Here I explore all of the elements that go into making a satisfying and impactful climax with this breakdown of the climactic moment from Spider-Man (2002).

This is an excellent video! You are spot on on everything. Another thing I would like to bring up that makes the climax so great is the symbolism, and foreshadowing leading up to it. When you think about it, what is the main theme of the first Spider-Man? It is Peter's journey into living a life of responsibility, right? This main theme is split up into two core conflicts: choose to do what's right-- or give into your selfish desires. Or as Uncle Ben so eloquently put it, "These are the years when a man changes into the man he's gonna become the rest of his life-- just be careful who you change into." This is the main thing Peter struggles with throughout the film. His main desire of course is being with Mary Jane. Raimi takes this a step further and fleshes out the two core conflicts into real, living, breathing people. Those people being Uncle Ben-- and Norman Osborn. They are both portrayed as father figures with completely contrasting ideologies. Uncle Ben trying to get Peter to do the right thing... and Norman trying to get Peter to give in to his selfish desires. At the start of the film Peter leans toward the latter. He outright rejected Uncle Ben as his father in the car scene... but looked up to Norman completetely. Norman seeing him as sort of the son he never had. After Uncle Ben's death Peter stuggles with this conflict even more. On the rooftop scene, Norman tries to get Peter to join with him, because they could have everything they wanted... after all, the city didn't really care about Spider-Man anyway as far as he knew. And after the rooftop scene you see that Peter really did contemplate this. But it contrasted with what Uncle Ben told him. "Just because you can do something-- doesn't give you the right to. Remember, with great power, comes great responsibility"... and Peter ultimately rejects Norman's offer. This then leads us into the brilliance of the bridge scene. Furious that Peter rejected his offer, Norman decides to force Peter into making a choice with between his selfish desires, and his responsibility, by making him choose to save his one main desire... Mary Jane.... or a group of kids and adults trapped in a lift. Hence the poetic line, "We are who we choose to be--now choose!" But Peter cheats it. He catches both. The whole bridge is both a symbolism, and a foreshadowing of a sacrifice he'll ultimately have to make. It's a symbolism in the sense that he's torn between two sides. He still isn't quite ready to give up his desires for the responsibility he knows he has to fullfill...yet. That brings us to the final fight of the film. Norman is beating the snot out of Peter and has seemingly won. Norman then taunts Peter that he's gonna finish MJ off nice and slow. It was this moment when Peter realized that as long as he desires MJ, she'll always be in danger. Flash forward to the climax. Peter has won the fight, defeated Norman, and we are left with the two of them standing there. In a last pity attempt, Norman pleads with him. "I've been like a father to you... be a son to me now." to which Peter replies "I have a father, his name was Ben Parker." That was it. When Peter chose Ben as his father over Norman, he finally fully chose a life of responsibility over his own desires. This is elaborated on in the graveyard scene. Mary Jane opens herself up to him. She essentially gives Peter everything he wanted throughout this entire film. "All I wanted, was to tell her how much I loved her." Peter thought to himself-- but he ultimately turned her down. He finally let go of his desires in order to live a life of responsibility. You see, Raimi didn't cheat us. Peter did have to make that same sacrifice in the end-- only in a way we weren't expecting.

The other thing I love about this scene is how intimate and small in scale it is. So many superhero and action movies these days think they need the entire world at stake and half of a city getting destroyed for no reason. Here, the final battle doesn't take place in downtown streets, an exploding factory or at the top of a skyscraper, but in some old abandoned house. Spiderman and Green Goblin are completely alone, there's no one to help, nothing to distract them. The broken rotting walls look oppressive and dangerous. It makes the fight feel very tense and personal, as it's clear that only one of them will survive. Instead of filling the screen with empty eye candy, it focuses on the characters and creates a fantastic emotional moment.
@matman0000007 жыл бұрын
Amazing Spiderman 1 ended with that stupid sky beam thing that every movie does these days. Spidey isn't really that street level, at least when compared with guys like Daredevil and Punisher. The main reason these moments work so well in Raimi's movies is that he knew the characters and the meaning of the scene are what truly matters, not the spectacle. Even Doc Ock's death was isolated and was about him realizing he's become a monster. It also shows that solid cinematography, editing and acting leads to a much more exciting scene than a pointless flood of CGI. On the other hand, BvS was supposed to have its climax at the Martha scene. The two protagonists have come to an end of their fight and couldn't continue forward without a breaking point. Unfortunately, the bad writing ruins any emotional resonance the scene could've had, and then the movie continues with another 30 minutes of useless destruction because they needed more explosions.
@theavatar91917 жыл бұрын
It's freaking brilliant. Even in Spider-Man 2, which has world wide stakes, Raimi finds a way to make the climax about character choices, and intimate moments.

You know. When Osborn realized he messed up, it's like Raimi summed up the villain's entire mental conversation of failure in just a half a second. Here's what I mean. Osborn in real time - "Oh." Osborn in his head - "Oops. That was clearly the wrong thing to do. I just gave away that I had a trick up my sleeve by saying "God speed Spider-Man" right in front of Peter's face. I also should have remembered that he has some pretty impressive powers, and it shouldn't have exactly been entirely unbelievable that he could potentially dodge my glider with acrobatic precision. But clearly my biggest mistake was that even if he didn't perform the outstanding vertical backflip that my glider was already going to be heading in my direction anyway, and now because it's coming toward me I have absolutely no time to get out of the way. I just lost my villain hood in a few seconds, and now my ex-metaphorical son is about to see me die."

Really hoping the next Spider-man can match the quality of Sam Raimi's Spider-man films. There's just so much depth in his movies that we hardly see in block busters movies anymore.
@trovuong7 жыл бұрын
That's because Sam Raimi is a experienced director and he had more creative freedom as Director. The MCU hired some random director because they know he will follow what they want for the movie. I highly doubt the new Spider-Man movie will be as good because as usual the MCU only want to recycle the action cliches and tropes because the character itself will sell the tickets, not the creativeness of filmmakers.
@SilverShade10087 жыл бұрын
I feel mixed about Marvel's method of choosing directors. On one hand we won't get to see experienced auteurs like Sam Raimi leave their mark in the MCU because everything has to be of a similar tone or else they won't connect well with the other movies in the universe. On the other hand it gives lesser known indie directors like James Gunn, Jon Watts and Taika Waititi a chance to be heard and possible earn enough cred to fund more personal projects. However I do think Iron Man 3 is an incredibly personal mark left by Shane Black that fits in with the rest of his oeuvre.
@TheGeorgeD137 жыл бұрын
I highly doubt we'll ever see that kind of quality from the MCU until the DCEU REALLY steps up their game. The DCEU is, ironically, more likely to have a superhero film that can match that quality. Same with the X-Men films, actually. Fox is going to give an absurd amount of creative control to the directors because of the success of Deadpool and Logan. Their two most successful movies had their directors a TON of creative control. They're going to continue in that direction. WB has learned this lesson from their fuckups with BVS and SS. But the MCU? Nope. I highly doubt that until the DCEU makes Sam Raimi Spider-Man quality films, then will we get MCU films with more auteur-like creativity.

They don't understand cinema either. When years has passed, the MCU movies will feel very stale and cold whereas Raimis Spider-Man movies will have that same patina and feel of nostalgia and warmth that the old Star Wars movies has. Regardless of one likes the old Star Wars or not, no one can take away from them that they have a magic feel, so does Raimis Spider-Man movies and that's why they will transcend in time.

In the 2000's and before, being comic book accurate didn't matter. Now the fanboys only think MCU can do justice to any of their characters. MCU movies are fine, but they all fall under average. They all are the same tone-wise, and very few of the films have something meaningful to say, outside of what they are obviously trying to convey. They just feel very disingenuous, and the movies feel like they are trying to tick boxes, instead of tell a story. Other studios that use Marvel characters at least take risks. Not every X-men movie is great, but I'd take them over the 1-dimensional stuff MCU puts out.
@abrahamnovelo34137 жыл бұрын
Marvel hasn't made a Spider-Man movie. Sony holds the production rights to it, so Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man movies are all from Sony Pictures. Marvel brokered a deal to include Spider-Man in the MCU which is why we got Spider-Man: Homecoming which is really good, in my opinion. Sure, there's some stuff that might not be as good as the original Raimi films, but you can say that about any franchise. WB won't ever make another Batman franchise like Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. You can complain about what's different and how the old ones are better, but then you're losing out on the chance to appreciate new movies who are trying different things. If you don't like the new Spider-Man movies, then stick with the old ones. Old franchises and movies are constantly being rebooted or remade and sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. We just have to keep an open mind about it. If anything, you should be ashamed for being so beholden to an old incarnation of a character and expecting a studio to not try something new and/or different.

+NOVA Akuma I actually think TASM2 is a very underrated film. I found the first enjoyable enough but I loved the second. I've not read the comics. My knowledge of the character comes from the films and TV series so I couldn't really say how accurate to the source material he is (though of course there are many comic lines and the versions do differ). I think Electro was brilliant though. As opposed to a normal guy getting caught up in a science experiment gone wrong causing them to be evil, there's a heavily schizophrenic guy who got superpowers and acted as someone might in that situation. He stopped developing after he was caught and were Goblin not a part of the film, I'm sure he could have been developed further but there's still a believable (I think) and interesting development from normal guy to super villain. There is a deleted scene with his mother but I'm glad that was deleted because that went too cliche. Goblin, I think works too. He would be a plot device if he was killed off but the fact that he would've gone on to be in more films makes it acceptable to me that he comes in at the end. And that clocktower scene is so well done. I don't really see why people have a problem with Rhino. I agree he shouldn't be on any of the posters but just thinking about the film itself, a villain was needed that was big enough to bring Spider-Man back but not so big that a whole film needed to be centered around them. The score was also brilliant.
@ojwh19337 жыл бұрын
+Potato Thief Yeah, I've seen that video and think he's quite unfair on multiple points. Electro's theme is very fitting to the character. (I'm thinking of 'Electro's Suite' on the soundtrack) It starts out pleasantly(ish) but with a foreboding feeling about it and the whispering to emphasise the fact that this guy has darker voices in his head, and from there, it builds. I think it would work well without the lyrics but having it there characterises the music which I think works really well. As for the electronic bit, I like that 'Supergirl' clearly took the note with music for Livewire as that completely makes sense. Goblin's theme ('I'm Goblin') is also great. It starts out eerily and goes into a dramatic action piece not dissimilar to some music in the 'Batman Arkham' games and it helps build the tension in that clocktower scene really well. 'I'm Spider-Man' is just a great superhero theme. I hope Marvel is motivated to make a memorable main theme at least (I think asking for a memorable score as a whole is pushing it for the MCU) for the upcoming film. And 'There He Is' is a good forward-moving track.

People keep saying sam raimi’s Spider-Man wasn’t comic book accurate but in fact it was. It truly captured peter’s tragic and humorous struggles of relationships, time and money. His fans turning on him to respecting him. Him selling pictures to JJJ for money at the expense of spider-man’s reputation. His mentors and friends becoming his villains like Otto, Norman and Harry. And most importantly, he truly feels like the friendly neighborhood spider-man, sitting on rooftops of manhattan watching the streets. Homecoming and amazing Spider-Man didn’t have these complex conflicting relationships.

honestly, this climax is a huge reason why this movie is my favorite Spider-Man film, despite most people picking to. what this movie lacks in long lasting special effects and dialogue you're able to take seriously, it more then makes up for in drama, atmosphere, stakes and action beats, as well as a truly threatening villain. Spider-man 2 had all of these to a degree, but Doc Ock was sort of a repeat of the Goblin (scientist becomes crazy via mind controlling invention, has harebrained scheme and ends up killing himself), but Goblin was more of a threat to peter because he knowingly went after the people he loved before Doc ever did it and left a lot more civilian casualties. Also, this films climax is a HELL of a lot better whereas in Spider-man 2 nobody even really remembers the climax, they remember the train scene that happens before that. Also, this movie is more tightly written with no loose ends whereas in Spider-Man 2 we're never given an explanation as to why Peter loses his powers and then they suddenly come back at the right moment.
@kylemcmullan29295 жыл бұрын
The power thing is a call back to when Doc mentions that keeping emotions bottled up can have bad effects so Peter bottling up his emotions about MJ causes him to lose his powers

Great video. I always loved how the first Raimi film was a better, more subtle translation to film of the Death of Gwen Stacy than The Amazing Spider-Man ... while also throwing in fresh elements to keep those fans who would recognize the visual references on display in suspense.

I'm am a photographer and video director and this movie is actually one o the best directed films I've ever seen. and yes. I love all 3. How harry sacrifices himself to save his friend in the end. There are so many meaningful moments in Spider-Man, even when the acting falls a little off at times.

Never thought I'd be able to like Raimi's two Spiderman films more than I already did. However, thanks to your two videos on them, they're borderline perfect for me (I'll forgive the claymation CG in the first one). They are both so full of energy, cinematic vigor and style that they are, and most likely will forever be, the couple of beaming lights in Marvel's pantheon of copy and paste superhero films. Sir, to you I say Bravo. Your essays are pristine and only get better with each iteration. Hope to see more of your stuff on a regular basis.

Damn! I never noticed how when Peter said ''I have a father. His name was Ben Parker'' it was a recall to that moment earlier in the movie whe he told Uncle Ben that he was not his father. Damn, such a great film. That is what MCU don't understand. They think they can make a good movie only with action sequences, cringy jokes and some comic references.

@nicholaslong48197 жыл бұрын
I'm always bummed when looking back at the Raimi spider-man movies because people seem to be rapidly forgetting them in favor of newer (read: more boring) versions of the films. Just a random thought, but my favorite moment in just about any super hero movie is when Aunt May is saying her prayers before bed and the Goblin bursts through the window right as she's at the end of the our father "and deliver us..." He then makes her scream the end of the prayer, "FROM EVIL!!!!" Such a phenomenal moment.

I'm glad to see people still like Spiderman 1 and 2 because so many people shit on them for no reason.
@smackerlacker87087 жыл бұрын
The scene is so memorable, so perfectly crafted, so devoid of fluff or filler, that I immediately noticed that the "Oh." was missing from the cut, despite not having seen the film in quite a while. Without it, the whole thing breaks down. Such a little thing, yet so important. This describes perfectly the way that many technically flawless films can still be forgettable.
@suli5427 жыл бұрын
To me the 'Oh' moment was really what made it memorable. I still quote it to this day. Same for whenever someone or even myself says "Listen to me now!" I was think that Dock Ock scene at the end of Spiderman 2.

Another thing I like about the "oh" is that it captures the audience's mind after seeing that whole part play out. The tension builds up, then stops for a joke, so the audience is laughing, and then they realize what actually happened. That he actually got impaled.

It's amazing how you played with our memory by outlining the scene, and then telling us afterward, "Nope, I lied, there's more." I watched this movie as a kid when it came out, and probably at least 50 times more on DVD (I was an obsessive kid lol). Yet, I didn't question your first outline of the scene, probably due to not having watched this for years and years now, but also because as this is a video essay, you have the source material, you've analyzed it, and you are obviously the authority on this scene for the duration of the video. And that worked amazingly in your favor after the reveal, and really helped drive home the point you were trying to make. That makes this a very strong analysis video, and I applaud you for that! Good work, I love all of your content! :)

God what a great scene. The Raimi films are truly untouchable
@Adorni7 жыл бұрын
This scene (and for that matter this review, now) has always sold me on the idea that Raimi "gets" Spiderman. Spiderman's always been a very "tonal' comic; switching from funny, to angry, to dramatic, to sad. More so than any other comic I can think of, and only a director like Raimi can pull that kind of tone-juggling off without it coming across as being too hokey. Also, kind of funny how both "Spiderman" and "Amazing Spiderman" end with someone very relevant to Peter's life dying in front of him, with their last wishes specifically being "don't involve my kid with any of this," and Raimi's Peter upholds this promise, to the detriment of his relationship with Harry, while Webb's just says "Eh, screw it, she's hot." *golf clap*

I'm glad you highlighted the contrast of tones being used to emphasize the next shot. I see people criticize humor ever being present as if it stops a movie dead in its tracks and ruins it too often nowdays. "Tonal confusion" in general gets thrown around too much as a term too. Raimi's style of film is excellent because life itself is not a monotone thing. Comedy, sense of danger, somber moments, a thrilling action sequence- these aren't always separate occurrences. Sometimes a mix of emotions is present. Other times there's a sequence of these events, but life is not one mood. It's dynamic. That, to me, captures a more authentic realism than showing nothing aside from grittiness and cynicism and calling that realistic.
