Interesting to see variability in size and shape. I'm glad to see that the large ones can be open at the bottom. I really want to try growing some for some local spice flavoring :)

So nice to see all the various spaces that you have this lovely plant. Love the caterpillar finds too!

I planted 3 'sticks' Spring 2020, but they have grown a bit here in Zone 5 Mid-MI and we're looking forward to watching them grow. I had no idea that they got large enough to be a small understory tree. We have a hillside that they will be great addition to.

Thank you for all you do for native plants.

We may have rescued them, but they ended up rescuing our small little part of this planet that used to be just ivy and pachysandra.

Thank you so much. I NOW see them as a beautiful addition to my garden. I have 11 acres and I believe they rule in about 6 of them.

I have a small yard and have been trying SO HARD to find more than one image of a spicebush that's been shaped to be more tree-like, where one might eventually be able to sit under it, you know? And then I thought to look up videos and yours is the first I clicked on and VOILA! EXACTLY what I was looking for in less than a minute. LOL.

I have one & it is very slow growing in my garden. I also had to move it a few times and think that hasnt made it too happy. I have it planted in a very moist low area under a tall norway maple. Fingers x'd it picks up some growth soon. Have had it for about 3 years and its only put on 15"

Thank you for the info! I tried to grow one last year in a pot. It died. I just bought 2 & am trying to attract the caterpillars, so I'll give them another go. 🐛🦋🌿☺️

I grew mine from seeds and have had some success getting them to grow. I always plant them in rows of three or four to guarantee berries for the birds. The ovipositing female spicebush swallowtails find spicebushes even when they are very small seedlings. I got caterpillars the first year even when the immature shrub has only a few leaves.

Awesome! I’m so happy I planted two of these but I’m worried I won’t get any berries because you need both a male and female plant but whatever the case the butterflies will love them. 😍

We find little seedlings each year scattered among the beds and replant them in other areas of the yard. We live near the Ramapo river in NJ and its floodplain has thousands of Spicebush.

I've got 2 I'm putting in today. Will have to get more because I bet I don't have a male and female which I want. Guess I won't know till next year.

How do you do construction rescues? I've always wondered when I see them demolishing whole buildings and plants!

I believe benzenes are derived from benzoin tree resins. Benzene can be a health issue. I will try to reasearch more.

Hello from Cleveland, OH. I just planted four young Spicebush (maybe 2-3ft tall) in my front yard off to side of house in lower open woodland. The deer nibbled smaller two halfway down within two days, and today awoke to remaining taller two munched almost in half! Do you think they’ll bounce back? Spraying isn’t an option as there is a caterpillar present, and I never use fencing or cages. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Oh those deer, we have a love hate relationshio, mostly hate lol. But never fear, spcebush can take it. We use Liquid Deer Fence or we would not have a garden. You should have thriving Spicebush next spring

@@SKWildflowerRescueNursery Thanks for reply. I have used a homemade egg yolk/baking powder mixture direct on plants with success, but would be afraid of harming baby caterpillars. Do the deer stop eating once a certain height or size? Thanks again!

I am confused tho is this a tree or a bush the name is misleading but it looking more like a tree also then is this an invasive bush
@SKWildflowerRescueNursery3 жыл бұрын
It can get to about 15 ft tall. This is a native and is not an invasive plant. And its a very valuable host plant for the spicebush swallowtail. The nice thing is its height is also easily controlled, keep it trimmed bush size or let it go like we do
