I worked at an “adult-leaning top 40” radio station in 1996. We avoided playing this song for SO long because it was what our 55-year-old general manager called “gangster rap”. When it became SUCH a huge hit, and we couldn’t ignore it anymore, we had to produce a “no-rap” version. Had to grab parts of this instrumental to cover up the “Yoooooooo” parts 🤣 When “Say You’ll Be There” came along, we even had to edit out the “I’ll give you everything / On this I swear / Just promise you’ll always be there” part, because it was spoken word...and therefore, “gangster rap”.

I think this songs better without words. Like the beat. Takes me back to the 90s. The best music era I miss those days but I will always remember jamming out to this growing up. Best beat I think.

The Spice Girls were a NUCLEAR explosion. People sometimes forget about them and its understandable because they literally were around for a little less than 2 years as the original 5 girl group that the world liked. In 2 years they sold over 80M records from just 2 albums, made a movie which was a box office hit, it made 3 times the budget spent, their merchandise was like something never seen among pop artists (chocolates, candies, chips, pepsi cans, other cans, barbies, dolls, clothing, accessories, polaroid camera, playstation game and even a scooter). Huge artists like Madonna, Britney and Mariah have had to make so many albums to reach similar numbers. Not to mention that people forget how BIG wannabe was when it was released, just to remind some people, the song reached No.1 in 37 countries in ACTUAL charts (way before Spotify and iTunes charts). After Wannabe it took 20 years for a song to be this huge! until 2017 when Despacito was released by Luis Fonsi ft Daddy Yankee, the song reached No.1 in 40 countries, later on with Justin Bieber, they were able to add another 3 English-speaking countries. Hits like Wannabe don't come around that often.
