It's lowkey hilarious how Jonah presents legitimate arguments about unaccountability and then Spiderman goes "Didn't you like hire supervillains to kill me?"

I'm on Peter's side with the mask thing. We've seen in comics what happens when people find out his identity and it always ends with the people he cares about being killed. I think if that wasnt a concern Peter would absolutely give up his identity. It's never been about avoiding accountability for him, he's just trying to protect more people. Spiderman's all about saving lives and revealing his identity would only put more at risk.

@@Albatross0913 Absolutely but from Jonah's or another person's perspective the idea of a mask being being a tool used to avoid accountability is valid. Spiderman literally does answer to no one. Even when he messes up doing the right thing, there's no consequence other than the pressure he puts on himself. That being said I'm on his side haha

I like that JJ mentions that he thought he was jealous of Spider-Man, because that was his original motivation. JJ was jealous of the fact that Spider-Man used his powers only for good while Jameson himself would never use whatever power he had for anything other than personal gain. Jameson wants to tear Spider-Man down because by undermining the nobility of Spider-Man, by finding *some*thing that proves Spider-Man isn't as noble as he appears, it would make Jameson himself feel better.

I think the mask argument only really applies when you CHANGE or DISCARD masks. Peter uses the same mask over his career, maintaining the same identity, and thus never shedding the consequences of his actions even if they are only truly felt in his 'hero' persona most of the time. I also think that if Peter was truly a loner and without his friends, family and loved ones, he wouldn't hide his face, but would also probably trend neutral rather than heroic. There's also the fact that in the greater universe there are other heroes, so it kind of feels off that Jonah singles Spidey out for 'property damage' and the like, but that might just be an artifact of comics not focusing that heavily on any franchise other than their own, or one they are 'crossing over' with.
@jayb8934
@jayb8934 8 ай бұрын
I get what you're saying about the mask, but it does still protect him from consequences to some extent. There's no way to press charges against "Spider-man". He has no known legal name, no address, no citizenship. If he really wanted to he could completely disappear and continue living life like normal as Peter Parker. Most people don't have that luxury. Of course, we know that if he every really messed up and did something like kill someone, Peter would turn himself in, but JJ doesn't know that.

@@jayb8934Good points. Heroes in comics have always been iffy. And the fantasy of it, is that they often have such strength of character that they will hold themselves to very high standards regardless of the lack of oversight. Heroes celebrate personal agency and character. Because we wish that our actions to mean something in real life.
@jayb8934
@jayb8934 6 ай бұрын
@@CandleWisp That’s just it. Most traditional superhero comics like Spider-man are based on the premise of people with impeccable and often unrealistic moral standards having superpowers. If someone doesn’t know that they’re in a comic book or know Peter the way we readers do, some of JJ’s concerns aren’t unreasonable. Some series like “The Boys” and even “Watchmen” give a more realistic (though cynical) portrayal of what superheroes might actually be like. Having super powers doesn’t automatically make someone a morally perfect hero, or an insane villain. Realistically, most people would be somewhere in between, which could still be pretty dangerous without any kind of oversight or accountability.

One of my favorite fan theories for JJ's treatment of Spider-Man is that he knew it was Peter all along, and that by publicly berating and challenging him constantly pushes Peter to want to prove him wrong and do more good. That one of the motivations Peter has to be Spider-Man is to show Jonah that he is a hero that has improved the city instead of a menace just making more trouble and chaos, and if Jonah ever admitted that he was a hero, then Spider-Man would be losing one of his biggest motivations. It's easily disproven by the many times JJ has actively attempted to kill/arrest Spider-Man, but it could also be seen as a twisted, messed-up attempt to keep Spider-Man on the offensive against evil.

Imagine not getting the full truth about horrible things that happen to you, you're left without answers and the only link to them is a guy who you believe was the catalyst for all your pain. You want revenge, and it doesn't help when everyone else treats him like a hero, further fueling your anger and malice. At the end of the day, Jonah was a victim, a victim of circumstance, a victim of his own anger, Peter knew this, and did what could do to coax Jonah out of his delusions. This strip made me want to give Jonah a hug, at the end of the day, he's just a hurt soul seeking to extinguish what is causing him pain, he has no malice or evil, just depression and agony.

@@Greenhawk4 While I agree that the whole "no kill" thing comes off a bit too forceful (and tedious) at times, I think it depends on the story, context and characters. Just having heroes kill will get just as boring as heroes who don't. The problem with the "No kill" or the "Kill" code is that a lot of the times the characters don't get to learn from mistakes, mess up and develop. as characters. Even outside the superhero genre this gets stupid too. Marvel and DC are mainly happy with keeping heroes to a "no kill" code so they can keep making more. And when someone does die, there's always a way to bring them back to life.
@mnArqal93

@@user-if8sw6vp6m Bit of a long comment. Well the biggest point of Batman is the law in Gotham is the problem as it's manipulated and corrupted, but anyway digressing. The problem with the "No kill" heroes (not just specific to superheroes) are they on extreme with a Jesus-Saviour complex where on occasions they've endangered more lives by not killing the villain. My point isn't with the law, but with protecting lives, there's a difference as you cannot always save lives by following rules. We do this in our own lives with something, we live to some form of personal values and rules, but occasionally break out of necessity for something. You've obviously exaggerated the outcome here, some heroes will only kill criminals but be non-lethal with police, etc. It's fiction, we don't always need the hero to spiral down into chaos from one kill. And as most people are familiar with films/games than comics, I think Man of Steel (spoilers ahead) was the first film that comes to mind, but what I liked was it took Superman with the "no kill" but in the end he realised there was no other way of stopping Zod so he had to make that choice. This is the approach I like more, it challenges not just the villain but the hero's struggle to make an undesirable choice/outcome. Same in Batman Begins, Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire ver).

Back then, he felt ridiculed, like Peter was mocking him behind his back all the time. Here, instead of unmasking in public, with JJ only finding out second hand, he unmasks in front of him, as a show of trust. And outside letting it slip after days of torture, he has kept this secret and been an otherwise valuable ally to Peter.

Not only because nobody trusts you and nobody wants to help you, but because the people you screw over and the people who fear you will seek to bring you down. "Whether it be better to be loved than feared or feared than loved? It may be answered that one should wish to be both, but, because it is difficult to unite them in one person, it is much safer to be feared than loved, when, of the two, either must be dispensed with. [...] Nevertheless a prince ought to inspire fear in such a way that, if he does not win love, he avoids hatred; because he can endure very well being feared whilst he is not hated." - Machiavelli Evil people who seek power specifically because it lets them get away with things while good people rarely seek power because the only reason they'd want power is to help other people. Evil people who manage to get power also tend to be good at faking not being evil so that others will give them power. Once they have it, they have no obligation to be good anymore and thus any reason to restrain themselves. This is why the quote "Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely" is completely B.S. It's thought that power is what corrupted someone who was good, but the reality is they always were evil, they were just good at putting up a front. Once they had no cause to keep up that front they dropped it and showed the world who they really were.

Both heroes have lost everything close to them on multiple occasions, yet Spiderman has not a single problem with taking responsibility and accountability for the lives he may have destroyed involuntarily; Bats straight up eats popcorn watching his friends and loved ones get murdered by the the same individuals he swore to put away, and then comes up with some bullshit excuses about his flawed views of justice. plus JJ wasn't opening his mind much as often institution / society is the problem.. like people who say "get better by helping your society" - if your society is rotten then helping it just makes you part of the problem, sometimes to change things for the better you have to go against the norms.. I think deep down JJ knows this but he's too scared to admit it, even to himself, because of his past.. he wishes he had fought back against the "coward in a mask" but his wife asked him not to, this caught him in an unfair loop where he felt bound to his promise to her, especially after her death.. unaware that there's a difference between letting go of hate (so he doesn't become the new Punisher) and doing the right thing even if society may not be on your side on said matters.

What i love about this is how JJ presents some valid arguements too. He's not just the obsessed cretin but has some valid comments on the matter. Like everyone needs to be accpuntable for their actions and although Peter is right, that the mask is protecting others too, JJ has a point that if something goes wrong no one knows who Spider Man really is and no one knows who messed up and that is to say that if Spider Man decided to change his life and be a villain instead of a protector no one would be able to seek him out to stop him. I do love it how both sides have valid points. Because Peter of course is right too that all those threats created out of JJ's hatred did more harm than good. I also love it how both sides use both logic and emotion to bring out their points and how essentially that was the core of their reason; both their mindsets and their emotional teaumas. Of course i loved it how it escalated emotionally to the point of both hurting each other and then both trusting each other at that point leaving it hanging for a while and how they are indeed family. Basically Peter shows him that he is not with nothing. That he has still some family left and i think that cut deeper than just revealing that Peter Parker is Spider Man. Gosh i miss this type of Spider Man stories! When you really think about it JJ is Spiderman's joker. His life obsession is Spiderman, his whole purpose is Spiderman and making him miserable just like joker does with batman. JJ is just a more sane version with all the same obsessions

You made this out to be absolutely enthralling to say the least. I FELT every second of that harder than I did when I first read this. Your voice acting was amazingly spot on and made it so much deeper than I ever thought it could be. If this is what I have to look forward to from your channel count me as a subscriber just from this short video alone, and I don't subscribe to many people, and if I do I'm usually not subscribed for long once I see a dip in the quality and effort put into their content but I have a feeling that wont be the case for yours, at least I hope not. That was an incredible show of talent that you have for this kind of thing. Looking forward to watching more of your stuff. I'd honestly start a binge on it all might now but I worked a 12 hour shift last night and got home about half an hour ago and need to sleep desperately but I'm off tonight so I'm sure gunna binge your channel once I get done the things I have to do later on today and I'll probably watch your content until bed time to ight lol Great work again my friend, looking forward to it all! Edit: after looking at your videos and seeing that your a f resh face to the tube of you, I realize it won't take me all that long, but that just means your qmcinrenr has been of this high quality from the start And I'll get to watch as it only gets better from here on out, that's exciting!

On top of this being a solid comic, I like how Marvel has stuck to its guns since then and hasn’t somehow undone Jonah knowing Parker is Spiderman. Now their relationship is more like frenemies where Jonah actually wants to be helpful but, being who he is, messes things up.

I've always like the stark contrast in relationship between Spider-Man and JJ vs Batman and Gordan. Throughout the years, either ever knew the other's identity, but Gordan accepted and worked with Batman in order to solve cases that were beyond his abilities. Meanwhile, JJ uses his journalism to constantly slander Spider-Man, all because of a misplaced hate from long ago even though doing so would never change anything
