they're totally different. first being that synthwave is way older than vaporwave and that vaporwave samples from city pop and funk (aka really chill, happy songs) which is a total contrast to the hyper junkie type rhythm and beat of synthwave. it's understandable why people get them confused since their aesthetics both stem from the 80s and 90s and the heavy use of synths. it's a lot like saying the sun is the same thing as the moon. w/o context it makes sense but once you learn the truth you realize they're quite different.
