if you are still "young" on guitar there's no shame in feeling "challenged" by this exercise in 16th notes, but if you apply and take care about hand posture, rhytm and clean sound you'll get there, even further, in no time, it's really not a hard goal

@@Gentamoru For this version of the spider(ish) walk I would definitely agree. For the "normal" spider-walk technique it's impossible to do it in reverse. I also am confused how this really helps even beginners, because I always learned the whole purpose of the spider-walk practice is to get your hand more accustomed to being able to I guess fly through the fret board, and do it cleanly. I thought the whole purpose of this exercise was to not move your fingers until whatever finger's specific note, so all four fingers are on their respective frets the entire time, and only move to the next string on that specific fingers "turn" on said string.

@@brandoncooke6564 this is how I see any guitar exercise. Can you do it? If the answer is yes. Great, move on with your life. If the answer is no, then do it until you can. Worst case scenario: you have only learned how to play the exercise. Best case scenario: it helps in other areas too.

Holy Crap man. I thought I was at least HALF decent until I saw this lol. Really threw me into perspective on the many things I was doing wrong. I did great in the beginning until I realized that my hand wasn't staying stationary on the strings, so I fixed that. then you started tossing eight notes in there, and my alternative picking started goofing me, and the 16th notes were the nail in the coffin. I really appreciate the video!

Do the same exercise but don’t lift your finger off the string until it is required to play a note. Harder ascending than descending. Really helped me with my “flying fingers”.

I do this daily and I fkn hate it. Not lifting the fingers hurt as fuck and that pinky is almost always in the way or bending strings. Either way it hurts lol but Ill keep on doing it. Maybe one day itll pay off
@le_th_
@le_th_ 7 ай бұрын
@@tunod- If it's hurting, it is NOT good for your hands and could leave you with inflammation wherever it is hurting and do far more harm in the long run. Do NOT believe these fools who talk about "no pain, no gain" because I grew up an athlete and when you've many different types of coaches, physical therapists, and even vocational therapists (often the most knowledgable on how NOT to do long term damage to your body), they will tell you that if something is hurting *while* you're doing it, STOP IMMEDIATELY, as you're doing possible long term, irreparable damage to that area. I feel like a moron stating this but pain is your body's way of telling you to STOP. It is meant to deter you from harming yourself so that you can no longer protect yourself (meaning you wouldn't survive long trying to escape a predator). This is so basic I can't even believe I'm typing it, but since it seems some people have never had actual coaching, training, physical therapy, and vocational therapy I'm stating it here so others won't be harmed. (and yes, sociopaths love to HURT OTHERS so don't believe everything you see posted as if it's the blind truth) Here is what IS normative. To be sore the next day. That means you exercised your muscles/tendons/joints in enough of a way that is making them rebuild stronger. You build that up over time. Think of a baby learning to walk. It doesn't happen all at once, they wiggle and wobble around and hold onto things until they build up enough muscle and many days of practice over time (and yeah, learning to roll over and crawl is part of that process...it takes almost a year to get there as those muscles develop, it doesn't happen from their parents forcing them to try again to the point of pain and tears). Do not take my word on this. Consult a vocational therapist who treats professionals who HAVE harmed themselves from overstrain (or from an accident from which they're recovering) and they will help you with how to NOT do irreparable, long term damage to yourself. Even vocalists have to do this or they blow out their vocal chords and get nodes on them and have to have surgery. If you want to end up an old person with stiff, painful hands where you can barely play at all, keep on doing what you're doing. You can just wear hoodies, sweat pants, and slip on shoes for the rest of your life when you can no longer button your shirts, jeans, and tie shoelaces. PROTECT YOUR HANDS, wrists, and all the joints and tendons in them. Heck, some pros won't even shake hands with people because some agro guys give the death grip when they shake hands and hurt their fingers.

15 minutes, I only do this excercise once a day, then I practice whatever else I’m working on. It’s a great warm up. Just practice along with the video once a day. Its VERY frustrating at first, you have to be able to stick with it. It’s 15 minutes out of your day. Even if you don’t practice anything else, if this is all you do one day when you are feeling lazy, you’ll accomplish a lot. Even if you go day’s without doing it, go back, it’s a quick exercise and if you really want to improve on every aspect, and you want to be a good guitar player this routine gives you A LOT! Get a good 7 hours of sleep every night. Your mind works on improving your playing while you sleep.

I know this stuff but I still watch & listen because as a teacher it helped me to teach others same w/Mike he will have a new way of seeing an old thing that causes me to be inspired to go w/that lil nugget & make a exercise or song idea from something very simple. I've spent a lot of money on VHS tapes books DVD's magz…learning guitar when I was younger & what Mike gives out for free blows most of that stuff away. It's always good to go back over the basics. I'd pay for his course he's the real deal excellent teacher he's gifted to teach.

I'm sure the vision of what guitar playing means to you has morphed since the first ever time you did the spider routine to the most recent, but your candor and calm demeanor at once transmit the underlying framework of perseverance and discipline, while highlighting how along the way you have been able to find joy -- even if it has come in unexpected ways. I've been doing this everyday for a few days. For those struggling with the 16th notes, the picking hand is what you've gotta train. Do the 16th notes with 4 notes per fret, but even before doing that, start with just getting the picking rhythm correct on a muted string. Make sure you use a metronome if you're not watching the video, you won't get the picking evenly spaced without it. Even if you cannot do it at 90BPM-- DO NOT taper down to lower BPM and then build up. I tried it and It just didn't work for me, as it didn't get me used to picking quickly. I know the standard advice is play slowly and build up, but for picking this fast you gotta throw yourself in the ocean. You actually just have to train your brain to listen and subdivide that quickly. Relax into it mentally and physically, if you tense up mentally you'll not be able to enter into the mental "flow state" you need. Also, Watch a video on speed picking, make sure your picking technique is as efficient as possible and don't take huge pick strokes. Make sure your pick has a 35-45⁰ angle and slides across the string without catching. Also, big tip, I switched to a Jazz pick from standard shaped picks and it helped immensely this as the sharper tip gives you a way better degree of control.

The best thing about this video is that Mike is demonstrating how little pressure you need to apply to the strings for them to touch the frets so as to be able to play music. A lot of beginners hold their breath and grip the strings and neck as if they're strangling a snake and after 5 minutes their fingers hurt and their arms ache and that's it for the day. Just relax your fingers and breath - as is said in this video.

Great Channel, An advanced technique of the spider exercise for all levels of expertise is only moving one finger at a time while the others are fretted down. Pretty tricky going from the 6th string down, a tester of the brain which finger is what! Hope it helps and keep up the good work :)

Bought a cheap electric guitar for a friend, he changed his mind and didn't want it anymore so I found myself with this guitar and I don't know what to do about it, days later I started to play some stuff and yeah I love its sound but it's pretty hard as a non guitar player, after searching on the internet some typical beginner exercises I found this guy who's a great teacher one of the best on YT, after 7 years as a piano player I'm feeling again that sensation of learning a new instrument that I always wanted to play, thanks Mike you're the best

If your a complete beginner this is great, not only are your training both your fretting hand and picking hand, but you are unknowingly training your ears to every 'single note on the fretboard. Minus powercords and triads ect.

WOW! This gives me hope! I played bass in a cover band many many moons ago. We were actually pretty good, always booked, made good money and had tons of fun. Now some 20 plus years after our last gig we all want to get together for a reunion gig, and if possible maybe book a gig here and there once or twice a month, mainly cause we love(d) jamming. The thing is, I have picked up and played a bass like 3 times in that 20 year hiatus. This exercise you've presented makes perfect sense as how to get the hands and fingers moving again for someone like myself. Thank you, I look forward to applying this lesson to my retraining.

Who's watching while on quarantine 2020?? ^^ Have played guitar when I was in high school but just basic strums and songs and have not played since. I've always wanted to learn more advanced guitar playing. Tried this practice with my acoustic guitar and my hands hurt and with small/short fingers I have trouble reaching the upper strings after the 5th fret. I was thinking of subscribing in his website but think this is not for those with small/short fingers like me. T.T

After you've been practicing every day for a month, your fingers will stop hurting. No one has ever regretted playing music, but they have regretted giving up.

Great warm up . Back when I started .. I had no clue what a scale or a mode was so I figured .. Learn how to walk before I dance .So I did the 1234 on the E to the 1234 to the A . just like this lesson .. but I found I was conditioning my hand and brain to go in one direction .. So then 1234 on the E , 4321 on the A ,, 1234 on the D ,, 4321 on the G etc .. then into skipping strings .. in that forward , backwards pattern . E to D then A to G .. Kept on looking for things that would hurt my head and fingers .. I have often compared it to learning to tie your shoes , then learning to tie you shoes differently the next moment .. Then eventually I had the epiphanies of what scales /modes /chords where in the mid 80's and I was conditioned to dance .. I watch these videos today because they are so helpful to those learning and getting over those times of little progress ..

I do it daily for a few month now and it has changed my play. It gives me a solid base, I don't need anymore to think about alternate picking, I play faster, and , the most important, the metronom is my new friend. I had the 30-minute guitar workout every time I can. I learn a lot of new song and my visible progress makes guitar even more enjoyable than before. I'm 47 and it's never too late to learn discipline :D Thank you Mike

I have been doing these as long as I have been playing guitar. They are very usefull. You can do also 1-2-3-4 all the way to the highest string, then one fret up, and 5-4-3-2 down to the low E string, then one fret up, and 3-4-5-6 all the way to high e string and so on.

I also do 1-2-3-4, 2-3-4-5, 3-4-5-6 on one string at a time up until the 21st fret, then back down and on all the strings. Then I do it like 4-3-2-1, 5-4-3-2, 6-5-4-3 the same way whole string, all the strings.

This video has really helped me alot. When I first tried thus the fasted run at the end was as fast as I could go and it was challenging to keep pace. Now I can play it not only with the video at 1.25x video speed but I am able to do it at 1.50x video speed, although not very cleanly yet. The difference in my top picking speed while having both hands completely in since is on its way to doubling thanks to this and the other woodshed style training videos you made. I really appreciate you and all you've done for my playing. Thank you.

Here is one of the japanese pentatonic hirajoshi scales... jguitar.com/images/scale/A-Hirajoshi.png I'd encourage you to write this down, as well as playing it. Writing it down helps in understanding the intervals and not just memorizing the shape. Even better, write it down and replace the dots with the names of the notes.

The Spider Exercise that I’ve always heard of is actually a variation of this where you plant all four fingers and only move one at a time to the next string. It is EXTREMELY DIFFICULT and quite the challenge for those willing to put in the work. It is supposed to teach you to only move the finger when needed to play the next note. Susan Grisanti has a variation on this which is designed to stop fingers from “flying away” when you play-essentially economy of motion. You may check out her Spider Exercise vid on KZfaq. Best of luck!

And the book “Pumping Nylon” has a concept called “sequential planting” where you plant three fingers (say, on the g string) and move the fourth (index, for example) to all the other strings, on its’ own fret. You can get exhaustive with this stuff.
@ElMartinoChipperman

Yes, this added another level of difficulty since you want clean licks. You can even add multiple string strikes to the exercise precision (if you don't mind wonky tones). Hey, it's exercise and warm up, not scales.

as someone who has lazily played (doodled) on guitar for about 9 years; i could barely keep up 8:12, which is great cause that means i got something specific to work on. its also important to remember to listen to each and every note, play it in your head while you play it on the guitar, it helps to get a sense for the guitar.

I don't know if this is already a thing, but i've altered this for me, quite a bit. Instead of starting with the 1. finger in the 1. fret, I start with the 1. Finger in the 12. fret and work my way down the neck and up again. This way, I try to train both hand movements. I also alter the pattern every day. I have a System that goes like this: Every day I use another Finger to start with. I take this chronologically, so 1. day 1. finger, 2. day 2. finger, ... , 4. day 4. finger. Just so I can remember where I was easier. Then I go down and up the neck in every pattern possible. There are 6 for every finger. For example if you start with the 3. Finger there are the following: 3.1.2.4., 3.1.4.2., 3.2.1.4., 3.2.4.1., 3.4.1.2. and 3.4.2.1. . So I am doing it at least 6 times a day but every time in differend patterns, playing an overall of 576 notes. And this extends, when you use the techniques of this video. My goal for, this is to train my dexterity, not only for "tapping" my finger down fast enough, to play a note clean and fluently, but to lift it fast enough to do so for notes "behind" the finger. This, for me, is especially a challenge(and therefor training) for the pinky. Also, the constant pattern change trains your brain to adapt to differend patterns and you don't start to fall into a bad habit like "rolling" the spider over the fretboard. I might imagine this, but I feel like I develope better Finger indipendence through this. And, after all, it's a lot more fun to do, than doing the old 1234 Spider every day. I think it achives more, by not consuming more time. Have fun.
