They did a good job..I have a 2011 M3.. From what I gathered it was the incorrect Motor Oil Weight that was the cause of rod bearing failure.. Yeah you had to go to BMW to buy the correct Oil or order it but it would prevent catastrophic failure.. It's the nature of every day people go outside the dealer and install the wrong oil weight to save a few dollars..
@TheFrenchPug
@TheFrenchPug Жыл бұрын
You can get the right oil weight from anywhere. Even Amazon. So why would people go outside the dealer and not be able to get the right oil? I've done mine for 10 years now. N54 engine. Never went to the dealer. Not getting ripped off.

Yeah... I Always took my car too the Dealer an paid Big Money.. 🤣😂 The M3 S65 Engine Was Something Else.. BMW had too modify the Original Suggest Oil Weight too prevent Rod Bearing Failure..The Dealers Are Usually the First To Know About the Suggested Changes..

I am going to be doing mine soon, 123k miles on my 2008 M5. I've had a blackstone oil analysis done on every single oil change and they've trended no metal wear since 70k miles, so I'm not terribly worried. But given the total mileage I will be doing them this year. If I were local to you I'd definitely take advantage of that discount, but I'm in Raleigh, NC.
@jgizzy

Camride! How did your bearings turn out? Were they super worn or surprisingly good? At 123k miles and Blackstone Labs saying it looks good, I think an inquiry of how you maintain your vehicle is in order. Cold weather, many cold starts, long oil change intervals, etc...

Impressive to change the rod bearings that quickly and the motor mounts with an oil change and diff/ tranny. BMWs are not easy to work on and it is typical to drop the subframe to get to the oil pan and what a pain it is. Lets face it the V8 in the E90's is very high strung and yes it is going to need parts replaced. That is just the nature of a BMW always has been and always will be...

$2K for rod bearing install isn't bad when it is done in one day and done right. All BMWs are labor intensive to work on frankly. BMW as a rule uses way more fasteners than other cars and a lot of those fasteners and parts are special made for a purpose. That is why they still are running well if maintained at 200-300K miles when your Corvette is a rattle trap.
@jgizzy
@jgizzy 5 жыл бұрын
@@fun2drive107 To be fair, even though some Corvette interiors and plastic paneling isn't that great, the mechanicals are generally good enough to make them the most reliable sports car around if not bastardized or race beat.

@kearneyboy
@kearneyboy 6 жыл бұрын
This is deemed as preventative maintenance, what the technician is saying is actually quite accurate. The bearings are a few thousandths of an inch too tight at manufacturing and cause an accelerated wear pattern causing eventual failure under hard use.

lol if you know the issues of the S65 you'd know that they are right, the clearance was too tight and sometimes oil doesn't get in there causing accelerated wear.

I would like to point out that all rod bolts stretch, majority of all OEM fasteners use torque to angle i.e. 50ft lbs + 180* where as aftermarket fasteners like ARP torque to stretch which is far more accurate than a torque wrench. I always go by stretch on ARP rod bolts because it eliminates the variable of an inaccurate torque wrench....and yes even the most expensive Snap-on digital torque wrench will have ~5ft lb repeated variance. ARP rod bolts will stretch the same amount EVERY TIME.

Do the numbers on the rods not indicate what sized bearings go in to the motor? I've done the bearings in race bikes before and you have to read the codes off the cases and crank to ensure you buy the right sized bearings. Some builders will use a looser bearing to free up a bit of power as well.

Shocking to think that any car company today would consider this routine maintenance even on a high performance vehicle if it wasn't tracked or abused every weekend. Maybe the entire lower end is just under engineered. This is not what I would call routine maybe that's why there are soooooo many for sale for less that $25K for a car that had a MSRP of $60K+

Have you had any issue with your diff? I'm 97% sure that my Diff broke when the car was 3 months old, but BMW keep saying it's fine, and the sound I get at full throttle in 2'nd must be some vibration ... now the vibration is gone, but I'm sure that the diff if gone as well, as I'm losing traction in 1,2,3 with brand new tires as I take turns ... and it feel like it's the inside wheel spinning ... wonder if I can get them to fix it under 'warranty' as I have complained about it since the car was new (and it's in the service notice).

Lots of BS - why replace rod bearings? If you HAVE to replace rod bearings then you have to replace piston rings, valve stems, the whole works - with the engine out (and how are they checking the clearances without being able to spin the engine by hand?) Completely unnecessary, unless you feel good throwing cash at your E90 M3 having zero technical knowledge ("and where do the rod bearings sit?")...
@jgizzy
@jgizzy 5 жыл бұрын
No that's not true. If you have to replace the rod bearings due to X-reason, that does not mean at all that other parts need to be replaced. Rod bearings get lubricated after crank bearings do, valve stem seals fail over time, temperature, and rubber degradation. Piston rings fail for many reasons but not just because rod bearings are over-stressed and under-oiled at cold startups.

Just to explain to you guys something how poorly engineered this motor is..... that's usually a 50-60k maintenance lol DO U KNOW WHAT 2,500-3,000$ gets you in a LS motor lol MY GUY!!!!!!! We talking cams and lifters/ springs and the whole nine good to go for another 100k miles filled with all that extra power. Rod bearing failure what a joke lol then it's gonna be his throttle actuators and then the clutch lol talk all the shit u want about American cars they still better then m motors. And don't even get me started with how much AMG shits on BMW motor wise

Alen Pepic I mean I'm all for American muscle and shit....but you are comparing a hand built motorsport engine to a Chevy engine?? LS for performance money wins to pretty much anything.

David Mitchell AMG is the only motor hand built in this convo. BMW I REPEAT CANNOT MAKE A BULLET PROOF MOTOR since the 90's they all die at 100k miles LS are perfected and when u need to do maintence everything is accessible and everything works in harmony price wise

Alen Pepic well not here in Europe ls is expensive and parts are not everywhere! Also M engines are hand built, just not by one person like AMG. My S62 V8 is 230k miles and pulling after only doing vanos. plus new S63Tu proved itself to be pretty reliable so far! Don't get me wrong though I'm a big LS fan specially LS7.

David Mitchell no the engine is thrown all over the place to be worked on, the long block of a S65 or s85 M motor will be assembled somewhere else. it's nowhere near the levels of a AMG motor where it's one person working on it hence they call it hand built and not HANDS BUILD lol notice the plural. It says a lot about the build quality for BMW and AMG. AMG's method WORKS WAY BETTER
