Looks pretty neat. Would love to see the Smart capabilities open sourced as a protocol so other manufacturers could also implement it for their products. Being locked in to Spektrum only seems like a problem.

Great video. I found out (the frustrating way) that some Axial rtr’s say the product is Spektrum smart ready. But what it doesn’t mention, on the product box or in the instruction manual, is you need to purchase the Spektrum program cable and program the receiver via PC in order for the vehicle to be really smart ready.

Awesome review man. I am getting very interested in the smart stuff. The motor esc combo I got for my current project is the dynamight brushed crawler combo (with rebuildable motr), and it has the smart connector. I got some adapters to just keep running the deans I have on my lipos. My radio is the FS Gt5. It works well for what I need it for. Lots of channels, and programmable features. I am generally on a budget (baby coming/bills/a 5 year old/even the dog ahahaha). But all.that said I do need to get into the brushless game, and move to 3s... iv always used 2s. I know... lame.. haha. I'm super stoked to see that Jeep on the trail, and see how that motor esc combo does. I do like the remote though. That program card looks great to. Cheers man. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐😎👍👍

Awesome video and the spectrum eco system, but the look of the control look very cheap and for me a little behind against other manufacturers with that price point, for me the best controller at that price range is the fly sky nb4 (4 channel only disadvantage not 5), and also great for competitive racing (ok for left hand driver too)👍🏻

I dig the concept and having run the Hobbywing Fusion I can appreciate how smooth the set up can be, but Spektrum's price is a bit of a deal breaker. I have a DX4C and have had really excellent luck with its performance and for me it is easy to use one handed. However I picked up a Flysky ten channel for my 1/14th semi and snow plow builds and it was only $30 more than the DX4C and has 6 more channels. Granted Spektum is a lot more affordable than Futaba. I do think the radio and the Smart stuff is good if you have an RTR system and want to upgrade to a radio with more features and you will be able to use with more than one vehicle.

It's a nice radio, but I wouldn't buy the motor esc combo. I am not a HW fan. I prefer CC and Holmes Hobbies, esc motor combos. I've lived all these years w/o telemetry in my cars and trucks. I always use a battery checker with alarm. When it starts beeping I know it's time to wrap up or change the battery. I never run them to cut off any more. Thanks for this Horizon shows it available in april. I just may get it for my TRX4 Defender. Can you show how to mix it for the two speed, and front/rear lockers like the stock Traxxas radio? I love the truck but after three years with the radio. I am ready to change back to spectrum.

Question for you, what do you mean at 10:00 when you say it's not "as reactive" ? Do you mean it doesn't respond as quickly to throttle changes? Or do you mean it doesn't respond as quickly to load changes like when it runs into a bump or steeper climb? Do you have rpm matching set to high? Do you have punch level set to maximum? I don't have mine yet but I believe maxing those 2 parameters out will make it feel most responsive. Nice overview I need one of these!

G'day Matt ol son,....look i can see what your saying an i love it, its a great piece of tech, but I,.. like many people on this channel and others, just couldnt justify the price of of this radio. For the price of this nice piece of tech i could buy a new rig or upgrade my other model with "The Good Stuff", or get the right tools for building/maintain your currant rig/s. There are a few lower priced companys out there that some know, some not, like Flysky, who are getting known for beginner to expert tech. They have what ya need for fraction of the price, and other less know companys are slowly changing and innovating to get involved. My FS-GT3B is 9yrs old and other than losing the battery cover, its never missed a beat. Sorry me m8 for playing devils advocate. when it comes to high priced gadgets that are TOO pricey, ive got to stand up for the poor people of the hobby. Cheers for very cheerful, innuendo plauged and very informative vid ol son (i give it a 9 out of 10 drop bears) from ya ol boy here downunder!!

2 way communication in surface radio systems is the most underused technology, and it blows my mind. Ive been into surface RCs for forever but have the attention span of a squirrel and collect hobbies like acorns. Among those is building and programming 3d printers, as well as arduinos, and most recently falling very far down the fpv drone rabbit hole. It blows my mind that theres no opentx or betaflight equivalents for surface radios. Why arent we running sbus radio systems? Why do all the configurators, from companies look like theyve been slapped together by a middle schooler on a dusty 10 year old hand me down acer laptop?

I think the only thing a surface radio with sbus would benefit is the semi trucks and heavy equipment. As I know Beir sound and light kits can run a bazzillion functions off the sbus.

@@BlueDually4x4 im particularly interested in the idea of assigning functionality to radio buttons as well as the wonderful possibility of addressable rgbw led strings that would be implemented. Im also interested in the idea of tactile feedback on the radio side, imagine force feedback steering, particularly for drifting.

@@BlueDually4x4 I could really go on for ages dreaming up functionality that would truly enhance the experience of running our tiny trucks. I really want to run throttle and brake differently. If I could have it my way Id run gas and brake on the trigger with zero to 10% drag brake, then Id have a momentary button that would switch the system into reverse. So when going down hill you would be modulating a brake instead of relying on a drag brake hold. At neutral the truck would roll as if in neutral.

Lack of Bluetooth kills it for me. Needed BT and maybe even an upgrade to 4S capability to make it a real aftermarket competitor to the HW Axe. If they are rebranding/modifying the Axe, why ditch the BT interface?! The controller is okay but not at $300 with a mediocre interface and an $80 3 channel receiver! I like the drop wheel, but it seems really far out from the rest of your hand, no? Wouldn't you want it closer to the center line so it is less of a stretch? Looks like you have plenty of adjustment for position but not how close it is to the handgrip when using the drop. I dunno. HW Axe plus a FlyskyGT5 is under $300. Maybe they'll leverage their in-house stuff to make a new SCX10III Firma Edition and have a fantastic trail truck with top tier electronics. Redcat's Gen8 Axe proved people will spend the $ on a crawler with great electronics! Edit: Also... snow. Ugh. It has killed my crawling.
