We were grateful you warned us about the speed cameras. The nice thing was the cameras had signs warning of the camera. The sneakiest camera was inside a very long one-lane tunnel on the Trollaskagi Peninsula. The tunnel posted speed was 70 km, but it's long and dark and you have to focus on the signs warning of oncoming cars to pull over. Stressful. It was the unsigned speed bumps that were in all towns that we had to really watch for! Thanks!

A local told me while I was in Iceland, that if you see a broken down car on the side of the road that sometimes looks real beat up - that it is actually has a speed camera. Not sure if this is true - but needless to say, I was always real careful about driving the speed limit.

90 kph always seemed fine, because I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, couldn't make the conversion in my head to mph, and always imagined that I was driving much faster than I really was. I mean, 90!!!! Wahoo! Plus, the nice Polish kids who rented me the car gave me the lecture about speeding tickets. Much appreciated. As an observation, the local farmers didn't seem to think much of the 90kph limit.

I "may" have got a ticket from a speed camera on the south ring road trying to get to Ingolfsskali! One nice thing is the police officer deducted 25% of the fine because I called to pay the fine within a certain time (30 days I think).

We put thousands of miles on our rental,and with the way my husband drives,I was not only surprised but relieved to not get a single ticket. It can be easy though with all those wide open spaces and open roads. Can't wait to return.

Depends on wind direction. They let people know in the morning if it is open to visitors. We showed up at p2 parking at 8am, and they did not give the ok until 9 am.

Just got back home to Rhode Island after six days. Can confirm that doing 90kph will get you run into a ditch! Hard to tell if it's native Icelanders or tourists but it felt at times as if we were in a NASCAR race.

Great informative, keep it up! Often when in a foreign capital, I will splurge on a luxury 1st class hotel that has a driver to take me to the airport or train station. True I tip the driver bigly; but it takes the headache out of missing a flight or train. What are the options for the best hotels in Iceland's capital?

Why would you want to speed when everywhere you are driving is so beautiful? The best advice we followed was to get the car insurance - while we have great credit cards that have rental car insurance protection, 30 minutes after picking up our car we had a windshield crack! It just made it easier being able to drop it off, no questions, no paperwork.

I remember last year driving near the eruption site and the speed posted was about 20km which felt like it should have been at least 60. I had a line of cars behind me but there's no way I wanted a ticket :D

Hello ,I love your videos and I would like to ask you some questions please. I am currently planning to come to Iceland for a month and a half from Central Europe and I'm in need of some info about fuel sold there. Can you do a video explaining different types of fuel sold in iceland ? Like which one is better for which vehicle ,whats the difference between them,which is higher in additives,higher quality etc. ? Seeing tons of videos ,there are shown multiple types of diesel and gasoline/benzin types that are available at the gas stations and it confuses me . At my country there are usually only two types of gas and three types of diesel ,but on Iceland it looks like there are much more types. I have a large tanks on my vehicle and I like to get the best fuel that I can,so that's why i'm asking. I've been researching on many websites,social media groups etc.but no one seems to explain this topic. Would it be possible to make a video about this ? Thank you very much in advance. Erik from Slovakia.

I read your advice about speeding before we went and boy, were you wrong. I was getting passed left and right. Granted, we went in June so it may have been all tourists but most people on the ring road were going 100 or more.

Is there any buffer zone between the posted speed limit and the beginning of ticketing? Will they ticket you for exceeding the speed limit by only 5 or 10 km/hr?
@wilsong72
@wilsong72 10 ай бұрын
I know this is a subjective question but is there traditionally a buffer in Kilometers over the speed limit? For example, if it's a 90 Kilometer zone and you're driving say 95 kilometers when the camera catches you. Would you typically expect to receive a violation?

You said in Reykjavik the speed limit is 30 KMPH. It would be easy to get a speeding ticket there, just riding a bicycle.

That's only on streets close to residential areas, schools etc. The speed limit range in town is 30-60 KMPH.

I used Waze when driving in Iceland in July. It warned me about speed cameras as I approached them. I also appreciated the excellent icelandic pronunciation of the road names. Another thing I noticed was that many small towns will have radar warning signs that will display your speed you when you have not slowed down to the reduced speed limit, and show a "happy face' when you do. These are not cameras, just warnings.

Another thing you can do with Waze, is set it so it shows you the current speed limit and will make a sound when you go over. It did a better job of knowing the transitions that I could keep track, while watching the scenery.

Fyi: The 4kph speed deduction in this case is due to the fact that speed cameras are not properly accredited (formally calibrated with reference to an accredited measurement reference), and the authorities HAVE to deduct - in your favor - the worst possible calibration error. In the example, a measured 111kph (calibration error almost certainly well within +/-1%), being reduced by 4kph (3.6%) virtually guarantees that you are not being treated unfairly.

The last time I heard (which was a while ago), they give people a little wiggle room... if the limit is 90, they don't really start fining until 95. Not sure about lower speed limits.

One of the reasons I thought biking in Iceland should be okay is the low speed limit, but looking at the video the roads seem very narrow with no shoulder. Are the drivers willing to share and not crowd?

What if it wasn't you driving? Are you still responsible for the fines there? We have speed cameras here in AZ. If it wasn't you driving, they request that you identify who the driver was, but you're not required to. If you don't identify the driver, they have to dismiss it. You do however have to blow up your driver's license so they can compare it to the picture on the photo radar.

Iceland is nothing. If you travel to Australia, be warned! Seat belt detection cameras, mobile phone detection cameras, speed detection cameras, red light detection cameras, bus lane detection cameras. NSW Police and several other states also use number plate recognition detection cameras. School zone detection cameras. Tourists have been known to go home broken❤ed from a trip to OZ! Oh sorry, I digress, this vid is about Iceland!
