We will build a deck and play a best 2 out of 3, and the winner will receive a small prize to upgrade their deck. HOWEVER, each episode we will be opening another box of the next set that was released moving in chronological order, constantly upgrading our decks before dueling each other at the end of each episode.

Is it really a point of contention? All the historic format communities seem based in hindsight, but if you want to take specific decklists from past events to play against others doing the same, I don't know why anyone would take issue with that. It's just a bit too niche to sustain years and years of daily ladder grinding...

I am not even a huge fan of Spellbooks but it represents an aspect of yu-gi-oh I've always loved. And that's the continuity. By which I mean the absence of set rotation. A super old card like Jowgen can suddenly become busted depending on the meta. But not just that, an already existing archetype that was mediocre can suddenly become op just because of a single new card.

I remember that when these cards were revealed, Spellbooks were initially feared as a potential Tier 0 deck (at least in the forum I was consulting at the time) because Judgement was more obviously broken and immediately terrifying than any singular card in the game. It took people a few days to realize that Dragon Rulers were generally better, though some players maintained to the end that only a massive amount of siding could make them beat Spellbooks, while the latter could stick to what it did against other decks and come out on top. Thank you for this series, it is awesome to relive all those memories and discover new aspects of the game!
@JudojugsVtuber
@JudojugsVtuber 2 жыл бұрын
the biggest issue that i remember at the time was that most decks could handle one but not the other. You could have a good matchup against rulers (like monarchs or Mermail) but your matchup against spellbooks would always leave you out of top cuts. A lot of people regard spellbook as "the deck that stopped tier 0 rulers" but honestly I think spellbooks were far more oppressive and harder to counter leading to the entire reason the format was a 2 deck format. If other decks didnt have to compete with 2 different "tier 0" strategies I don't think either deck would have been tier 0 on their own.
@shadowfox4562
@shadowfox4562 2 жыл бұрын
@@JudojugsVtuber completely agree. I played spellbook at this time and people forget that spellbook would have won worlds if not for that bad misplay by the spellbook player and a top decked blaster.
@mohamedabdallah1235
@mohamedabdallah1235 2 жыл бұрын
@@JudojugsVtuber I certainly agree that what we were dealing with was a sort of "twin-headed Tier 0 format" at the time, with the two decks being tremendously powerful. And there's certainly a case to be made for Spellbooks being the more oppressive of the two at least in some ways: outside of hard-drawn handtraps, the Rulers rarely interacted with you on your own turn, while Spellbooks had built-in ways to interrupt you/put you under the Jowgen lock, something which did hurt pretty much any deck of the time, not just the Rulers. I think that the reason why the Rulers are generally seen as more powerful is both their incredible consistency (as we saw in game 1, Spellbooks needed a little bit more setup for their basic plays while the Rulers could always go into at least a Rank 7 per turn) and also the fact that the archetype as a whole turned out to be more broken than Spellbooks. The latter were a good but not outstanding deck that got 1 absolutely crazy piece of support, which meant that banning Judgment pretty much solved the problem, while the Dragon Rulers would continue to be dominant for several months after being heavily hit on the banlist, and even after further hits they remained a threat for a long time. As for Mermail, while I don't remember exactly what could help it against the Rulers, I do remember that its case illustrated perfectly the degree of powercreep that was unleashed on the game: here we had a deck that had arguably been the most powerful of the previous formats, had gotten a massive boost in explosivity and recovery thanks to the Tidal package, and was nonetheless completely overshadowed by the new competition.

I can't tell you how many packs of REDU I bought. With the help of friends, I managed to get and build a Spellbook/Prophecy deck very similar to the one Cimo used, including 3 Judgments...about 2 weeks before it was banned. I took a second break when Pendulums released, coming back AGAIN during Covid and updated both of my decks from that time to be current-meta relevant (-ish): Madolche and a Spellbook Dogmatika deck. Thank you Cimo and Joseph for the nostalgia!

Obelisk was viable in that DR had a rough time outing it. Armory arm + Any DR wasn't cutting it and you couldn't target the god. I was kinda extremely casual back then and all I wanted was to summon Obelisk. I played DR and made Tomahawk to summon Obelisk, many "more experienced players took weird Ls if I succeeded. In unrelated news, Evilswarm, I would argue, wasn't that viable tho. They could open hands that didn't make Ophion and opening a trap that protects from Blaster wasn't common, not to mention it lost most of its other match ups. You could smokescreen into Dino Rabbit tho, which was hilarious.

I just tried playing Spellbooks for the frist time. It never seemed interesting but I just felt like giving it a try an I have to say, it was actually very fun. It has the old grind game feeling to it like in old school yu-gi-oh. But the sheer amount of card advantage Judgment can create is defenitely insane. A control based deck that focuses on main deck monsters while creating pluses like a modern deck. Basically taking the best of both. Very creative and innovate idea. That's also why I am watching this. It gives me an incentive to play decks an archetypes I've never tried before.

Holy crap game 2,yes these days going plus a lot isn't that inusual but That was wild,and in game 1 you saw how even without judgment you could just out grind your opponent until your victory was inevitable,so so cool,really spellbooks were a precursor of sky striker

I'm glad Cimo managed to pilot Spellbooks pretty well. The one thing I'd say is try to not banish Eternity with Fate because you only have 1 and there is no way to get the banished Eternity back. You usually want to return Eternity back to the Deck with Tower.

Hi Alex, Not sure if you have ever considered doing a show based on the anime? You and co host could randomly select a character throughout Yu-Gi-Oh history then duel only using cards that they have actually used. Imagine the possibilities. You can have Bakura Vs Brock one week or Jaiden Vs Jack Atlas..

Uh actually there's a couple of things I want to bring up here because they're inaccuracies in the video. First, Dragon Rulers didn't win the EU WCQ, Spellbooks did. Chris Bountaloudis won 2-1. Secondly, the EU WCQ actually came before the NA WCQ, which means it was Patrick Hoban's list that was the later iteration and not this list. There is certainly interesting points of discussion between the two lists, but it does I think bear nothing that Hoban's list was likely a little more refined (the Horus tech over Spell Canceller I think is a big one as a searchable answer to Prophecy). Main deck Vanity's Emptiness was something I also remembered as being a very late format tech which is why I did the digging. They aren't huge but I think it's worth pointing out.

26:30 Cimo forgot to resolve the second part of Judgment, which would have gotten him a Spellbook Magician of Prophecy. Even if he chose not to activate it, he should probably have acknowledged that its part of the effect as it resolves.

I skipped out on this era since I took a 6-7 year break from the game starting in late 2011/early 2012. I can't help but feel this is just incredibly similar to TOSS format. You have some big dragons that activate their effects by banishing and are a massive pain to permanently get rid of, vs a deck that spams spells to generate insane card advantage, and can essentially search any other card in the deck. It's literally just Sky Striker vs Thunder Dragon 5 years before either archetype was a thing.
