Let's talk spells in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything! There area a few reprints and the rest are updated versions of what we've seen in Unearthed Arcana before. I'm not really big on the summon spells, but I think the others are pretty awesome. My biggest complaint is what spell lists they land on.

@@lawrenceethan1675 I agree! The 3.5 Spell compendium was drastically more vast for the proportional amount of spells it introduce compared to what was available. Plus with so many reprinted spells it felt like Tasha's Cauldron of Yesterday's left overs. A bit of Lore about D&D in this book, and rules/guidelines for homebrewing new spells. Would have made it a much better flavor for this Cauldron.

The operative words of Dream of the Blue Veil are "such as," meaning the spell isn't limited to those four destinations; those are just examples. The target of Tasha's Mind Whip makes the choice, not the caster.

Read Blue Veil to my girlfriend and the first thing she thought of was the Once Upon a Time tv show. Want to take your D&D party into Mothergoose Land? How about an adventure a long long time ago in a galaxy far far away? This spell dies that if your DM wants it to.

Dream of Blue Veil is a terrible spell. I already went into detail on why it's so bad on a different video so I'll just re-post it. When I first heard of Dream of the Blue Veil from the leaks, as a DM I was terrified. A spell that instantly force you into having to run a game world your had no knowledge of is objectively horrifying. However when TCE was released and I read all of the conditions that it tales to even use my only thought was "They wasted a 6th level spell on this?". This spell doesn't come online to players until 13TH LEVEL, and still requires an absurd amount of conditionary effects to even cast it. If I as a DM am even planning to run a multi-dimensional campaign, why would I wait until 13th level to do it?, and more importantly why wouldn't I already have a mcguffin in place to let my players do it without wasting a 6th level spell slot? Dream of Blue Veil is at best a trap spell and at worst a waste of printing ink.
@LandonTheDM
@LandonTheDM 3 жыл бұрын
@@matthewdykeman8149 I mean it really doesn't force you to do anything. You can tell your players, "nah, choose a different spell" or "welp you have no magic items and know no people from other worlds and know of no other worlds." It's just opening up possibilities for you. if you wanted to run a multi-dimensional campaign you would insert other ways of travelling between that the lower level PCs would use. Just like you would if you wanted to do a campaign with the PCs hopping planes before they get Plane Shift (which is 7th level btw and also requires something attuned to the other place)

I just realized from Ted's video that it's even worse then I first thought. One it's a ten minute out of combat spell that isn't a ritual. Two it renders your party UNCONCSIOUS for 6 HOURS with only damage snapping you out, any half-way intelligent BBEG doesn't need damage to kill you. Three if you do snap out and aren't the caster the spell only cuts out for you, meaning your allies are still transported and your left by yourself with whatever attacked you. This is a bigger trap then Find Traps.

The reason i like the summons is because its a safe meatshield where you dont need to worry about it going crazy when concentration is broken. Obviously if you're confident, the more risky summons like greator demon has their perks and varies from situation to situation. Obviously these are a massive buff to a conjuration wizard with their ability to never lose concentration on conjuration spells.

Conjure animals have the issue where the dm can fuck up your summons. (personally, if you bring the stat block, have auto dice roller with presets for all their attacks and abilities. id let you pick the summons so long you make their turns quick)
@dilsoncamacho4100
@dilsoncamacho4100 3 жыл бұрын
@@thespeedkingomega6357 IMHO the DM should fuck up the summons, probably force the guy to roll for what summon they get or the DM chooses - the issue is that the guy might just conjure 8 wolves (attack for 2d4+2 with advantage from pack tactics and the bitten enemy must pass a dc 11 strength save or be knocked prone for each wolf) or maybe even more if they over level the cast. Other cr 1/4 animals are just crazy OP if you summon 8+ like giant poisonous snakes, constrictor snakes, giant wolf spiders or even the cr 1/8 giant crab. With no DM control conjure woodland beings and animate objects are also very OP IMHO.
@thespeedkingomega6357
@thespeedkingomega6357 3 жыл бұрын
@@dilsoncamacho4100 We can agree to disagree, Thank you for being civilized about it. Honestly for me, the issue isn't the summons, its the player in question. I'm a firm believer that if the tools are there, they got every right to use them, especially if it fits their character concept. I reserve the ban/nerf hammer for things that REALLY deserve it, it takes a lot for something to get me to use it. Woodland beings isn't one of them. My only problem is when it reduces combat to a crawl. like I said, if they bring the stat block, have auto dice roller with presets for all their attacks and abilities, and consistently make their turns quick. Id let the palyer chose. And if you really want to speed it up further, divide the summons in 2 groups and roll once for both and that group fully hits or misses, but that's my two cents. If they make it the most efficient/less intrusive way they can, they earn the right to chose.

Edit for clarity: I am not saying this comment is whining/complaining/demanding. Just that the topic has been pressed enough to bother Ted. He has given his opinion already on them, as he stated with a lot of emphasis, in previous videos. So the value already is there. Essentially it comes down asking for him to repeat himself instead of just cover what's changed/the same and remarking on it with new comments on what's changed if it warrants. I'm think he could get burned out repeating content. I also highly appreciate Ted's opinions but don't want him to get bored with covering this. 5:28-6:20 Regarding using Shadow Blade in combination with Booming Blade or Green-Flame Blade. Technically speaking, a spell scroll containing the Shadow Blade spell (being a consumable uncommon magic item) would cost around 250gp. And spell casters in general can typically charge anywhere from 10gp-50gp per spell slot level for every spell they cast for you (i.e. the spell slot/magic alone is that valuable) and this is considered normal/reasonable within most DND worlds. So in a sense, despite not being a physical object, if the requirement is that the weapon has a monetary value then I would argue that Shadow Blade does. Otherwise spellcasters wouldn't charge for their services nor would the spell scroll cost anything.

What's good about Tasha's Mind Whip is that it does not cost your concentration and deals psychic damage (very few creatures are resistant). I love ALL of the "psionic" (i.e., psychic-damage) spells, and agree that Tasha's Mind Whip ought to be on both the Bard and Warlock spell lists, and will house rule them that way in my campaigns, especially since both get both Synaptic Static from XGtE and Mind Sliver from this book. While I agree that the best Summon spells from this book are the 3rd-level choices as far as utility or "attack plus special effect" functions go, and I DON'T dislike conjuration spells the way you do because they add meat shields to the field AND weaponize a spellcaster's bonus actions (though Spiritual Weapon is probably better, at least for clerics), frankly I strongly prefer the various "Conjure X" spells from the PH and Xanathar's. I also agree that simply giving the Booming Blade and Green Flame Blade cantrips a range of "Self," thus allowing them to be added to reach weapons (or if you, for example, become an 18th-level Runic Knight and add five feet to your reach) is appropriate. These options are so limited (multiclassing with a class that can use Martial weapons, or REACHING 18TH LEVEL AS A FRIKKIN' BARBARIAN, which means the character will never be much of a spellcaster) that they're not really worth worrying about. If a character wants to be a Pact of the Blade warlock and use a Glaive, well, even if it's a Hexblade; it's really not that worrisome a build. I MIGHT have been a bit more worried about giving reach to somebody who could cast Enlarge IF Enlarge increased reach, IF it was available to warlocks AND if getting to 18th-level Runic Knight allowed a Warlock to cast second-level spells, but none of these is true. So ... yeah. Changing the "Blade" cantrips to a range of Self? Not a problem for me. Finally ... Dream of the Blue Vale? This is a DM/campaign adventure hook, and NOTHING more. The DM will NEVER let a spellcaster get away with casting this spell unless (S)HE WANTS THE SPELL CAST, and it does absolutely NOTHING useful for the party. What it does is allow the DM to change his or her campaign setting. I would never, EVER learn this spell as a bard, sorcerer or druid, and frankly, if it was offered to me in a scroll or spellbook as a wizard, I'd sell that scroll or spellbook before allowing a DM to tempt me with it. If a DM wants to change his or her campaign setting, I will gladly go along, but THE DUNGEON MASTER has to come up with the hook for changing the campaign setting. The PLAYERS don't have to, and should never, surrender precious resources in order to indulge a DM's whims.

In regards to the First World origin of the multiverse, there are lore hints here and there to suggest it all began at a central point or world. Some are more direct than others. Some have to be inferred. In short, let's just say that the world of Theros has more in common with the D&D multiverse than is let on. Either way, I am now curious to see if my other theories are correct. Such as the source of the "cataclysm" and how the multiverse first grew, its life cycle and how we gamers have interpreted it through mechanical shifts. 🤔

I really like the new summon spells, but mostly as a DM instead of a player. I'd love to push my players towards using this new spells INSTEAD of the older ones. The problem is that almost all older ones are exploitable in one way or another - the older spells weren't really made for balance but more for theme, and that would result in stuff like conjure animals for hordes of little critters or conjuring a bunch of feys with concentration polymorph - on the other hand there was stuff like conjure elemental where they conjured creature can be freed by losing concentration. This new spells are much better for a DM to manage during combat and for preventing crazy exploits. Plus, while the new spells have a component cost, the components are not consumed, so you only need to craft that trinket once.

@spatha08
@spatha08 3 жыл бұрын
The blade spells work with warcaster. You are mixing up range with target. The blade spells still follow the war caster qualification. The spell must have a casting time of 1 action and must target only that creature. From Boomingblade "You brandish the weapon used in the spell's casting and make a melee attack with it against one creature within 5 feet of you". As such the target is the one creature within 5' of you that you attack. The change of range to self only impacts twin spell which makes sense.

@frking100
@frking100 3 жыл бұрын
Not how it works the creature is the one that chooses which action to take so you cant cheese it and say it can only bonus action. The way to go about is to cast web and then mind whip causing the creature to be unable to move out if it fails a dex and int saving throw. Mind you that means you need 2 casters to use their lvl 2 spells (and unless they are sorcerers their full turns) to restrain a single creature for a semi guaranteed 1 round and trade one of your pc turns for 1 of the enemies for every next round after. Even then this causes you to go negative in the turn economy and you might have created dangerous terrain for your martial classes. Or you can abuse mind whip and mind sliver (if you are a sorcerer) to completely nullify a creatures turn which is the better alternative, the strat is for you to cast mind sliver then bonus action mind whip have the martial classes hit the creature and step 15 feet back rinse and repeat until monster dies but seeing as how this combo burn through spell slots and sorcery points at a fast rate the monster you are targeting better be a big threat or else once again you are loosing bigtime in the turn economy.

 @Nerd Immersion respectfully, if I could offer a counter arguement, BB does require that a melee attack be made. So although you are casting a spell, you are not actually making a spell attack. @Svydenhal Not going to argue too much with you because I also think that it scales too well. Some nitpicks though. 1. Jim's Glutenfree Magic Missle? Who the fuck uses this spell to illustrate a point? I doubt that more than 50% of the Dm's even know that "Acquisition Incorporated" even exists.Let alone this specific spell. (Also one "1" and your whole turn is wasted and you may lose conc. on spirit shroud.) 2.You said "at low levels" but then used it as an 5th level spell in your example. Which you gain access to at 9th level which I think are not "low levels" .That's almost halve the Level cap lol. 3.In your example "without even going all out" you compare a 10th level wizard to a 11th level Warlock.Not that it really matters or changes anything but still... But for my arguments: It only really gets broken once you reach 9th level because the damage scale every two spellslot above 3rd level. Before that it's basically a hex which only works in melee reach range or bestow curse which doesn't require a saving throw and is only for damage and negating healing. The spell only works when within 10 feet of you.So you could go within 10 feet of the enemy and then after you have attacked you could use your movement to "disengage" but because it is so close many larger enemies will have a AoO at you. Which could seriously fuck you up.Additionaly if they use their movement to move away from you are probaldly not making it back into 10 feet range therefore wasting a turn of no bonus damage etc. A hexblade with their med. Armour prof. may not worry about that so much and your wizard could spend his reaction to cast shield but those would be additional ressources spend. But because you need to be so close to the enemy you need to put yourself much more in harm's way than normal. Do I think the spells busted? maybe not busted but really really strong. There some advantages to the "Aura style" of this spell you don't need to only focus your damage on one guy like with hex which you would need a bonus action to move the curse (not that warlocks have really a use for bonus actions but still.).There is no save the enemy can do. It is a hex which scales and has upsides if you are in the spells range and because hex itself is pretty busted.that's really not a good recipe. It caps for warlocks at 2d8 because of pact magic but if you plan to go into melee anyway it's a better choice than hex because it doesn't scale damage wise. Sry for the long ass fcking comment

@@ericmeyer5474 I used spirit shroud in a recent oneshot specifically to test out Tasha new stuff, was Lvl 10, oneshot the main boss which was an aboleth. Lower level wise, it’s just a better hex, but you have to remember that hex requires a BA to constantly switch targets which spirit shroud does not, a starting 1d8, that lessens speed, and even prevents heals, is just nonsensical. Meanwhile the fact of the matter is that it makes Blood Hunters irrelevant, along with any other dice boost to attacks that for example rogues have. Yes, wizards are weak HP wise, but any good wizard will prevent the enemy from landing hits on them through various methods from mirror image to, as you stated, shield. Less range is the only objective issue with the spell, everything else is positives.

Range self with a 5 foot radius is perfect for Sword Burst. But the other SCAG cantrips? Really? Lightning Lure is a single target ranged attack, requiring a ranged attack roll would make sense, but range self with an area of effect makes no sense. A range of self for Booming Blade and Greenflame Blade makes sense, the 5 foot radius does nothing but exclude reach weapons and ensure that Eldritch Knight builds will be even more uniform than the already are. If they hate these cantrips so much why include them at all?
