Wesley Webb West (January 25, 1924 - November 15, 2003), better known as Speedy West, was an American pedal steel guitarist and record producer. He frequently played with Jimmy Bryant, both in their own duo and as part of the regular Capitol Records backing band for Tennessee Ernie Ford and many others!
My grandfather, Eddie Kirk, played rhythm guitar & sang with Ernie Ford, as well as Merle Travis, in their bands, along with speedy west! When we found out that Speedy West was still alive outside of Tulsa, Oklahoma, my family and i went to see him on a day trip & we reminisced about the country western songs of the 40s & 50s that speedy & our grandpa had played!
Speedy west, suffered a stroke in his later years, leaving him partially paralyzed on his right side. However, in this video, he literally dusted off one of his old steel guitars, tuned it by ear, & played the melody you hear in this video. We're pretty sure he hadn't done this in Years, & that this was probably his last performance. RIP.

I know Speedy and Jimmy did legendary playing together, but this one with Wesley Tuttle shows what I always thought was the essence of Western Swing steel playing: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gphimNCB0rjMj40.html

One of the greatest musicians of all time, in any style of music. I've been a fan of Speedy and Jimmy Bryant all my life and their records still amaze me to this very day. There are very, very few musicians who have ever reached the level of virtuosity and originality those two guys did.

Nice touch with the rifle on the wall. This is just gorgeous. I'm a 67 year old male drummer that openly listens to EVERYTHING--from Gregorian chants to power pop to country to death metal...and more. Pedal steel is one of the FINEST sounding instruments on Earth, and Speedy was a singularity.

My old friend Jackie Fidler a steel guitar player himself told me about Wesley (Speedy) back during the 60's where their two bands were playing at a large special event. For some unknown reason they sat in for each other! Just being buddys and especially when both guitars were tuned to E9!!! Jackie said it was "just fun!"

This man was truly the master of this instrument and pushed the boundaries of what could be done on it to the limit. Listen to him on "Flippin the Lid". Soeedy was unstoppable! Even here in his golden years the feeling put into this short piece of Duke Ellingtons "Mood Indigo" is frieghted with such emotion. Rest in Peace Mr. West and God bless you.

Summer of 2001, just 2 years before he sadly passed away. But, we were extremely fortunate enough to see him, & reminisce about Tennessee Ernie Ford, Merle Travis, my grandfather Eddie Kirk, & Jimmy Bryant! I got in contact with Ernie Ford's estate, & told them my grandfather Eddie was in his band (along with Speedy) & they mentioned that South Park, had asked them for permission to use 16 Tons! So, now, a whole new generation of people have heard Ford & Speedy's music! (nearly 3 Million views for this video, & the estate, gave permission to use the song, but didn't know it would be about Amazon!) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r7VpibWl17qup5c.html
