I even agree to a certain extent. Here's what I mean by that... if Uncle Ben were introduced to us prior, we could see Peter's actions more as a reflection of himself. However, because we are never introduced to him, his actions can be interpreted in many different ways. For example, Captain America, Iron Man, and so many other heroes put themselves at risk to save the day as well, but that of course doesn't make them Spider-Man. Instead of a young kid on somewhat of a morbid crusade, driven by the tragedy of his past mistakes-- Peter in Homecoming often just comes off as a teen who's dream is to become a real superhero. Just a happy-go-lucky kid (as Holland described him), who wants to do the right thing, and earn his spot on the Avengers. I don't feel right calling slacking on school a heroic conflict to do the right thing, because the movie made it very clear he WANTS to be a hero over doing well in acedemics. He's sees school as a liability. Almost everything he does in Homecoming is driven by this motivation. When Peter chooses to stop the Vulture, the movie very clearly shows us that Peter's mindset is "I have to stop the Vulture so I can prove myself as a real hero, and worthy of being an Avenger" instead of "I have to stop the Vulture because if he hurts anyone I'll be responsible for that, just like I was responsible for Uncle Ben's death." Again, I'm not saying that it's NOT the latter, but rather the latter isn't well established over the first mindset, so it sparks confusion. Peter in the comics is constantly reminding himself of what happened to Uncle Ben. Every success, every failure-- it all points back to him in Peter's mind. That's where affirmation vs. establishment comes into play. His presence is subtlety affirmed, but not well established, which causes a lack in weight. Which is why so many Spider-Man fans, and even big time film critics realized this. All we have ever been introduced to is Tony Stark morals and themes, which is why it's so easy for it to overshadow everything else. Regardless of your stance on the matter, this is why so many people complain about him being Iron Man Jr. Anyways, sorry for the essay.
