We’re taking you on a web-filled journey and going over all the Spider-Man scenes you thought were scripted but are totally improvised. Fair warning - there’s a lot.
Tom Holland has been swinging around the Marvel Cinematic Universe since his first appearance in Captain America: Civil War. Since then he’s reprised his role in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. It’s safe to say he’s one of the best friendly neighborhood Spider-Man’s we’ve seen in action. Sorry, Tobey Maguire.
Tom Holland didn’t just bring his spidey sense to the role of Peter Parker though. You’ll soon find out that his improving skills are really what makes his character and movies come to life. However, these unscripted moments wouldn’t have been possible without the teamwork from other actors like Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, and Robert Downey Jr.
We can’t wait to see what this cast brings us in Spider-Man 3.

I honestly think the beauty of the "I don't wanna go. I don't wanna go" scene is that IT REALLY IS SOMETHING A KID WOULD SAY WHEN THEY ARE "DYING". I think it really shows that despite all his amazing capabilties, Peter was still just a kid, and was terrified. Also Tom Holland played it so convincingly that I cry every time I see that scene.

It sorta seems out of character for Fury, but as we learned, it's not Fury. In fact, Maria Hill called him Nick at the beginning of the movie, when we know everybody that knows him calls him Fury.

I think something people don’t seem to realise is that “improvised” doesn’t mean they just do one take and move on to the next scene. If a line is improvised in a take and it goes over well, but maybe the lighting wasn’t perfect or the response to the improv from the other actor wasn’t perfect, they’ll film the scene again with the improvised line added.

@@joel3399 I would say it’s still ‘improvised’, because the actor still comes up with it on the day instead of the writers in the writers’ room, but yeah they usually have to film it multiple times because of the nature of the project. So, Iron Man being ‘fully improvised’ actually means they went on set without a script each day, improvised the scene a bit and wrote down what they wanted to say, and then showed that to Marvel for clearance before they could even shoot. Some other projects, like sitcoms for example have fully improvised moments. Like one of my favs Parks and Recreation - many of those classic Chris Pratt lines, what you’re seeing on camera is genuinely the first time it was said. And each time the director says, “action”, Chris Pratt would have a different line up his sleeve to try. Or a different physical action. Although, sometimes an actor could come up with these ideas while doing work on the script so they know what they’re going to say before the shoot date. And depending on the director, they might have the green light to just add random lines in during takes, or they might have to ask for specific permission to add the line in. But of course, both Marvel movies and sitcoms have moments of ‘fake’ improvisation and moments of real improv. Don’t know why I wrote so much lmao hopefully someone gets a kick out of it.

I agree. It's one of the things I've liked about the ultimate universe and the cartoons that went with it. I may have bought the deal with Mephisto in 616 if she was younger. Wouldn't have liked it, but would've bought it better.

Zendaya is great at improv, too. According to Andrew Garfield, it was Zendaya's idea to throw bread at his Peter Parker to test his Peter "tingle," instead of grabbing a knife or a candlestick (something hard and dangerous) that the script called for. Andrew stated that Zendaya also made the scene he saves her in richer by gently asking if He was ok, after he asks her the same question.

Iron Man 1 barley had a script, many of his lines were improvised. If you look at some of RDJ's interveiws etc you can see how much of himself he put into Tony Stark.

1:15 actually in the interview she showed, he (Tom) explained that to make himself emotional, he usually says a phrase over and over again. So he just decided to say it out loud to make it even more emotional and then the directors used that and put it in the script. So it wasn’t so much as a one time thing, Tom more said it and then the shots taken after that were updated.

I think there are many people (myself included) who have never really read the comics and don't know much about them. It might be my relatively low age, but i love the movies and am not that interested in superhero comics. So for me everything is new, and thus the evil mysterio was a surprise.

One of my favourite unscripted moments is after the whole boat incident in Spider-Man Homecoming, when Tony is taking the suit from Spidey, he says Peter is fourteen and Peter corrects him, saying he's fifteen. Then Tony snaps "No this is where you zip it". It was so powerful and in character for both of them, I love it

Idk why he didn't like the "I don't wanna go" bit. To me it showed that Peter was reduced to nothing but a kid at that moment. He wasn't spiderman or a hero he was just a scared kid. And for me that was so powerful.

Honestly contemporary films today thrive over improv. It maintains the quality concept of the films story from the actors perspective. A pen to pen script doesn't always match up with the scene at the time being (I realized during my times script writing), so it's safe to say improv is a very useful skill and asset, especially for the audience.

what impressed me the most is thar Tom is british, and has to play with an american accent. He said in an interview once that sometimes his british accent slips in by accident. so him improvising while playing a different accent makes it even more impressive to me
