@AndrewFishman
@AndrewFishman 4 жыл бұрын
The eyelets on top of a baitcaster definitely affects the playing of a big fish. You have a lot more control over the fight as the line is pulled into a curve with the rod. On a spinning reel, between each of the guides the line is pulled away from the blank so the line is hanging rather than taut. This definitely makes a big difference in the fight.
@robbiefishing
@robbiefishing 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Andrew thanks for explaining it. I knew it felt better, but niw I know why. I was kind of onto it but but didn't know how to word it. LOL
@AndrewFishman
@AndrewFishman 4 жыл бұрын
@@robbiefishing You are definitely onto it mate :) If you tie the end of the line to something and lift each rod into a fighting curve and look at the line, you will get what I mean visually. Between each eyelet on the spinning reel the line sits between the eyelets in a flat line while the blank is in the curve which pulls the blank away from the line. I often see people lose fish because as they drop the tip and these flat lines drop in tension, the fish can throw the hook or as the line pulls tight it can lead to break off. This is less common in a good BC as the line remains taut with the rod pressing up onto the line.

The rod itself is different, the rod on a typical spinning setup is more flexible and longer, the rod on a baitcaster reel tends to be shorter and less flexible. This is also probably why the baitcaster is more accurate, because you don't have to factor in the energy from a flexing rod, the more rigid structure allows the caster to sense the lure hanging at the end of the rod more directly, which allows it to be flicked more accurately. The baitcaster also has a stronger form of reel system, when the turning of the spool itself is pulling the line onto the spool, this is a strong system, the same system you see all heavy machinery use with cables and such. The system on a spinning reel is using multiple angles, and it results in a weaker system. The baitcasters also have a better gearing system because of how they work, it's possible to gear them up for a fast retrieval. Overall I would say that a baitcaster should be bought if the fish species wanting to be caught are very large, or if the location is a cramped river where you have to flick your lure and can't swing your rod. I would suggest a spinning rod for small and medium sized fish, mostly in more open rivers or lakes. Additionally a large spinning lure system with a long 7+ foot rod will enable very impressive casting distances in something like a lake, this is partly because the line falls off the reel easier, but also because the long rod with a certain amount of flex in it, enabled maximum force. Essentially in a large casting swing, if a rod is too flexible the force won't transmit into the end properly and the thing will wobbled all over the place, but if the rod isn't flexible at all then it really can't capture additional energy from the swing either, so you want a rod that is just partly flexible, it will whip right before you release the line and your lure will go out a great distance, usually the thicker 7+ foot spinner rods are of this nature. Both reel types can pretty much do the same thing, but both (along with their rod type) will excel better in a certain area. Notable a small spinning setup will enable the use of small lures, this is because again the swing in the flexible rod then whips the lure itself, you can't really do this with a baitcaster, the baitcasting rod isn't flexible enough, and with a baitcaster you are mostly using a more rigid rod to act like an elongated arm to throw the lure itself, so you are mostly using the lure's weight as the main factor of casting it, not any rod physics of flexing and whipping.

@@jindatackle The play of a big fish on a baitcaster is much more direct with the line being more in contact with the blank, You feel every head shake without the line just playing between guides :) It is like the diference between fibreglass and graphite. I dunno, BCs are just much more responsive and have more feel than the spinners. I have both, use both and prefer the baitcaster under most circumstances. Lack of drag noise is made up for by the feel of the line running out under the thumb (and the associated burn blisters the next day if not careful). robbiefishing I have a relatively big hook and usually using bait with worms, so maybe I should use lures, what are your ideas, lures or bait and I’m in the Murray mate
@AndrewFishman
@AndrewFishman 4 жыл бұрын
@@adog2706 Maybe try downsizing the hook. For worms, you do not want anything much bigger than maybe a size 2. Run a bit of a leader below a swivel or brass ring, have a running ball or bean sinker on the mainline, just heavy enough to take the bait down and hold it in the flow, not huge, and use a few worms in a bunch with lots of wriggling tails (paternoster rigs like Robbie uses and has demonstrated also work well). Target areas near the banks with holes, sand bars, rock shelves, drop offs, fallen timber or rock piles. Shaded areas through the day are best. Evening and morning best strike periods. Use about 8-10 pound mono or flouro for the leader and any line you like for the main. I use braid, but that is just a preference thing. Yabbies and shrimp are also great bait. Cheese and bread work, as does corn, but you might pick up a lot of carp between yellas.Cheese also gets cod. Lures are good for covering a lot of water, bait if you want to just cover one particular area. As far as lures go, you will get yebblies on spoons, traditional or Tassie style, soft plastics, hard bibbed plugs, minnows, spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, inline spinners (black and red celta is a fave) and bibless vibes. In short, any lure is a yebblie lure. If it catches fish, it will catch a yebblie, they are not terribly fussy. It is more about working the lure in the right zone and with the right technique to trigger consistent strikes. What I mean by this is, get in tight on the cover, and hold as tight as you can for as long as you can. Slow, and I mean just fast enough to give the lure action, retrieves, with pauses and twitches are best. If using a soft plastic, I find I get more takes on a texas rig than on a fixed jig head when it comes to yebblies. Good luck, hope this helps a bit. The best way to consistently get good yebblies is time on the water and figuring out where they are holing up through different times of the day, at different times of the year.

@@adog2706 I really hope it helps you get onto some good yellas. The Murray is where I caught my first yebblies back in '77 when on a family houseboat holiday out of Mildura. We had a great week, catching yebblies on shrimp and yabbies we got in the drop net off the end of the boat. Got some huge crays also. That week was what got me addicted to freshwater fishing, and I have been a practicing addict ever since. If it gives you an idea of how far out the fish were then, about half the length of the boat into the shore line was a good place to start. So an easy cast out from the bank. You do not find many in the main flow, unless there is a decent obstruction to break the flow, so concentrate your efforts close in. Please let us know how you go mate.

well us old people never heard of bait casters when we where kids, and we fished small creeks with the a standard spinning reel, your right a bait caster can be, but far harder to use, a lot harder. but if its all you have you be surprised how accurate we got lures into tight spots. i have owned both, i cant cast anymore accurate than a normal spinning rod and reel. cant improve perfection. we had it down pat at age 9 nothing better than seeing a redfin 2 lb rise below you standing on a vertical bank, in a small creek, and see it turn on its side and engulf an old red dicksone lure with black spots. the 1970s still like i seen it yesterday, days of freedom that is all gone now, strangled with laws on laws on laws. tons more fish around back then, never ever not caught a feed. depi has seen to the redfin decline where we fished, killed a lot of the platypuses, native fish and all, trying to be smart, and they are not. bunch of clowns running the place and i am pleased i dont work for them anymore. robbie is right in rod reel choices, mate you do good honest reviews. good to see you haven't sold your soul to big lure companies..

Buys new rod/reel. Come home and find a new video on choosing a rod. 😂 Thankfully this confirms that a spinning reel was the right pick!

Thumbs up 👍 spinning reel pro for me I can cast it and get within 40sq metres of where I want it( normally between 1/2 and 3/4 of the way up that tree over there con for bait caster I suck at casting and when I practiced I hit the Mrs car and slept in the spare room for a few days hahahahaha
