In this video we learn why your guitar pick is spinning round in your fingers when you play AND I show you what you need to do to stop it from happening!
Spinning plectrums suck. Its just as annoying when you are strumming your guitar, Playing guitar solos / alternate picking or chugging.
In this video I show you how to end the spinning pick misery for GOOD!
Big thank you to my good friend Mr Barry Homes who inspired this video!

You didn't mention it specifically but you solved my problem with demonstrating the position of the index finger. I was holding my pick like a pinch of salt when I strummed which was letting it rotate. Thank you so much for the excellent lesson!

Thanks so much. New guitar player here, only a few months. Pick rotating in my fingers when I strum is driving me absolutely bonkers. Seems like every other video out there is trying to sell me something. I figure -- people have been playing with picks like these since the '50s, I don't think the problem is that I didn't buy something in particular! Now I know what to actually do besides spent unnecessary $.

I started guitar a year ago. Had no idea this was a problem for so many. It’s annoying when it happens. It only happens when I strum, not playing melodies. This video helped. Didn’t know it was actually the impact of the strings hitting (twisting) my pic due to my wrong pic angle and grasp, but now it makes sense.

Where have you been for my last several years???? :) I have been "learning" guitar for decades.........and apparently along the way picked up some very bad habits. The last couple years I have had just a brutal time controlling my pick!! Made playing a chore! I did it all.......... bought almost every pick known to man, scored them, coated them, sanded them, taped them, etc, etc. Blamed my dry hands. Blamed my sweaty hands. NOTHING worked consistently. I came across your video and thought....... Hmmmmm.... this may make sense!!! Back to the basics!!! I have been adjusting to your methodology over the last month...... and this is the answer!!! It works!!!! WELL DONE and Thank you!!!! Now what do I do with these thousand picks I have??????? :) :) :) Thanks again!!!!

All of this involves changing the way you pick. A lot of people like the way their particular style of picking sounds and they don’t want to change it. So, just get some “no-slip” picks or use a razor blade to scratch some hash marks into the pick or one of the many other methods out there. Hell, I even cut some little squares out of a rubber party balloon one time and literally super-glued them to each side of my pick where my thumb and finger normally touch and it worked great. I can pick exactly how I like and slippage is minimal lol.

This one simple video has solved at least a month of frustration in my beginner guitar journey. Watched this, instantly understood what I was doing wrong, implemented some of the suggested changes and a bit of trial and error later, the issue is resolved. This is the first time I've ever tried tipping someone on KZfaq and this video sure as hell deserves it. Simple, to the point, and extremely effective advice (even though I still hold my pick a little differently).

Been playing 40 + year and spinning picks have has always been a problem. I tried many 'fixes' over the year - none resolving the problem. Your method seems to make a significant difference. I just stumbled upon this video yesterday, so it may be too early to conclude that this is a real fix for me. That said, this method quickly shows very promising results - no spinning at all. I've use a Dunlop Jazz III for many years. Tried other picks, but regarding picking accuracy, Jazz III works best for me. Strumming is when I usually experienced the spinning or shifting (tip of pick shifts approximately 15 degrees towards elbow). Switching to a thinner pick may be better for strumming, but I'm not willing to compromise the picking accuracy for smoother strumming. Your method is allowing me to switch between picking and strumming without the annoying shift of the pick angle. Thank You.

This has been extremely helpful for me! Thank you! I've been playing guitar for a few months now and felt like I hit a wall practicing because my picking hand couldn't keep up and I constantly had to readjust my pick. It was very frustrating. After watching your video, everything feels different. I'm re-training my muscle memory so it knows when to move my arms, wrist, and rotate the pick, so it's a bit of a learning curve, but I can already feel the skill ceiling increase tenfold.

I use a small amount of 'Simply Tacky' and stick the pick to my index finger. Don't use Dap BlueStik as it sticks too well. With ST the pick will stay stuck to your finger even if you take your thumb off of it, so you can thumb pick instead of hybrid picking if you want. You'll never have ot worry about the pick shifting position again. I am amazed that nobody to my knowledge has ever posted this idea before.

This didn't really help me much, but I hoped that it helped others out of my situation. My picking hand sweats, and if I don't grip or hold the pick, it either rotates (hence what we call relaxing while you play something that you can't relax to due to its intensity, and for me this would be rock and metal), or it just slips back, or it just straight up falls out the hand due to myself not having a good enough grip on it.

Pick shifting is very common but it's not something that a lot of experienced players think to pass on to learners, probably because they have gotten past the problem and is now in muscle memory. I think this is only half of the solution, because if you still get even a small amount of shifting it eventually needs correcting. That's why you need to be able to manipulate the pick back into position while playing, otherwise you are just delaying the point where you need to stop and reset. Doing what you suggest puts one in a position where this would be easier to correct since the pick is only slightly out of position. BTW a "rigid" pick position is also not conducive to altering tone by adjusting pick hold/angle on the fly, so pick manipulation is definitely a required skill if you are seeking that. As usual it's a trade off between simple playing and interesting playing.

Thanks for the video. I'm sure this will help out. I think the most frustrating thing about the pick twisting issue for me is that it doesn't happen consistently. If I get tired or distracted, even nervous, it tends to spring up and get worse the more frustrated I get. I'm glad to have a place to work from now so that I can avoid pick catastrophe in the future haha

I want to add that the issue for me - I think - is excessive movement of my hand and fingers. I think when I'm doing a lot of jumping between strings, I end up overcompensating for deficiencies in my wrist technique by rotating my thumb.

Very good insights. I’ve had the problem of my pick rotating and not being able to flip it around in mid song. Also, I’ve seen where there are two supposedly correct ways to hold a pick. The index finger points down or points at a 45° angle to the pick direction. You recommend that the index finger points in the same direction as the pick.

Best advice for this problem. I play a Greek instrument called a bouzouki and lately have had a problem with spinning pick. This advice is dead on . Once the motion in my thumb and index finger stops the pick stays in the same position coupled with the attack angle . It just will take some time to adjust and get used to playing a bit differently. Thanks for posting this video, all the other tricks won’t help if you are holding it wrong , squiggling the thumb and index finger or attacking at too much of an angle.

I have to say im still new. I had a real hard time finding a comfortable position to hold the pic. To someone who just hears music and doesn't really listen I sound pretty good. I could hear and feel the pick stumble across the strings or it would spin. Then that would mess up my fretting hand and i would be a note or more off on a chord. My timing would stuffer. Not a bunch. Enough to frustrate the hell out of me. Kinda ruin the experience. It's really held me back. After maybe a half hr my chords are ringing out better. My tone is better. My control is better. It doesn't feel natural yet. Like everything else it will come. Like i said in the earlier post this is the first video that made sense to me. So thanks.

Thank you for this lesson. In my case its not an issue of a spinning pick but of even down- and upstrokes. By gathering information about this problem, I found out that a human hand weighs about 1,5 kg....which may really increase downstroke energy and make the upstroke harder....just to consider.
