Spinal cord injury affects around 250-500,000 people around the world, ever year. The term spinal cord injury refers to damage to the spinal cord resulting from trauma (e.g. a car crash) or from disease (tumours) or degeneration (wear and tear).
This spinal cord injury video is aimed and patients and the public who want to understand how why it happens, how we diagnose it, possible treatment options as well as the path to recovery.
00:00 - Introduction
00:39 - How does spinal cord injury happen?
01:27 - How do we diagnose spinal cord injury?
04:00 - Management options
04:51 - Recovery paths

I have not. But I helped an elderly man that did. I wrote it out on the applying a collar video, so I won't rehash it here in its entirety. Basically, he tripped badly, and hit the front of his head on a brick wall on the way down. He was 84, and had that brittle bone syndrome. Apart from the blood, and his breathing sounds, what I remember most is how his neck bones seemed to be grating under my fingers when he tried to move. He passed out, broke many bones (right hip, right upper leg, right ribs that punctured a lung, skull fracture, and neck cord damage.) His head was forced upwards and backwards. I did my best to help out, but he kept going in and out of consciousness. He was very cold, and bleeding profusely from the head, as well as from his mouth and nose. I stabilised his neck with my hands and his head with my wrists whilst waiting for the ambulance and keeping him awake by asking him questions. Every time he started to fade out, I pinched his ear lobe hard and called his name until he came around again. It took him a while to get better, but at his age and with the damage he took, I was just immensely greatful that he lived. I remember being shocked by how much damage he did just by tripping over a high curb, and hitting his head that way. There was so much blood, and I had only one of those little medkits you can buy from Boots. He told me later it was a close call for him, and I was not surprised. I was most worried about the head injury, his neck, his pulse was fluttery, and his breathing was really strange. Gasping, hitching and bubbly sounding. It got worse when he tried to move his head, and I was very scared that something serious had happened to his neck. That if he had broken it, and there were bones moving around in there, that he would lose the ability to breathe on his own from spinal cord damage. But because I only had my hands and voice to work with, I had to apologise to him about holding his head still and straight, and not allowing him to move around. He wanted to get up, but I could see that he had broken a lot of things, so I did not allow it. His skin was worryingly cold, I think he went into shock, so I got coats from everyone to put them on him. His skin colour was really weird too: waxy and pale, with big dark circles under his eyes that looked bluish. I had very little idea of what to do, but I kept him kind of coherent whilst talking to the 999 operator until the paramedics turned up. I actually lied and told him I was a medic, so he would listen to me and stay still. It worked, too.

I shattered my C5-C6 with a fusion repair. L1-S4 Dural tear after a herniated disk, degenerative disk disease. I have significant bruising around the cervical area which makes my life hell. I just found out that I there is no fix for my condition and that I have to wait for science to catch up. I'm 42 and worked most of my life and now having nothing to show for it. The nerve damage and the mental health is the hardest part that it seems no one ever accounts for. I'm glad he mentioned it. Good video.

Great video. Liked, and subbed. On a related note, I have a recurrent ependymoma in the pineal region of my brain. Great surgeons, and doctors such as yourself have made sure that I’m still alive to post this. I have an immeasurable amount of respect for you all. And your profession. You all have piqued my interest in A & P, as well as Neurology. In relation to therapies, physical, and occupational therapies, and therapists are godsends. They rebuilt me from square 1. Again, thank you all.

I am so blessed, I had a major trauma accident, 4 months ago. I broke my C1-C2 (unstable fracture) Hangman’s and Jefferson Fracture, but lucky enough to have no spinal cord damage. Just halo neck brace was needed.

@@Brainbook Yeah I know, I’m so lucky, the doctors were shocked when I walked into A&E then discovered the damage I had done. I had the halo brace fitted in Brighton Hospital, 11 weeks down the line they discovered the right side pin site had penetrated through the skull and went an inch into the brain. This kept me over a month in hospital to prevent a brain abscess, lucky enough no damage was caused with no symptoms. GCS didn’t move from 15 the whole time. They weren’t sure how it happened but it was really bad looking at the CT head scans. If you have an email I can drop you a email, I’m sure your team will fine it very fascinating. There are writing a report on it and posting it on the neuro pages online. But now I’m fully recovered with very minimal pain in neck and full range of movement.

I had a SCI a while back & had a few minor accidents after. All that medical stuff looks great. Too bad I don't have a doctor or insurance. I've got a stiff neck, partial feet numbness, & neurogenic bowel & bladder (no signal when to go). But no incontinece, thankfully. Tried chiro & use DMSO. Hope the nerves will heal.

I had a fall around 2007/2008 that I believe was the cause of my bulging disc which presented as tingling in both feet. Regrettably I wasn't aware why this was occurring and had brought it to the attention of my Endocrine Consultant who took bloods which showed no abnormalities. Between 2009 and 2015 I noticed a loss of balance and went to my GP, leading to a referral to Neurology and MRI scan showing a c5c6 impinging disc in 2016. A Laminectomy was done in 2020 by which time my mobility was severely impaired and require aids to walk. I live in hope 🙏.

My injury is so odd... C3. I was told i was just a veggie but i actually learned how to walk again and breath fine .. the spot where my injury is is all numb 😭. I mean you'd think it's all great until it randomly burns and you have no idea how deep you're scratching ! Bc it's all you want to do .. The other side of my neck is normal.. it's like it went in half perfectly to one numb side to normal side. Oh plus my whole one side lost muscle lol yayy. But the very odd thing is not only is my neck half feeling half not .. so is the rest of my body . My entire right side i can't feel a thing . It's scary and so hard to deal with. O i hope there's hope

I burst a disc and after an operation to stop it pressing on my spinal cord I got scar tissue form round it.. I suffer pain down both legs so had a spinal cord stimulator fitted to help manage that. I was in a trail years ago in the UK with a specialist anesthetist. My implants have lasted about 5 years then its time for a new pack. Last time I had all of the system upgraded so I can be scanned. The pains something like toothache all the time so anything to alter that is welcome. 👍👍

A bruise in the spinal cord in the neck, C5-C6 vertebra, two years ago. My condition improved after physiotherapy, vitamins and medications for a year and a half, but it decreased a lot about a month ago. What is the reason for the decline, and is the decline temporary or should I expect a more decline..?

There's not much to think. We haven’t seen any of the actual tech and dont know how they will achieve their goals... There's a huge gap between the idea and what they're trying to achieve. We've been putting microelectrodes into brains for a long time and recording from them for a shorter period of time. I just hope they have a good neurosurgeon on board to advise...
