivation to paint for a few months after I realized how much I still have left to learn, but I bought some speedpaints, learned some simple techniques like drybrushing and I'm painting some models that in my opinion look amazing.

I think that the main barrier or issue that people find hard to overcome is not the quality of work on insta/FB, but the cost of these models. Let's face it, if an army didnt cost the same as a used car then you probably wouldnt have the same compunctions about a sloppy paint job

I kind of dig the speed paint minis. I painted up 4 bunnies from D&D for another game as a prototype and knocked the little buggers out in one night with the 1.0 Speed paints. It was a quick paint. 2.0 I hear cure faster but speed paints have their place. You won't win awards but damn for 4 bunnies that I'll use for a offshoot game it was great!

Im currently repainting my 2nd edition 40k ork army boxed set with army painter speedpaint, I'm absolutely loving it, for the early bright style of painting you really can do one coat over a light zenathal primer then use the reactivation feature and a q tip to do super fast and easy highlights. . Knocked out 10 boys in less than an hour and I'm really happy with how they look.

I got into the hobby because I liked the painting. I love good contrast type paints. I use cans and brushes. I can add more details from the speedpaint finish. With a few edge highlights and washes and it's pretty amazing work. But the best part. The speedpaint gets you to something to be proud of that you can add to and build on.

Agree 100%. I was coming to this same realization during covid. I started doing a lot of underpainting with inks, washes and Contrast paints and realized that the payoff comes when a model is finished and ready to play, not from the quality. And that getting 80+% of the result in only 20% of the time is waaaaaay better than taking a mini to 95+% but taking far longer to get there, longer to finish, longer to play and less of a payoff, but with more burnout over a project. To the point that looking at perfectly painted minis now makes me think "wasted time" more than "that looks awesome" Then I tried the 1.0 Speedpaints and this cemented for me. I got such better results, faster than I did with inks, washes and Contrast that I bought the AP 1.0 Mega-set, sold all but 3 of my Contrast paints and started using SP as my primary paints. Am getting the new Complete set and will give my current set to a friend. I've got a couple games where I went for pure speed and averages under 20 minutes per mini (not much in the way of touch ups or additional highlights), and one game I finished in a single sitting. Perfectly good tabletop quality and knocking out a game like that is so very rewarding and satisfying it changed the way I approach it all now

looking at paint jobs online can be very detrimental to your moral as a model painter. As someone who also paints things for my youtube channel I often find myself struggling to get stuff done because I've seen other people's amazing paint jobs and then looked back at my own work and gone "but i am just painting this for play, it doesn't have to looo....... ah damn it needs to look better" and it is that line of thinking that caused me to loose ages painting four models in the time it would normally take me to paint squads because i wanted to push the paintjob further than i normally would for a video I am working on and regretting to a degree

I loved watching this video, it pushed me over the line to ordering some army painter speed paints to try them out. I often look at my painting station and don’t actually paint because I feel like it takes such a long time, and I don’t get the results I see online. But this seems really encouraging to just finish some models and feel accomplished. I had one (probably basic..) question. When you were talking through the highlighting (after the initial basecoat), I got a little bit confused. Do you highlight using a mix of speed paint and other non speed paints? Or do you just look for a non - speed paint that has a similar colour to the base speed paint and add white to that to create your highlights? I hope that makes sense! Thank you for making this video :)

After years of not painting and a few false starts I recently the exact same realisation. I am still a slow painter but by using speedpaints as a starting point I have now painted 55 zombies from Zombicide Rue Morgue in the past several weeks. 25 of those have just been in the past few days. They look good enough for a tabletop game, they look like a horde and I have enjoyed far more than any other time I painted. I will try and up my level for characters and specials but just making progress is massively uplifting and satisfying. I can even paint at distance without magnifying aids until I need to do the eyes 😂.

The math works out pretty well compared to other types of advertising. As long as they sell 2-3 sets, that they wouldn't have sold otherwise, for every on they give away they break even. They break even even faster if people buy singles or buy direct.
