Except that is not how Octavius was in SM2. The tentacles spoke with him and convinced him. He himself was consciously thinking that was justified after they told him what had priority but that is the point: He was still having his conscious thoughts. They just convinced him. Here it looks like they mind controlled him and made him angry which he was not even in the movie. Otto in SM2 beat the tentacles because he was not literally mind controlled like a puppet but because Peter told him that what he thought was flawed and then it took him only like 20 seconds to control the arms again. Here he had to be cured instead of just be convinced of morals. And no, him losing control over them and then being talked into a different mindset is not the same as mind control. Edit: And of course there is always someone answering nonsense even though the entirety of the product speaks a different language. That is youtube at its best.

Indeed. In the comics and other versions Norman is always show already as corrupt CEO and abusive father, with most of the drama coming from Peter having to fight the father of his best friend rather than Norman situation with Goblin. In the movies, while he is not saint (he does ignore Harry and show favoritism to Peter more than his own son), he is not a monster like Goblin, who represents his inner anger and fear of failure and lost.

In excellent storytelling, the villain is never just evil or corrupt for no reason. They view themselves as righteous and the hero of their story. No one is born a villain. They become one due to circumstances in their life up to that point. By humanizing the villains in the MCU, the writers added depth to those characters. This film was a terrific addition to the MCU.

Sure, it's possible to have villain who are just bastard but that doesn't mean they can have interesting backstory to explain where that evil comes from nor a motivation that people can understant and even connect to something we relate to, because characters, like any form of art, comes from real place and is by understanting this places it creates the connection between the characters and the public, making them interest in see where the story goes next.

When he said to Peter in Spiderman that they are not so different, he was not totally wrong, since they are both men who were bullied and betrayed by society (peter was victim of bully and Norman was fired by his company board). The difference is that Peter is humble and, when things go bad to his life, he just adapts himself to the situation, while is scared from failure which results in him being corrupt by Goblin and unleash his anger towards those who in his eyes ruined his life.

It was subtle, he would use we instead of I alot. And in context it makes the look on his face in his own movie at the end all the more painful.

Tobey got a second chance to cure Flint Marko instead of trying to revenge-murder him.

I love Alfred Molina as our Dr. Octopus. He is one of the most sexiest characters that I ever seen in a Spider-Man Film.🙂

Molina made a great Doc Ock. I used to like Octopus in Spectacular Spiderman animated series. He was sometimes goofy but he could be serious as well. I like characters like him because he was not evil but someone with his knowledge could easily do a of evil. I wish they would keep Molina in MCU with the others as they would be a great team. It has powerful and intelligent characters that could do a lot of good and not just as heroes.

He left the 616 universe realizing he had murdered May Parker and taken Peter's mother figure from him. Wilem Defoe didn't put a big relieved smile on Norman Osborn's face. He gave the character a great sense of guilt.

Well, probably not just screeches and squeals. The tentacles talked in Otto's mind, as shown in the novelization. They are capable of talking, expressing their emotions and acting human. Should I send the part in the novelization where Otto started re-gaining control over his mind in a comment? Cause it's some pretty interesting stuff.

@@BooBop1987 Sandman wasn't exactly evil either, since he didn't intend to kill Uncle Ben, it was an accident. And he consistently showed remorse and regret for the pain he put May & Peter through. To me, that makes him about as likable and sympathetic as Doc Ock. Particularly considering the fact that at the end of Spider-Man 3, after being defeated, Sandman just comes clean about the entire thing and even states that he's not asking Peter to forgive him, he just wanted Peter to understand the situation he was in. I honestly liked the whole thing about Sandman just being a loving father who was desperate to find a way to save his daughter.

People have to remember that Goblin & Norman are separate entities.... They were able to help these people, but be careful in real life, not everyone "just needs help" some like the goblin & the tentacles ARE bad without manipulations.

I think that's Norman. Mainly because, when Doc Ock is cured he says "Otto?" in a sympathetic and kind voice that Goblin would never do. Also, if he did change, Peter would've sensed it. I think the moment he changes is just after this scene, where Otto talks to Norman about how it feels to be rid of his darker half, to which Norman replies that it'll be "just me", but in a slightly gobliny way, that most wouldn't recognize if they didn't know (and right after that scene we get the spider sense scene, so yeah)

I always have found the way this Doc Ock is treated in the original movies and here as interesting as the comic version is a sociopath with little to no redeeming features.

Sandman is actually quite cold in the film considering his expected and somewhat supported helpful demeanour, abandoning Peter when things go haywire as the Goblin attacks, and simply wanting the box to go home as opposed to help in battle in the finale. I don't think it suits his character, as theoretically, his attitude should almost match, if not match, the kind attitude that we see in Doc Ock, albeit with a colder, more hardened slant. However, I do like that a character is colder and more selfish - Everyone being helpful would feel unrealistic and even goofily cheesy. I just don't think this suits Sandman's character.

Or, if it worked properly and didn't shatter his psyche.

​@@seiggrainhart4719the goblin serum is basically an incomplete version of the super soldier serum that made captain America. The incomplete serum basically did almost the same thing in the Raimi universe as it did in the MCU universe. It enhanced the person but also gave them a second personality that takes over. In the MCU, it's Banner/Hulk and in Raimi, it's Norman/Green Goblin.

I think whenever they were talking about "fixing" each other Goblin came out, especially when Electro had the device put on him. He comes out when Norman is threatened usually, but he could've easily been faking it. He nearly tricked Peter into getting a blade to the back in Spiderman 2002.

IMO at the start up to this point Norman was never truly In control, goblin just took the passenger seat to study his prey closely to find what's keeping Peter going too far. Goblin could've taken back over anytime but instead played the Long game

I'm choosing to believe that after they all went back to their respective universes, Tobey's Spider-man recruited Doc Ock and Norman into his own Avengers team. Doc still has his arms that he can use to help, and Norman still has his technological expertise and probably has the physical enhancements that came from his experiment, just now without the Goblin inside his head.

He is so darn lucky to be the only character of the movie who will keep his powers all the way in this film!

The movie did so much more than that with the characters. Involved all of them and added to them in ways they didn't realistically have to do. Honestly speaking, Tom is the best to balance both Peter and Spider-Man really well and also got the best character growth of all but never got the respect because Spider-Man fanbase is unfortunately dominated by people blinded by nostalgia. IMO Tobey would have been still the best if SM3 didn't come into existence. SM3 completely ruined the character for me. Andrew's SM is only good at swinging and action sequence but got the worst storyline of all including worst characterization of Spider-Man (ofcourse not his fault). But in terms of delivering performance all 3 of them are uniqely great.

Well Goblin agreed too. You could kind of see it at the start of his first film, before the arms, he was prickly to new people, but once he got to know Tobey's Peter, he Uncled him. Once again, once Tom's Peter replaced his chip and given him the ability to think for himself again, Otto spent the rest of the film trying to protect him and Tobey and Andrew. They should right a spin off comic book series of Tobey's Spiderman and Otto as a duo.

Harry sponsored Otto's work in Spider-Man 2, after Norman's death. I'd like to assume that with them being both scientists, they knew each other prior to Oscorp.

@@christianfrost8660 Since Norman survives, his timeline probably branches off into one where he’s alive, CEO of Oscorp, and never funds Otto’s research in the first place, especially knowing what he now knows. But at the point on the timeline that Otto returns to, Norman is still dead, Harry still backed the demonstration that turned him into Doc Ock, he’s still fighting Spider-Man on the waterfront, and the only way to stop the reactor is for him to drown with it. TL;DR, once he returns home, Norman Osborn could probably save Otto Octavius in his timeline, but when Otto returns, he still has the tentacles and the heroism that inspired his original sacrifice in his timeline.

@@rockerfish223 Unless they are all sent into the same timeline. Norman is intelligent enough to try to force nature to take its course and to only change something if he had to. If I were Norman. I would vanish myself and only resurface at the docks that night.

As someone with DID, I disagree that any of these villains are representations of this disorder. Maybe the shitty, movie version of the disorder, but it is in no way reflective of ACTUAL Dissociative Identity Disorder. I haven't seen enough of the Lizard one to give much of a take on that one, but to me Goblin is kind of a combination of Electro (delusions of grandeur) and Doc Ock (hallucinations/hearing voices). To be clear, I would agree that Goblin could be a system, which is the term for people who are multiple like with DID. There are ways of having multiplicity without is specifically being DID, and if we really have to insist that the Goblin is truly separate from Norman, and not just a delusion/hallucination, then I would say it falls more into that category that just straight-up DID. I'd say he falls more closely to a BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder) system rather than a DID system. Again, this is all assuming we are ignoring the inaccurate depictions usually seen in movies. While it does closely align with many of those, and it very well could be what they were trying to portray as writers, it is in no way an accurate depiction if that's how you interpret it. The "one alter is evil" trope is inaccurate and is typically considered harmful by the DID/system community; the closest most systems have to an "evil alter" would be a persecutor, and those are a threat to the system themself, not those around it. Obviously, in theory anyone is capable of being violent or whatever, but the implication that if you have DID then you have a violent alter is one that exists in far too many movies and is just an incredibly harmful narrative. TL;DR It's not DID unless you mean the shitty version that ONLY exists in movies.

My take on it is this: Even if the core message they're going for is good (balance, internal interactions, etc.) if it shows off an "evil alter" then it's a bad portrayal due to the harm it causes by spreading harmful stereotypes about the disorder. One series I am excited for, though, is Moon Knight. I've heard that one has a better portrayal, which I'm definitely hopeful about!

Not really. They could have done so much more with it. It was disappointing that the creators relied on short lived nostalgia trips to make the movie appear "great".

@@TheSCPStudio I wish they would have gone into more detail that would be great but I keep hoping they'll make more movies with these three Spider-Man that would be a really good idea to run with
