Speedometer Erratic/Twitching Won't Shift - Code C0055 Speed Sensor SOLVED Chevy/GMC 1999 - 2006

I'll show you how to replace Vehicle Speed Sensor in 1999 - 2006 Chevy Truck & SUV. How to fix code C0055 - Rear Vehicle Speed Sensor on 1999 - 2006 Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra. The Erratic/Twitching speedometer and not wanting to shift can be an easy fix. I'll explain how I fixed mine and hopefully help you fix yours cheap and easy.

Sir. I want to thank you for making this video! Straight to the point! I have a 1997 Silverado with an automatic transmission and it won’t shift out of first gear until it gets warmed up. Drive, drive 2 and reverse are strong, but drive 3 it just revs up. ABS light is on and speedometer doesn’t move until it gets warmed up and when it starts shifting like it’s supposed to the ABS light goes off and the speedometer starts working. I’m thinking speed sensor or bad wiring. I’m going to crawl under there and check her out! Thank you again sir!

Yes sirrr!!!! I bought me a new speed sensor, changed it out and she now shifts better than ever!!!! $12 fix. 🙂 Again, I won’t to thank you sir for your video!!!! I’m no rookie at working on vehicles, but I watch and use a lot videos to give me better direction. Saves a lot of time in my opinion. Have s great day my friend!!

I didn’t check it. I just changed out the speed sensor. It was right on top of the transfer case so I didn’t go into the transmission pan. I recently had a new flywheel put on and there was not any metal or shivers in the pan.

@@FreeAutoMechanic It Helped... i had just changed a tranny months ago... there was some wires Smashed that run to speed sensors / transfer case ?? fixed that and shifting back to normal... thanks didnt go out an by another rebuilt Tranny for 500.

Hello thanks for your video it was so helpful for all the people out there my problem was different, my speedometer didnt move at all and it wont past 1 gear, so i wasnt that sensor but it was the other one located more like back on the transfers tail closer to the drive shaft, it wasn't the sensor but one of the cables of the harness was cut it was green and black wires i think, my truck is a z71 4x4 RCSB 99 5.3 4L60 in case anyone else have this same problem it can also be that other sensor

Thanks for the very good explanation. I replaced the sensor and it still won't shift out of low gear. I'm thinking it's a pinch or frayed wire. It's had a bad oxygen sensor code for a while. I replaced the oxygen sensor but I still can't find the problem. I'm thinking it's there where the wire are laying at the body line but I don't think I can get to it to fix it without pulling the transmission. Got any suggestions?

Start at the back where the VSS sensor wiring harness connects and work your way forward. When it comes to tracing wiring issues it can sometimes require a lot of patience. Hang in there.

Maybe shift solenoids. If it won't shift, but I think if it was the solenoids, you would be able to go to 2nd gear, just not the higher gears or vice versa, I don't think it'll throw a code that directly indicates this but I could be wrong there.

Okay so I have this same issue.. I’ve watched both of your videos. I have a 05 Silverado z71 5.3. I was driving and service brake system popped up and Speedo started going crazy & losing gears like how yours did.. but it would randomly go away & randomly come back. It only does it whenever service brake system pops up, other than that it runs smooth. What could be the issue you think? I’m guessing maybe the wheel speed sensor on my passenger side front tire?

i got a 02 chevy 1500 4x4, did you only replace the one sensor or did you replace all 3 on the transfer case?

@@FreeAutoMechanic I didn’t get around to watching the video but my issue happened to be the wiring, so I ran new tires and a loom from the computer back to by VSS and that fixed my problem?

Mine shifts fine but i have no speedometer movement at all. RPM gauge and all others work . Could it be a bad instrument cluster?

I have the same issue I replaced the speed sensor and didn’t work for me. I think my wire harness may be bad can you explain more on how you fixed it? Mine is a 2004 GMC Yukon 5.3 2wd

So far All I have done was disconnected the harness connections and wiggle the harness and it has been working flawlessly since. Am waiting for warmer weather before digging to deeper into where the exact location of the harness failure is. Hope it works for you as well. Thanks for watching!

i got a 99 silverado 2500 4x4 this summer when it was hot my tranny shifted perfect now itscold it will shift the first time but takes its time to shift the second time until the tranny gets warmer then it shifts perfect there in no engine light on so no codes

You can see if the sensor is working by passing a magnet back and forth of the tip while watching the reststance, the changing magnetic field will change the value of the resistance as it switches

I have a 95 K2500 454 4wd that I thought might be the speed sensor but I just replaced it and the speedometer runs very smooth, but it will not shift out of first. Not sure where to go next. Does anyone have any ideas?

My problem is that my fuel gauge on the cluster is always twitching or shows that I have no gas

Most common cause is bad ground to pump module(the fuel gauge sending unit is a part of that). Generally replacing the fuel pump module will cure the issue. In rare cases the gauged may need replaced. Thanks for watching!

I have a 99 Yukon that won’t shift to second gear it’ll shift to third gear after 20 miles an hour, but I have to let off the fuel then it will shift into third. It will not go in the second gear, no matter what you do in the ideas.

My speedometer jumps up and down while driving now and it shifts very badly sometimes it feels like there's nothing like I'm in neutral then the next I'm stuck in overdrive or 1st gear. And it just happened all of a sudden. Could this be my problem you think?

My 93 s-10 auto 460L did the same thing. Also at the time my abs brake light would come on??? Unhooked battery and cleaned odometer speed sensor with brake cleaner and electronic cleaner. Hooked everything back up, problem solved.

@@FreeAutoMechanic but there is no codes at all nor check engine light. People keep saying it's my clutch pack but also the transmission control module can cause no shift for 3rr and 4th gear too.
