Spike Lee speaks a little too soon at the Cannes Film Festival

The French director - Julia Ducournau - has won the Palme D'Or at the Cannes Film Festival for her movie about a serial killer - Titane. She's only the second female director to win one of the film world's most prestigious awards. But the announcement didn't quite go according to plan - as the BBC's Tim Allman explains.

Ik it's bit of misunderstanding however Palme d'Or is not the first prize it's the top prize.

Well, Spike Lee is a jury of the prestigious Cannes and has been to many festivals before, he should have known that normally the 1st Prize would be at the end. Even other jurry members were shocked, which means they clearly understood that it was supposed to be the first award of the show.

@@pol4171 it's a lot going on in those festivals, they call you from left n right, give u diff instructions ect your head is in many places at once. He got thrown off by the wording, just like I did. Bad use of English language.

He was probably completely exhausted already and going on auto pilot due to having to puzzle out every sentence said to him and fill in gaps. The french speak terrible english.

Note how the woman at the podium instinctively grabbed her dress around the chest as if to cover up something that shouldn't be seen...and the blond next to him looked really pissed off before breaking into a phony circumstantial smile. Warren Beatty also messed up years ago making a blunder during the announcement of the best film for and oscar.

There are different awards in Cannes "prix du jury", "grand prix" and the final "Palme d or". The lady in pink Doria Tillier did make a confusing statement in english (since she is french and probably not really good in english) of a price which does not even exist. After you may be smart enough to know that in all these festivals, ceremonies.. all prestigious awards are given in last. So I would say, if we have to point fingers to whom fault it is, that its probably the fault of the confused english of Doria Tillier, the confused Spike Lee and also maybe people from the organization who did not clearly explained him in which order prices were given.

it's not really about the killings. It takes up a chunk of the first half of the movie but it's not the main plot by far, they're probably just describing it as that to keep it vague and interesting (it is!) - *a lot* of things happen in the movie.
