I loved Bebop's way of telling a story. We get to know each character a piece at a time, in day to day (well, their day to day?) situations, no flashbacks or manuals to understand them, no biases. It's like these things are really happening and you just watch them as they progress. I mean, there are no flashbacks in real life right? And people dont go explaining to each other what both already know just so some bystander can understand whats happening. It felt more real and more fun to me like this. Interpret the story however you like, we're not telling you who is who or what happened before...more than enough. To me, Spike just was a guy who didnt have a reason to live until he met Julia. He had nothing to lose before that and also after Julia vanishes. Just a guy surviving, not living. That made him unpredictable and fearless, because life to him was just "a bad dream" so waking up wasnt really something he was scared of. Definitely my favorite anime of all times, due to the story, the characters and the amazing, versatile and HUGE soundtrack.
@TsiahIV
@TsiahIV 7 жыл бұрын
Right and the more series I watch that orchestrates the narrative in this manner, makes me realize just how powerful it truly is. Spot on. Spike wasn't living, but merely existing, which is an overarching theme that ties the entire group together. When Radical Ed and Ein left towards the end, I just sat there in awe. "But...they're not finished growing yet. Oh no, the feels..." T_T It's fascinating really, they searched for resolve, but ultimately came out with even less than they had before. It's actually backwards to methodical storytelling, completely turns it on it's head. A pleasant gem to place in your favorites indeed, and that soundtrack was nothing short of sex on wax.

Nice description, I agree with both of you! I also learned a saying, something about: "enter a scene as close to the climax point at possible, then cut shortly after the climax occurs". In a way, if you look at each episode/session that way, they were quick and simple, straight to the point. Giving us only snippets of their lives/history. When Spike went to fight Vicious to see "if I'm alive", I think that was him clinging onto his last piece of motivation to move on in his life. He lost Julia, what more does he have to live for? His last piece of motivation, in my opinion, was simply to kill Vicious to finally set himself free (from being hunted by the syndicate/Vicious)... but then what happens afterwards? That's when we have to "carry that weight". We now carry the story of Spike and the rest of the Bebop crew, as they have been carrying the weight of each story told in each episode/session (beginning with session one, with the tragic story of the couple with illegal drugs). And now what do we do as an audience? Time to find our purpose, our motivation to live, to see if we are "alive". Anyway, in my opinion of course, sorry for the short essay :P And yes, some of the things I mentioned above are some of the same things you both mentioned, Tsiah IV and Lucifri.

I started watching beebop because I had a ton of similarities to spike and was curious about him. Same color, same hair, similar face, did martial arts, but I’m much shorter than he is and have a bulkier physique where as his is leaner and has less mass probably because Bruce lee did the same because he thought it would make his punches and kicks faster.

hmmm...I liked your vid and subbing but it's worth mentioning that it is heavily implied that the syndicate would've killed Jet and Faye if Spike kept hiding out. So my point is he didn't go face Vicious only for his sake but also for the sake of his friends.
@TsiahIV
@TsiahIV 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the sub! I would have to agree with you. They always tend to go for the people you care about the most and seeing how they both betrayed Vicious, I could see this being a plausible way of conveying the emotions he felt during that time.
@brittanyhuss4003
@brittanyhuss4003 7 жыл бұрын
Murderous Johnny I have to agree. especially considering how, along with any of us, the past was going to catch up to him. I always think the best first impression of him and that he did care, especially more than he lets on, is Episode 2. When he's chasing Hakim and Ein gets tossed out of the vehicle, Spike has to make the choice of saving the dog or getting the bounty. The irony is that later on Spike says he hates pets, women, and children. We, as the audience, know he doesn't hate them. It's just a facade. Spike's had many things taken from him: friends, relationships, anything close has been destroyed because of the syndicate. It's impacted his life and he needs to face it. I'm quite sure he's aware that anything he did in the past will catch up to him and impact the Bebop crew. He knew that by staying there, he was inviting more trouble. By finding Julia that also meant trouble, too. Great video by the way. I really love this stuff!
@Lucifri
@Lucifri 7 жыл бұрын
Brittany Huss Agreed. He was sort of not trying to let strong bonds grow between him and the other characters because he knew Vicious was still out there and his past would catch up to him at some point and he wouldn't want collateral damage to anyone he cared about. Besides, he was just surviving, not really living, kinda wanted to die even, so the less people depending on him and growing attached to him, the better, in his opinion. Episode 5 shows this side of him very clearly in my opinion. There's the whole chat with Vicious, the "flashback", but also the way he deals with the situation and with Faye. Faye asks if hes going to rescue her and he kinda tries to show he doesnt really care. And also when Faye is at gun point and he pulls the trigger on the guy. He does save her, but its also a sort of statement like "hey, Im kinda crazy and this could have gone wrong see? Dont count on me to be your hero again" And later on she treats him just like Julia did, sing the same song Julia sang to him, and he knows where this is going if he doesnt stop it right there, so he does it. These small details are beautiful in this story.
@gamerchico1
@gamerchico1 7 жыл бұрын
Also, just like to reiterate about the facade of Spike "hating pets, women, and children"... that's kinda like Spike's desire for a family. The picturesque family: wife, children, pet, and a father (Spike). In my opinion, at the end of the series, for some reasons I felt that the Bebop crew has become a sort of family -- a loosely based family that doesn't show their care/compassion on the surface level... but instead through more through actions. It's not the picture perfect family, but it's something to return to. Like in the anime "Planetes", SPOILERS SPOILERS: - - - - One of the main messages is: "...every ship needs a port that is always there waiting and that welcomes them when they finally return home, a warm, safe place ... do not forget."
@tiger-stripedcat7199
@tiger-stripedcat7199 3 жыл бұрын
He did go for their sake too. But it's interesting that he never thinks about them again after he leaves the Bebop, but thinks about Julia the whole entire time right up until the end. Just goes to show that while your friends and roommates are important, there's nothing like the love of your. As George R. R. Martin would say, "When the sun has set, no candle can replace it."

Spike probably did no really die like many people think. Proof in this is the fact that there was only one shooting star at the end of the series. Let me explain. Laughing Bull says throughout the series that when a warrior dies his star does as well. Spike and Vicious were both warriors so they should both have had a star. This means we should have seen two shooting stars instead of just one. But the fact is there was only one. This means only one of the two died. And we all know that Vicious most likely died. So Spike is most likely still alive and kicking to fight another day.
@ZeroRemorse
@ZeroRemorse 5 жыл бұрын
I believe it had to do more with Spike and Vicious being pretty much the same person. The only difference is spike broke away from his past with the Syndicate and Vicious chose to stay. Julia was what caused Spike to change and very likely their relationship is what caused vicious to change into the monster he became later on since he likely lost his reason to live when spike and Julia's affair was found out.

@leaconway2058
@leaconway2058 5 жыл бұрын
Ooh that's good to know, i think i'm with the creator on this, Spike's still kicking but it's kind of a rebirth thing coz he 'died' a second time. Personally I think it makes sense for the syndicate guys to patch him up as best they could in the aftermath of the final scene, because the next leader of the gang is whoever killed the last leader and seeing as he killed vicious, that's now Spike. I can imagine the fun of seeing Spike trying to get out of forcibly becoming the leader of the syndicate, maybe he'd try to fake his death again? Or he'd contact the guys and both faye and jet would yell 'IDIOT' at the same time before storming out of the bebop to go find him together.

One thing I really respect about Bruce lee is his humility. He understood his limits. He admitted he probably couldnt beat Muhammad Ali. I think that's something that comes through with spike in a big way. He knows hes a good fighter and can worm his way out of situations, but he also knows what his weaknesses are. He knows about his apathy and uses it to his advantage, going on to be a bounty hunter where it serves him very well. Another interesting connection

Love spike and love this analysis. I actually think he's good at heart is a part of the story. And thus his journey was partially about how he ws signoring that part of himself until he met Julia and then even when he temporarily loses her. He doesn't go back he moves to a new way. And the bounties he hunted always seemed to have legitimate reasons for being bounties. Sort of a mismatched good guy. Thus I love the Ying and yang comparison. Watanabe created such a real character that feels like a hero even though he in no way is and does kot wnat to be. Because there is this realism to him, and this inner good. And basic drive to be with the one he loves. Such a tale as old as time. And the experience of lacking motivation outside of that, makes sense. I think many people can relate that life feels sort of pointless until you find that one big thing that sparks it. For him it was Julia, when she dies, he has already died too.

Almost correct. You have to take into consideration that Spike is a young man, only 27. Can't run from his past. No motivation in the present. The only desire for the future(Julia) dies when he finally finds her. This is quite a pickle. Life is a pickle ! But you got Spike's core wrong. He is a highly intelligent, compassionate and highly intuitive/perceptive. There is no apathy !

Cool video man. I've always found Spike really interesting, Def my favorite anime character. I wish they had delved deeper into Vicious as a character he was such a badass. Love this though Spike is the man.
