The Spider Plant, or Chlorophytum Comosum, is an extremely popular houseplant, and for good reason. It's gorgeous, easy to care for, and spider plant babies sprout from it non-stop, making it easy to propagate.
Along with learning how to water spider plants (it's a bit different than most houseplants), you'll learn how to grow spider plants from A to Z. We'll talk about different varieties of the spider plant you can get as well:
- Chlorophytum Comosum 'Variegatum'
- Chlorophytum Comosum 'Reverse Variegatum'
- Chlorophytum Laxum 'Zebra'
- Hawaiian Spider Plant

In Finland we sometimes call this plant "isännän harha-askel" which loosely translates "wandering footsteps of the master/head of the household". That of course referres to the multiple little babies here there everywhere... 😉

Epic Gardening cheapest method to treat aphids (unless have a few black/red ladybirds/bugs to hand) with 1 part distilled vinegar 2 part water. I use a 100ml atomizer spray. First cover the soil around the potted plant with aluminium foil (aphid sunight annihilation) to protect soil and then spray. Aphids vomit and die. Maybe give it a try on a plant your not attached to. This I haven't tried... I've heard the YELLOW (aphid love) banana peel around infected plant

Great video! Spider plants are sensitive to fluoride and chlorine present in most tap water. You should let your tap water sit for 24 hours to allow these elements to evaporate before watering your spider plant. since i have started this practice my plant is much greener, growing like crazy, have probably 30 or more pups and no more brown tips!

Made such a difference in my plants Also spider plants like to be in a crowded pot. the more crowded, the more pups they produce. My plant makes so many babies, we call them tribbles, after the star trek series. The babies have actually sent out shoots , so the plant has three different levels! Crazy!

Hmmm? Well just make sure you are not overwatering. I put an alarm on my phone for house plant watering days. And by a waer meter. I was so surprised when I got one and discovered I had several plants that I was actually over watering. Try the dechlorinated water for at least 3 watering cycles. You might also try a product called super thrive, which is like a vitamin booster. It is different from a plant fertilizer which you don't want to give a sick plant. Good luck Alejandro!

Ha ! Ha ! Ha!! I take it your Chlorophytum was hanging up in a partly shaded position at the time? Ideal real estate for little Birds planning to raise a family. And they couldn't have been spooked either despite their newly choosen home being very prone to regularly getting flooded out. You then, have to be a Gardener who's gentle and steady with your watering/feeding regime. These plants are so tolerant and so very forgiving of neglect and, being relatively commonplace, that folks easily become blase about them and take them for granted but, as I've discovered, if Chlorophytum comosum 'Variegatum' is given the type of light it prefers, good watering during the growing season, (never kept wet though) potting on and feeding then they respond highly and indeed grow to a surprisingly huge size. My little plant which now is very very large - in addition to the above care - receives once in the Springtime then again in Midsummer a heaped tablespoon of volcanic rock dust and together at the same time a heaped tablespoon of worm castings. (I just began with a sprinkle when it was little) Now like your's my Spider Plant is gigantic with thick fleshy robust leaves and runners. People when they first see it go, "wow ! That plant's absolutely awsome, what is it?" When I tell them they reply "whaat ?!? Is it.. it must be.. a new type? Where did you manage to get one of those ??"

Just a tiny tip: You don't have to remove leaves if they are still green. Of course they contribute to the plants energy production. What you may cut though if you want are the leaves that are slowly becoming yellow. Transport-damaged leaves still continue to photosynthesize , they just don't look so pleasing to the eye. It's like you're chopping off your thumb because it looks weird. It still fulfills its purpose. I hope you get my point. 😅

During the winter months, I put my spider plants under a 35W grow light and turn it on for at least 16 hours of the day. The light stays about a foot above the plants. You can grow a single pup to a full 2-3' round within 6 months. In 4 months time, a pup can grow from a 3" pot to an 8" pot easily. They also enjoy tightly packed soil when you do transplant. When I water mine, I use a spigot so I can get past the leaves. I keep the humidity for the growing area in the winter to at least 22-38%. The temps are good between 68-93, just be sure to water more on the hotter days. The best option to water them is using RO (Reverse Osmosis). I usually give them a little plant food once a month.

I've always thought of spider plants and hanging baskets as being almost synonymous with each other. But last year I decided to plant one of my older and bigger spider plants in a about three and a half to four foot tall concrete garden planter. Not only is the display of her babies hanging down the side of the planter striking and dramatic it has also made propagating a cinch. Just set a pot of moistened soil on the ground under where the pups are hanging then when they establish just cut them off from the mother

Once I take my pups off the mother plant, I put them in water to get the roots to grow a little longer and stronger. And then I add soil to the water a little bit more every two days. So it's actually sitting in a mud slurry. I found that this way actually eliminates the shock of spider plant usually goes into when it's transplanted straight into soil!!!

Yayyy! This makes me feel so much better 😂 I thought I did something wrong with the spider plant I inherited from my mom when she moved years ago. She kept it just barely alive but it was a fighter and I’m sure it’s glad it didn’t give up as now it’s doing quite well (southwest light and self-watering pot that I’ve gotten accustomed to knowing its “water weight”) and has lots of tendrils and babies. But when I repotted it about a month ago I almost had a heart attack 🤣 I’ve never had one so I’ve never seen roots like that even when I first repotted it upon inheritance. I did just pot a baby that had started showing its own collection of healthy lil roots so fingers crossed!

I’m guessing it may be the additives (such as fluoride) that evaporate in about 24 hours. Just my opinion with no experimentations on my part, I’m just suggesting that perhaps the coffee has nothing to do with it... it’s just better water because the additives have evaporated off by the time you use it. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I don’t know, but I’d use the city water & let that sit for 24 hours. Best Regards & happy growing! 😁

Awesome video bro. Glad i found this channel. Spider plants and pothos are my go to plants. Easy care, both can be wacked down like grass and will come back. They're good for purifying air. You can continuously propagate more plants, like you said. My spider plant is 10 years old from a pup on my mom's plant, who knows how old it is.

These plants almost grow wild where I live in Australia. Indoors or outdoors. Just give them enough light and water. I discovered this watering trick when I had to be away from home for a few a few weeks and could not water them, so I took a risk and left my spider plant in a saucer full of water, knowing one should never do this to most plants. Much to my surprise, when I returned my spider plant looked better than when I had left it. I concluded it must love this, since it was thriving so well. But I have seen them thrive even baking in fierce Aussie summer sun, lushing all over place producing heaps of baby spider plants. But, I noticed they do mot do as well in colder regions like Melbourne unless in a warm sunny indoor environment.

CC hallucinatory for cats... that's a myth. Spider plants are even recommended as a replacement for cat grass on many a cat site. I gave my cat a couple of spider plants and it's nothing like catnip at all. He still has cat grass and gnaws on either just the same. So do your cat a favor and give it a spider plant. Mine prefers vittatum over ocean. :P

It takes longer, but I’m finding bottom watering to work best on a consistent basis. Also, some prefer to dry somewhat and then bottom water.

Hi - love your videos so much! I know it's two years since you made this, but I do have a question: I have a couple of awesome spider plants and they throw pups all the time. Last time I propagated (I do water propagation until the roots grow a bit, then plant into soil), I made something like 12 plants, gave many of those away, and out of those, only one survived! Is there a good length of time you would recommend to wait and make sure the plants are "good to go"? Also, one hot tip to share: the healthiest of my spiders lives in a hanging basket with a plastic liner, so when the water runs out, it's kind of caught there between waterings, and the plant loves it. This is the one that constantly makes pups. TIA!

That looks like a hybrid. Mine grow in the ground in sandy soil (florida) and tolerate the driest garden I have. Morning sun and survives 20° for short periods. A very tough plant.

So glad I found you! I was worried about my spider plant. It was doing well, but then after the smoke from forest fires for a week, blocking out the sun and even leaking into our house, it started to yellow and brown at the tips, some leaves really limp and yellow. I watered it with fertilizer thinking it would get it through, but then it yellowed and browned. :( I hope it pulls through!

Most water municipalities changed a long time ago from chlorine to chloramines. Chloramines do not dissipate from the water, so getting a dechlorinator like Seachem Prime (2 drops per gallon of water. Dechlorinates on contact) is an option. You can pick that up at any aquarium store.
