I would normally always tune to open G, but I really think there is something magic about blues in open E. I think it's my preferred slide tuning now, I love not having to tune the high e string down, always feels so janky in open G

Thank you very much. I’m suffering thumb problem and I can’t use pick for some month : why not trying play with bottleneck ? Damned it’s hard, first time bottleneck first Time finger picking, first Time open tuning. But your video with your explaination help me a lot. After two weeks I am still on the basic groove part. It’s hard but I love it :):) Thank you for that.

This was a fantastic lesson. I’m just starting on my slide and resonator journey, I’m mostly used to playing classic rock power chords. I just bought a Gretsch Honey Dipper and it feels totally foreign to me in a good way. I’m looking forward to watching more of your lessons

Fantastic lesson. Love that open E sound too. Do you have any names I could punch in on Spotify and listen to old blues players who favoured this particular tuning? Thanks for all you’re doing for the blues. I really appreciate you.

Thanks, Ol Grey Bear! Always good to see you in the comments. Off hand, check out Blind Willie Johnson and Bo Carter. They played in other tunings, but used Vestapol tuning too. Vestapol is all about the intervals among the strings (1 5 1 3 5 1) You'll find that the pitch might not be open E in these old dudes tunes. Sometimes up to F for example but you can use a capo to match them.

I see that with the Resonator, you are using "Piedmont" style picking. Thumb and one finger. I have struggled with that because I have always played modified Travis picking using all of my right fingers. My fingers resist thumb and forefinger only.

Hey Richard, it's the Ariel Posen signature Rock Slide. I really like the ball end too. I didn't use it in this lesson, but it's perfect for targeting single notes on the inside strings while avoiding the strings not being played.
