Is there any reason to use a custodial wallet instead of a wallet with an eCash protocol?

As with any custodian both options require trust. With Speed you're putting trust in a publicly identifiable company, but there are privacy tradeoffs. With Cashu you get great privacy but it is still early and there are no long standing mints with built up reputations yet. In both instances I would only use day to day spending cash, not long term savings.

Education is key. Start someone new with play money on a custodial lightning wallet, then they can move to non custodial or try a fedi, then try on chain, then hardware wallet, .... etc
