tubejim101: Thanks, dude. Your info at the beginning of the video about watching to the end was very helpful. Additionally, what you shared at 3:47 about not having to remove the cable from the transmission (which I was just about to crawl under my truck to do) saved me some misery. Finally, at 5:40 you solved a mystery on why a speedometer might be jumping after reinstallment. Good concise video. Good job!

I have a 1994 toyota truck and the Speedometer went intermittent and just quit. My service manual says that between 93 and 94 some trucks went from a speedo Cable to a "speed Sensor"? I understand if you have to replace the dash board itself, it is alot of money. I hope my truck has a cable and I will try and change it. I am a one owner since new truck owner and I guess if the speedo lasted 30 years, I cannot complain. Great truck, I paid 9400$ in 1993 about this time of year. Funny , I have people coming up to me wanting to buy my truck because it is a Toyota and it looks totally stock with little wear and tear.

I do not. I think their are people who have upgraded from cable to electrical. Think you would need to put a new dash in.

Question ,On the end piece of the speedometer cable that locks on one way on side of transmission. I removed the cable nut.When I slide cable out from transmission the little lock pin on end was separate from end cable.It slips over the end cable but just spins.Does that need to be crimped back?I think it may be the reason my speedometer is not working.Could not get a good enough look on your video,Thanks P.s Really like how clean your frame underneath etc..is.Harder to find on Older Toyota's.
@tubejim101
@tubejim101 6 жыл бұрын
Don't know if you can just crimp it back on. If it was me, I would just buy a new cable. I am getting ready to pull my cable back out, and see what kind of lube they used on it. Not sure if it should be graphite, or some kind of grease. In Oregon, it rains for about 8 months. So, all that fresh water washing, keeps the rust away. In my area, we don't use salt, so the bottoms of the cars are clean.

When you pull it out maybe check end.It didn't break cause its flush.Wondering if it stripped.Yeah,miss the West when it comes to vehicles.Don't realize how nice a clean vehicle is until you get around the salt.Especially the older Toyota's.

I just re-lubed the speedo cable on my '89 Toyota pickup. The cable had never been out before, and when I removed it, it had grease on it, which was what they put on it in the factory. I had been told graphite was best, but since I couldn't clean the old grease out of the inside of the housing, I just cleaned the cable and re-lubed it with white lithium grease. Test drove it and it works.

You think that's difficult..you should try this 2nd gen 4runner v6. Cable connector will not release from dash cluster. I released push down clip and it slide s right off. But damn thing is still attached somehow. (I'm only on hour 9 of truck work) ... edit: twisting and pulling hard and it's starting to budge! Probably busted up dash cluster but it's coming off.

Hey there Jim, Ive got a 92 pickup with an automatic transmission. Ive got an issue where my speedometer/odometer dont move at all but, all other dash gauges (fuel and engine temp) work just fine. I assume its speed sensor related however I dont seem to have that same cable connecting to the transmission. I suppose my question is if you may have any suggestions before I take it over to a mechanic. Thanks for your time.

Hi any feedback you have would be appreciated. My speedometer/ odometer stopped working so I started trouble shooting. I disconnected my speedometer cable at at the transmission and chucked it up in my drill to see if my my speedometer needle/ odometer would turn and both do in fact turn freely so the issue is not the cable or the gauges. So I'm assuming the part I need to replace is the female side at the transmission? Do you know what that part is called? I have an 87 pickup 2wd manual. Thanks

I just removed and lubed the speedo cable on my 1989 Toyota Hilux pickup. After unscrewing the retainer on the right side of the transmission (22mm spanner), I could not initially pull the cable out of the housing. I gripped the end with pliers, being careful not to squeeze too tight and damage it, and after a couple of moderate tugs it pulled free and came out easily. I had been told dry graphite was the best lube, but the cable still had its factory lube on it, which was grease. So I cleaned it in lacquer thinner, scrubbed it with an old toothbrush, wiped it dry, and re-lubed it with white lithium grease. I laid out a clean sheet of plastic I happened to have in the garage on the floor under the truck to keep from getting grit on the cable, inserted the cable end into the housing, then proceeded to apply the grease from the tube on about six inches of the cable at a time, followed by pushing the greased section into the housing. When inserting the cable end back into the socket in the transmission, be sure to get the small tab sticking out of the side of the cable end to fit into the small slot in the socket.

My speedometer needle jumps around when I’m driving my car. For example it I was driving 25mph, the needle would jump from the speed I was doing to higher or a lower number. The needle also did this whenever I would go and start my car. Do you think it’s loose somewhere?
