How to kill bees and wasps from a distance

I show how I made a spray arm extender to kill a nest of yellow jackets from a greater distance that most aerosol insecticides can reach. It was made from some metal scraps that I had in the home with no additional cost. I used 1/8" X 1" flat plate, about 3" of 1/4" threaded rod, and a few nuts. A welder was used to to put it together but this could be made from plastic and glue if one desires.
The device fits most aerosol bottles and is fairly versatile. Some aerosol canisters have a large flat trigger with a plastic guard around that, so for those devices I tape a few coins on top of the trigger.
Inexpensive plastic aerosol spray arm extenders are available commercially.
This is a fun little project to do in the home. That said, any DIY project involves some risk of misadventure, so watch out for your safety if you decide to tackle this yourself. Aerosol spray bottles can discharge or explode if not handled safely so you need to be careful. This video is published for entertainment purposes only and is not an instructional guide.

Nice design and well made! I made up something similar for the spray wand from a standard 12 volt motorized spray tank, (a standard pump up would work fine also). I added another 20 ft of hose and attached my home made gizmo to the end of an aluminum extendable paint pole which is quite rigid and yet light weight. Using a mixture of dish soap and peppermint oil in water solution I was able to stay a good distance away and spray the dickens out of them. Doing so at night is advisable, but don't use a headlamp type light...(yes, that was dumb!). I also use this spray rig to apply an organic insecticide way up into the canopy of several of the large trees on our property which get some kind of a white fly infestation every few years.

Ever since I saw a beekeeper move a swarm of honey bees, I've had respect for what you guys do. It's too bad that honey bees have had such a hard time lately, with mites and competition from other species. I tried that soda trick a few times, but for yellow jackets in my hands it doesn't work so well. The way yellow jackets are attracted to food makes August a difficult month around here. Thanks for your input!

brilliant! i looked under my 94 ram and i looked at the gas tank and a large hornets nest with hornets stared me in the face. i used wd40 and they didnt like it, they flew away and i took out the nest over the winter. I was scared lol, i think I broke a land speed world record haha.

Yes, there's nothing like a demonstration to show that to viewers. I had the PVC laying around so didn't have to buy it, but if I had to buy something I would try using 3/4" electrical metal conduit. It's fairly cheap and much more rigid but not so heavy you can't hold it at length.

Now that a clever rig. I had hives the size of a small basketball to remove in the last couple of years up at my hunting camp. They seem to pick the inner peaks of the buildings. Found out they are completely docile 2 hours after dark. use a large stick to knock it down and still run like hell but never been stung. I tried the foam but the nest stays and they come back. If you get them when the nest is small your rig is the way to go.

Spray it down with a hose just before dusk, run like hell. Return at night spray the shit out of the nest and run like hell again. Day comes observe it from a distance and reassess. There just saved you tons of time making some stupid rod thing

Thanks, Harry. No honey from yellow jackets -- those things sting humans all the time, and are often really aggressive around a food source. There are no insects I hate more than yellow jackets.

Agreed! Those crazy Yellow Jackets love Sugars and Meats-Bigtime! If you're eating anything like that near a Yellow jackets nest, you're likely to get inundated with the little Stingers, real quick!

If you have a bees nest or wasp nest in your yard and you need to get rid of it I know a way, it works every time we did it (The Nest were not big they were normal sized and small) you don't really have to get that close to it either (it will kill them so if you don't want to kill them then just keep scrolling if you don't care about killing them then here you go). you can get stung if you're not careful. Safest way 1: Have about 3 people (you can do it by yourself it'll just go faster with more people) 2: wear long sleeves and long pants.(you don't have to I just don't like my skin to show just in case) 3: get a water gun for each person. 4: fill each water gun with warm soapy water (lots of soap, I don't think it's a specific type of soap but just in case we use the dish soap.) 5: surround the nest in shooting range (preferably with the farthest you can get) 6: then completely drench the nest in soap water it'll kill all of them. Please do this with caution also only killed them if they're like on your balcony or in your window please don't just go out into the woods see a nest and kill them that's not fair that's their home and it's not in yours. Yeah, I understand, simple solutions are often the best. I once asked a professional why they use a long arm to hold the spray can, and he relied that it saves money on insecticide. By getting the can closer they can kill a nest with less scatter of the chemical.

Spelunk I have a can of Raid that must spray about 25 feet and I mean it shuts them all down. They aren't stinging nobody .

You make a really good point about doing it first time in the morning. That little hive had lots of yellow jackets all over it that morning, but unfortunately I didn't film it before the first salvo with my little tool. I've seen professionals wrap the whole hive in a paper bag, but I wouldn't be so brave to do that myself.

Simpler method. Take an small empty (pop or juice) bottle with cap. Drill a hole in the cap big enough to allow a wasp or yellow jacket in, put either fruit juice or a bit of molasses & water filling the bottle a third of the way. Place it on the ground near the nest. They will enter the bottle to drink the sweet stuff, and will be unable to fly out. Eventually, they fall in the liquid and drown. No need for toxic chemicals. If your area has winter freezing temperatures, you can also remove the nest safely in winter.

Thank you. I've had a couple of cynical and rude remarks on this video complaining that I shouldn't kill bees, or any insects. But yellowjackets are aggressively territorial, and not easy to live beside, especially when the hive occupies part of my house. I respect the viewpoint that insects have a place in the ecosystem. But the practicality of how to deal with a nest on my doorstep is otherwise a huge problem. Of course honeybees are easy to deal with by consulting a beekeeper, but yellowjackets are a completely different challenge. Nobody wants them, and they dominate the flying insect population here.

Yes, within a few seconds they drop to the ground, paralyzed and unable to fly.

Thanks for the video. I'm in Arizona, USA and I have Killer Bees in a crack by my pool. Usually you should not plug up the crack with the colony inside, because it is assumed they are on a house wall, and after having that entrance blocked, they will find another way out, which is usually to the inside of your home. But since this is by my pool, I'm going to risk it. Going to shoot some spray foam insulation in there. Just enough to plug opening, 'cause it does expand... ALOT. Going to make a device like this. These bees are VERY aggressive. They have "bumped" me in the back of the head! It's their warning before they attack. They come up to my face so close that I can slap them away. They keep coming back for more. Little jerks. Going to meet their maker in an hour after I make my gadget. :)

We had a similar situation a few years ago and we hired a pro. He used a peanut butter that he applied to the entrance which killed the whole colony. I was shocked to find he only charged us 30$. Of course he had to be careful not to put it where dogs and other innocent bystanders might be harmed. I think he worked at the university and did this as a part time job.

The pesticide was mixed with peanut butter so the yellow jackets would take it back to the nest and feed the developing larve.

I was trimming shrubs around the house in Carmel, IN, have mulch around house. Suddenly I was attacked by a swarm of very aggressive brown wasps. I had difficulty getting away from them, and finally rolled in the grass and came inside to escape their stings. One came inside. It was brown and umbrella shaped. I'm not sure what it was that stung me about 15-20 times. I couldn't find a stinger in any of the stings which is why I think the insect is probably a wasp. The stings still burn after three hours and are painful. I immediately showered, applied hydrocortisone cream and ice to the stings and took diphenhydramine 50 mg. to prevent reactions. I don't see a nest so am unable to comment about that. They are more painful stings than I've gotten in the past. Do you know what this might be?

Great idea. We live upstate N Y , log home and this is the first year we have had a problem with carpenter bee,s.they are not aggressive until you try swatting them away.any ideas?

+Thx1138sober Ha ha. If you've ever seen those swarms of insects around caribou, you'd pause and wonder how those insects survive. I've often wondered why insects do better on the plains at higher latitudes. Perhaps it's something related to survival of predators, which require a continuous food supply. Surprisingly, insects tend to be huge and annoying in the Canadian plains, with an intense but short growth cycle. Sadly, honeybees have taken a major hit, and the dominant stinging insects are yellow jacket wasps and of course mosquitoes.

Been there, from about mid June to mid Aug, it's skeeter hell, then it turns cold again. Then there is Texas, way too many bugs and you only get a break in Jan and Feb. That's why I like Kentucky, rarely too cold and not overrun with bugs.

Bumble bees are the innocent good guys of the forest. It's very rare to ever be stung by a bumble bee, and even their nests are unobtrusive. They do great things for the ecosystem so I wouldn't ever go after them....

If you live in a cold climate I'd wait a month or two. Most of the insects die over the winter and they normally do not use the same nest next season. In really cold weather they can't fly anyway, so a broom would be safe, and WD40 would be unnecessary.

I would ask around for any interested beekeepers. They love dealing with swarms, though your problem is a little different.

Absolutely! I only wish we had any honey bees left, I haven't seen one in a few years. In this area, yellow jackets have swept the field, it is very sad.

That's a very good question. I can tell you that the reason professionals use a mechanical extender is because of economics. Spraying from 20 feet requires more insecticide than does spraying from 3 feet, and there's less unnecessary scatter of chemical around the yard, especially on a windy day.

I had wasps on my broken jeep trunk and I ended up just spraying them with the jet on my water hose I came back a while later to start working on the trunk then one tried to sting me in my ear and I made the most hilarious bark growl type thing it was so funny

Ha ha ha, very funny! The new chemical poisons work really well so I don't see a big reason to use the vacuum, unless you are trying to move a honey bee colony without killing too many bees. Newer sprays can shoot a long way, but the closer you get the canister the less insecticide you will use for the job. Thanks for your comment.

Sadly, we don't have any honey bees left around here, the dominant species (the yellowjacket) has taken over. Killing that hive was cheaper than moving out of the house, and it was also safer for me, since I get hives when I am on the receiving end of yellowjacket stings.

The global population had a tough time with mite infestations. Of more concern is the recent study looking at the total insect population compared to many decades ago. There has been a dramatic fall in the total number of all insects, and you have to think we humans have had a hand in that.

NEVER use water only to kill deadly wasps, or yellow jackets. Honey bees will sting , but not as much and yellow jackets and wasps do! Honey bees when too many , you best do something about their nests!
