@@ks1179 I usually do well at blacksmiths...I don't mind giving up the locations. You need to walk the beach and find the fish though it's not all plain sailing. Time of day for tailor is crucial. Dawn and dusk are best and if that coincides with a high tide turn even better.

I had a go today but my rods are super heavy! Older style beach rods. (Had the right lures, but the wrong rod). I am going to buy a seabass as I like daiwa, do you find the 10'6 is much heavier to hold all day? I.e. if you were targetting Tailor and could only have one rod, would you recommend the 8'6 or the 10'6 do you think? Thanks so much for all the help!

Thanks for the reply, I normally use Halco twisty or Savage gear missile lures in sardine colours and at night put a glow light about a foot in front of the lure with some success, I will try the Iron candy glow this week coming. A local tackle shop is closing down and I was able to buy some Iron candys in glow at half price they didnt hsve any other colours left😕

I use about 1M of 20lb black magic mono leader, using an FG knot between the leader and the braid. I tie the leader to the clip with a simple uni knot

Hi Daniel. Your welcome. When it comes to lures, there's so much junk for sale in the fishing stores. In the end 10- 20 lures will do the job in 90% of situations. I have spent a lot of time and money testing lures and I think the lure market has peaked, fishing stores have to face the fact that the junk doesn't sell if it doesn't catch fish. The good lures are mostly available on ebay as well...

I’ve got heaps and heaps of jerk baits and crank bait lures for chasing bream,trevs and flattys but I’m just starting on rock/beach fishing. I’m not sure on what metals work, I have already got a couple of them shimano micro jigging ones but they diddnt get much attention in the surf. I’m up at Brisbane, I think we have a similar rod, I have the Daiwa sea jigger 10’6 4-8kg . Thanks to your video I found them raider40 ones online from anglers warehouse for $7 each :) I’ve got a few Wilson ones but as you explained, they just have no action.

@@danielayris3623 thanks for the feedback. I'm planning another 3 videos, one each for hardbodies, metals and soft plastics. I will be focusing just on a top10 lure selection for each application. BTW I had the sea jigger rod before I tried the seabass, I found the sea jigger to be a bit soft/weak on the cast, it just couldn't flick anything heavier than 20g. I found it quite good for whiting in the surf though (but maybe a bit too big heavy) Also, most of the metals I have tried over the years caught nothing, I'm fortunate that I live right on the beach and can fish every day, so very easy to test stuff out if the tides are right. The maria shore jiggers (25g pink/silver) work well off the rocks for tailor as do big (6.5") gulp nemisis plastics in the nuclear chicken colour (for big flathead) Thanks for watching.

@@danielayris3623 the spanid raider is available at anaconda and tackle world as well. The savage gear sea missile is available at BCF and the iron candy is available online at tacklehq.com.au in WA. Those 3 are pretty much the top tailor lures in my box.

The store is Blue water tackle in Mindarie WA, just up the road from me, no good for you in the East. They had some 90g and 21g left but not many colours. I think I bought the last 28 and 45g. Tackle HQ is not far away I will go and have a look later next week after fishing with the ones I have. Will let you know how I go with the Iron candy lures. Cheers

Yes, either of your shimano 5000 size reels would suit the seabass rod, though I would recommend the 10ft6 seabass for a 5000 size reel. If you want a really light rig use a 4000 size shimano reel on the 8ft6 seabass. On both of these setups, I would use a main line of 10lb power pro braid on the moss green colour and 20lb mono leader with an FG knot between mono and leader.

Hi David. I only use clips. Prefer those with swivels. Fish don't really study the knot...I'm pretty sure of that. I got a box of clips off ebay for $5 - all different sizes. Don't waste your time tying knots, whenever you have a spinning session you have to change lures quite a lot sometimes before you isolate the lure that works best for the conditions on the day.

Hi Matt, Great questions. I started out with an 8ft, and a 3000 reel which didn't quite do the job, my next step was the 8ft6/3000 which was light and still strong enough for the fish I was able to reach. The 10ft6/5000 was my next step, and is definitely the boss in terms of casting distance and confidence, it has never let me down, but is a bit tiring. More recently I found the 9ft6 at Freddie's (BCF have never stocked the 9ft6), so I tried one paired to the stradic 5000. I would have to say that this is most probably going to be my favorite combo (although I haven't had much time to fish this year at all, so I still need to use it more to confirm that), but it does have more casting distance than the 8ft6 and almost the power of the 10ft6, and it's much lighter than the 10ft6. However because you have a 3000 reel, that would be better matched to the 8ft6. So in summary the 9ft6/5000 would be the way to go. I guess I need to do a video on all this. 😁

Hey there, thanks for watching. I think the swivel on the back does make a difference because tailor do like to jump and twist to try and get away and the swivel prevents the fish from effectively ripping the hook out by twisting itself. The downside is that sometimes the hook wraps around the lure body because the swivel and hook assembly is longer than just a hook and acts s bit like a tail...but this is a minor inconvenience in my opinion. This time of year is prime time for tailor, if I'm down at the beach , feel free to say hello ☺

Hi Stephen, Yes you are 100% correct, the Spanyid 40 weighs just 31g with the single hook and swivel as used in the video. I would love to know what the manufacturer says about that! Thanks for pointing this out. Would you like me to make a video where I put the lure on a scale to show what you have mentioned?

Hey Terry, thanks for asking. If you take the example of a 8 ft 6 seabass which I think is rated to 28g, using a 28g lure, 10lb braid and 20lb leader, the line should never snap. You should be able to use the rod exactly as it was designed I.E. as a catapult, the correct action would be similar to a whip, your rod will make a distinctive whipping sound when you get it just right. If you have to lob it (which is what it sounds like your describing) either the lure is too heavy or rod tip is too flexible. If line snaps when casting, that's usually dueto a wind knot or a badly spooled reel, any resistance on the line feeding out will snap 10lb line quite easily, even if the line gets fouled on the guides during the cast. Casting a lure should also never snap your rod, unless you hit something during the cast action....hope this helps and thanks for watching the videos.

Hi Adam. I haven't tried the 11 ft. I think the main things to think about are; can you cast with the setup for a prolonged period of time without getting too tired and then how does the rod cast the lure...does it flick it or do you have to lob it... The only way to know for sure would really be to test it unfortunately

Thanks for the reply. I might go for the seajigger, I think they will go on clearance soon as the new range is about to be released. The 10’6 8kg model can cast up to 60g which is quite good.

@@adamhatton7579 Just be cautious of the sea jigger, I had one of those and although its rated for a 60g lure, it was way too weak to even flick a 40g lure. I took it back to BCF and they very kindly swapped it for my first seabass....which was just right. If you have a practice flick with each in the store you will see what I mean. I think the sea jigger would be a great rod for whiting off the beach (with bait) or for flicking light diving lures off a rockwall though...

Hi Terry. The 10ft 6 seabass casts the 47g lure just fine. In fact the 8ft 6 seabass casts the 47g lure fine as well.

@@VasK2016 Thanks for your interest. I use an 8ft 6 (3-6kg) or 10ft 6 daiwa seabass rod. 10lb power pro braid with 20lb black magic leader with an FG knot between the braid and leader. The best colours for the iron candy are glow (dawn & dusk) and silver flash (sunlight). The tailor are very active on the NSW beaches right now up until april/may. Tight lines..

So long as they catch fish....that's all that matters

And...they last forever

It all depends on the weight rating of the rod. If it's designed for flicking lures with a lure weight of 20g to 40g that should be fine. Daiwa have a 12ft crossfire rod priced around $80 that can be used with the lures in the video, however, for extended periods of spinning a 8ft to 10ft rod will be less tiring than a 12ft.

Interesting 🤔 its difficult to say without observing your technique, however my best guess is youre retrieval speed, as hungry tailor chase shiny things and are incredibly easy to catch on lures. Are you sure they are tailor busting up? Are other people catching them? Where abouts are you located?

Hi. I generally don't keep any fish. I Just take a photo and put them back unless they're badly injured in which case I just put them in a plastic packet that I carry with me in a pocket and then give away to whoever wants them.

@@AlluringFishing okay thanks for the quick reply. and how do u keep u your rod and reel clean after a day on the beach?

@@shorteeayy i take a soft cloth, soak it in warm water and wipe the rod and reel down gently after each use, making sure that I clean all the salt off the guides. Then I use a daiwa reel oiler that I got from anaconda to oil all the points on the reel, like the bail arm bearings, line roller bearings and all bearings and joints on the crank arm and all the exposed screws....

Lots of places...tackle hq, anaconda, BCF, eBay, tackle world....all over really
