I have conflicting emotions after watching this video. On the one hand, I feel inspired to watch someone with such fantastic talent. On the other hand, I feel like throwing my lathe away because I could never achieve this skill level. Thanks for the video. You have amazing skill and craftsmanship. You make it look so easy.

Steve,It's great to hear the man behind the skew - don't be shy, you're a natural!Obviously you need the extractor on but it does interfere with you speaking. I don't know much about the technical aspects of videoing or what equipment you are using, but I know that other KZfaqe's I watch have moved to lapel mikes because it givess clearer sound.I usually just watch again but speaking for myself, I would be quite happy to watch you do one with full commentary and another couple with none or just any extra points that occur to you. I realise that that could get in the way of your work though.Keep em coming!

Simply amazing to watch. I think if you gave me 1000 of them to turn I think you would be hard pressed to find two the same. Out of interest I know you run your lathe at about 1K for most things. Do you find any differences at sanding at that speed? Those with reversible lathes will often sand at slow speed and reverse the lathe every grit. Great job, love watching.
@woodturner21
@woodturner21 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Paul, these are approx. 1250 rpm and no problem sanding personally don't find much advantage reducing the speed, I have reverse on my lathe but very rarely use it. Even when I am sanding to very fine grits I find little difference.

After years of driving a semi truck cross country i found that i could quite easily operate the truck in any situation with basically very little thought at all. It had completely become second nature. As i watch you very quickly & expertly maneuver the skew i can only imagine that you probably make these cuts quite automatically? Do you merely tell yourself that you wish to do this or that cut & your body responds without thought? As a complete novice turner, i find making the skew do any maneuver not unlike the first attempts at backing up a 53 ft trailer lol. Painstaking....😮

Efficiency is intelligent laziness.... You sure have that part down... Interesting to me is that your skew tends to be ground more straight across than most of what I am used to seeing. Looks like maybe 10 degrees or so. It seems like a lot of people have theirs at 30 to 45 degrees. Any particular reason?
@woodturner21
@woodturner21 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, basically because I find it far more efficient and easier to remove larger amounts of wood no more than that. The angle is how my Grandad and the family have done it for hundreds of years but generally I don’t think the angle of skew is that important use what’s comfortable. Tool presentation will change that angle to whatever you want.
