Unbelievable that you know so little about the theory/technical side and then make such fire music. It makes me laugh so hard and also rethink how complicated I make things sometimes haha. Thanks for showing your process

You gotta make a video of how you do your drum patterns. I love that loose dilla/madlib style.

its all timing and velocity and feel. honestly the best thing to do to get that swing is just practice! grab some drum sticks and hit a table with em for two hours a day with a metronome on and you'll get it eventually. dilla and madlib were both drummers and can kill it on a real kit, it just takes time and dedication

Being able to just play it in like that like Spell can is obvs great but I also highly recommend reading the book Dilla Time. In short Dilla did use quantisation sometimes & it's the interplay of quantised and unquantised parts that gives that feel. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eMWWjbmG05qYmGg.html

I think I got this now: keep the lows in the low department, the mids in the mid department, and the highs in the high department.

This video proves you're truly masterful my guy. To everyone else: if your beat sounds lacking, it's NOT because of a bad mix 90% of the time. Sound choice is so much more important, I'm pretty sure no billboard producer has ever been like "Yeah this kick is not that bad. Some mixing will fix it." Go looking for a better kick man. Get into every detail on your patterns to create that "live feel". Sidechains and EQs should be the only mixing techniques that you apply during creative work🚀

the way you're using the rx-950 in this, if you're curious, is it's only adding some warm distortion via the input knob, so it sounds louder but you're also adding grit, and low end harmonics, like the old 12 bit sampler that it emulates.

Mixing is really simple. First, choose decent sounds. Then categorize each sound into what it's function is in the mix; low end, mids, or high end. Then just make sure each sound is only doing that job, and adjust according to your preferences.

for anybody confused, he doesn’t have a lot of knowledge on mixing but it still sounds great without doing too much. using as minimal plugins as possible is the best thing for any mix👍 and yes, you can use some tips and tricks to make it sound better because at the end of the day if it sounds good to your ears then don’t worry about it

i think a lot of people over mix and eq and wonder where their whole mix goes. Just do minimal changes and do basic eq and it should sound okay. I think sound selection is very important also.
@emanuelsv

@@Spyrouz yup, often I save the original bare bones mix of a beat, and then go in and start mixing and mixing, but when I'm done I realize that I just made it sound worse.
@Spyrouz
@Spyrouz Жыл бұрын
@@emanuelsv i think this is also very important to note when using samples from splice and looperman. A lot of those sounds are already compressed and eq'd. A lot of the sounds on splice are also HUGE sounding which takes up so much of the mix. You have kicks that have way too much high end, so thats why sound selections is very important. Sometimes that boring kick actually sounds better with context, then that massive sounding kick you chose because it sounded epic on its own.
@Spyrouz
@Spyrouz Жыл бұрын
@@emanuelsv I do the same thing with saving the bare bones of the mix before making changes, then if i messed it all up, i cant just start again instead of trying to fix a mess.

Yo ! I've been having a hard time getting my 303 to work with my interface. I have my interface going into my 303, then 303 back into my interface. I'm getting some crazy high pitched feedback. I feel like I have it setup incorrectly, how is your 303 plugged in? Would be great to know your input/output set up with it as well. Thanks!
