CBS Radio MYSTERY THEATRE is a radio drama series created and directed by Himan Brown that was broadcast on CBS Radio Network affiliates from 1974 to 1982. Later in the early 2000s the show was repeated by the NPR satellite feed.
The format was similar to that of classic old time radio shows like The Mysterious Traveler and The Whistler, in that the episodes were introduced by host E. G. Marshall who provided pithy wisdom and commentary throughout. Unlike the hosts of those earlier programs, Marshall is fully mortal, merely someone whose heightened insight and erudition plunge the listener into the world of the macabre.
CBS Radio MYSTERY THEATRE was broadcast each weeknight, at first with a new program each night. Later in the run, three or four episodes were new originals each week, and the remainder repeats. There were 1,399 original episodes.

The rabbit hole only gets deeper! There are so many outstanding radio shows to discover but try Nightfall if you haven't yet. Out of Canada and it's the best show I've found! Enjoy!

Yeah there is so much to dive into, I've been listening to these for about three years and still there's more stuff I haven't heard than that which I have. if you haven't listened to these yet, Vincent Price had his own radio horror series called "The Price of Fear" def one to check out, Peter Lorre also had his own show. Such a treasure trove of content.

I don't remember having this type of radio show being broadcast when I was growing up in the 1960's-1980's in rural Montana. Listening now at 64 years old I really enjoy the programs. Thank you for sharing. 👍

I listened, as a small child in the 50s and 60s, and over the years thought I would love to hear them again. Then I discovered KZfaq and I was in heaven when I discovered that they were here. I remember the Emerson tabletop mahogany radio with the big silver knobs we all gathered around at night to hear them. Everyone has passed now, it’s just me left. These radio dramas bring back all the good memories.

E G Marshal was so great narrating these. The best voice. There was on actor that played on these that sounded a lot like him, but can’t think of his name.

CBS Mysteries was the best on the radio. I love the Johnny Dollar series also, the ones that have Bob Bailey in them. So many great radio series. Don’t watch much tv any more. I can do so much while listening too. These let your mind build the story and characters in your mind. I think it keeps your mind active. I sometimes get so into the story that every care passes away and then drift off to sleep at night. Just found your channel. Will suggest it some friends.

I recall seeing an ad for a new series called the CBS Radio Mystery Theater in Time magazine in early 1974, when I was 13 years old. I listened until I was in college by in the early 1980s - not every night, but maybe once a week or so. I recorded maybe 20 or 30 episodes until the show was discontinued and was elated to discover so many episodes were available for sale or trade during the first days of the internet in the early 2000s. Now it seems the entire inventory - nearly 2000 episodes - are available for free on KZfaq, with the audio cleaned-up so you can hear each show clear as can be. I’d love to go back to the 1970s and relive those wonderful days and nights, but it’s nice to at least have these entertaining broadcasts as we face the uncertainty and tumult of the 2020s.
