Speedy West plays "On The Alamo" live on TV 1956!

Here Speedy West plays live on L.W.'s show, playing his version of "On The Alamo." This is a super-rare clip, there isn't much vintage Speedy West footage out there, to the best of my knowledge this hasn't ever seen the light of day. Here Speedy plays his Fender steel guitar with hand-tooled leather front "apron" on it. R.I.P. Speedy West!

This doesn't show Speedy's real signature style of slapping that steel.... I just love that and have heard it all my life. My folks knew Speedy personally and we all love him!

Very interesting, my parents were married in a double ceremony with Speed and his 1st Wife, nice man and so talented.

I met Speedy atthe International Steel Gutiar conventional in St.Louis. My Dad and Dewitt Scott or Scotty were frineds all their life and my Dad was sick and wanted to go see Scotty. I took him and what a pleasure it was at the l. Iuncheon I was sitting beside Speedy West and Buddy Emmons. KInda like being beside Steel Royality.LOL Ihad a friend meet us there and he tried to joke about Speedy wearing black leather gloves on Labor day weekend. I knew Speedy had trouble with his hands being cold

I didnt know Speedy West was from Springfield, Mo. I live about 20 miles from Springfield. It's also the hometown of Steel Guitarist Dave Musgrave of The Cherokee Cowboys. Dave was a friend of mines grandfather.

He's my great uncle. My mom's maiden name is West. Him and the rest of his generation of the family sold all the land we owned in Missouri, to move to California to "become rich". Didn't work, in case you were wondering. But he was a great player.

My dad knew both Speedy and Speedy Jr. My dad was a musician for 70+ years. He may have played music with them. I think Jr played on a song or two on one of my dad's cds. Dad played music with many greats. We also live in SW Missouri.

This was the first year that Speedy switched from Bigsby to Fender steel. The Fender is so mellow.... I just don't care for it. Speedy never sounded the same after ditching that wonderful sounding old Bigsby. But then Jimmy Bryant quit playing Telecasters too, and he certainly wasn't the same either.
