I like to imagine Tom Holland singing Rise Above and Boy Falls From The Sky, he can sing by the way he was in Billy Elliot. I also like to imagine the characters from Marvel’s Spider-Man 2017 singing the songs out of context. The songs are the best thing from the show.

Julie Taymor was very unfairly fired when her contributions and vision are the only part of the show that even kinda worked. The book needed work but the score, by Bono and the Edge, made the project unsalvageable. Julie Taymor was made the scapegoat because of theatre misogyny. Male directors never get called crazy for their ideas crazy ideas, they get called luminaries or they get called ahead of their time. But Julie has always been called crazy.. when Julie’s ideas are almost always better than any of her male contemporaries. Julie is made a villain in the community because the broadway community is dominated by men who hate strong female voices. The problems this show could NEVER overcome had to do with the producers and the IRREDEEMABLE score

I do agree she was treated unfairly and that there is a giant male bias in the Broadway industry. Taymor is a tremendous visual mind and so much of this material works and really shines, even when seen on low quality cam footage. But oh boy, are there some real shaky parts to the story that do some real damage to the ideas it builds up. I actually really love the angle Julie took with Arachne. A tortured artist caught between worlds, taking her vengeance, and trying to get the one person who is like her to understand her. "Love me or kill me". That's powerful. I am all about that shit. The symbolic (and possibly mythological) elements of Spider-Man are some of my favorite peices of lore for the character. Especially the "Spider-Totem" stuff that JMS wrote about that was expanded upon by Dan Slott. Arachne is right up that alley and a good idea for a final antagonist. However in this play, act 2 seems like it tries to cram so many big ideas in, but does not give any of them the focus they deserve or any room to breathe. The sinister 6(7 with Goblin? 8 if you count Arachne?) attack causing a city wide (world wide?) black-out but we never really get the full scope of the damage, Peter quitting being Spider-Man kind of just happens, Peter and Mary Jane's love plot, the city needing Spider-Man, Arachne's revenge, Arachne and Peter's love plot, the Geek Chorus getting attacked and replaced, Mary Jane getting kidnapped, Green Goblin being ressurected, the sinister six being revealed to just be Arachne's illusions, and so much more i'm forgetting. Even the best writers would have trouble juggling that many plots at once. The play desperately needed to be paired down or given a way longer run time. Especially since the first time the actors had run through the whole thing start to finish was during the first preview show. I'm surprised they got through it as well as they did. And the ending still was constantly being changed all through previews and feels so rushed that it only resolves a few of the plots that act 2 sets up. Something had to give. And according to Glen Berger's book, Julie was insistent on keeping everything in. I tend to believe Glen because his account of everything was the first one to actually give Julie's side of the story and reasons to her decisions. Effectively humanizing her, compared to the villain many rumors made her out to be. He seems to care for her as a friend. And he shoulders just as much blame (by his own admission) as Julie for how convulted this all gets. But besides that, why are the Sinister Six needed in the first place? They server almost no story purpose that couldn't have been filled by Arachne's Furies? Hell Arachne's Furies are so striking visually but are barely used. It feels wasted. Why bring back the Goblin and then barely use him, when his story was concluded at the end of act 1? Act 1 should have been Spidey taking down the Goblin with Arachne's sub plot building in the background, while Act 2 should have been all about Arachne's vengeance. All extra villains should have been regulated to cameos at best. Quickly appearing and getting beat up in a song montage showing why Spider-Man is effective in crime fighting. Having them do a fashion show, taking over the city and then just being revealed to be illusions just adds more to an already stuffed plot. Peter, MJ and Arachne should have been the only focus for Act 2. I love this play, I love the ambition and and desire to give Spider-Man mythological status, I love the score by Bono and Edge. But it could have really used a re-write to cut out a lot of extra weight.
