This video accompanies my blog post on a technique that I’m calling “Spinning into Focus”. It’s a method for spinning a commercially available multicoloured blended top, breaking it down into 7 - 9 yarns, each yarn becoming less blended and more colourful than the previous yarn.
The idea is that this method can be used to spin yarn for a sweater, scarf, or any large item using several techniques, and you will have a garment where the colours start off muddy, and appear to come into focus as they work their way up, down or across the garment.
Full disclosure - I told John Arbon Textiles about my Spinning into Focus Technique and they very kindly sent me a sweater quantity of fibre to demonstrate my method with. I haven't been compensated financially to use their fibre.
I’m going to use ‘Slack Ma Girdle’ from @JohnArbonTextile’s Appledore range for all of the yarns in this series. The blended Appledore tops can be found here - www.jarbon.com/product/appled...
The third technique is simply drafting out the multicoloured blended top and spinning it from the end.
All of the yarns in this series are chain-plied at the wheel with relatively short chains to try to maintain the original colours as much as possible.
In this video I'm spinning on the Electric Eel Wheel 6 which can be purchased at* -www.dreamingrobots.com/produc...

There are lots of ways to take it off the bobbin so I wouldn’t like to say that there’s a proper way. Sometimes I sit the bobbin on a lazy Kate and wind it onto my umbrella swift. Other times I keep it on the wheel, take off the drive band and tension band and wind it onto a skein winder straight from the wheel. If you don’t own a skein winder you could sit two chair next to each other and wind it around the backs. I don’t own a niddy noddy but some spinners prefer to wind it straight from the wheel to a niddy noddy as this can give a tidier skein that’s easier to work out the length of. Once it’s in skein form, I would tie it in 4 places (going through the yarns in a figure of 8) before I take it off my skein winder. I then soak it in hot water and a dash of shampoo to set the twist and allow the yarn to shrink slightly before hanging it to dry. Some people don’t wash their yarn if they’re going to weave with it as a little shrinkage and blooming can enhance the look of the fabric if the yarns are washed for the first time when they’ve been woven.
