Spiral Power IS Real | Gurren Lagann Video Essay

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann has become my favorite anime of all time over the last few years, and that's mostly because of how well I feel its themes fit into my life and the world. But there's a couple other video essays and reviews I've watched/read that make the point that certain decision would only be right in a world where spiral power existed, and that confused me because - spiral power is real.
In this video, I explain why I see spiral power as "real," why I think others don't see it that way, and generally just give an overview over the messages of this amazing anime.

Kamina isn’t dumb, he knew all his big talk and reckless personality was digging his own grave But he kept going, because he knew that he wasn’t gonna be the one to change everything, he knew that it’d be Simon who’d do it. Which is why he had to die to tell that to Simon.

Nope. Kamina didn't do it just for Simon. That came 2nd. What came first for Kamina was to believe in himself and believe that he could climb to Heaven. Let me ask you this: if Simon were never there, would Kamina still have attempted to break out of the village? Would he still have fought the gunman that came crashing down? Of course he would, because that's who Kamina is. He didn't risk his life because it would make simon a better leader. He did it because that's what HE believed was the right thing to do. His self-belief runs off on people and Simon happened to be there for Kamina's ride so it rubbed off on him.
@VoidSpirals
@VoidSpirals 3 ай бұрын
@@Socrates526 I disagree. Simon wasn’t just there when Kamina was, Kamina’s entire motivation (motivation, not reason) for reaching the surface was because of Simon. He openly admits this when talking to yoko, saying that it was because of Simon he was able to put on a brave face. Without Simon, the Lagann would have never been found. Kamina and Nia were the only ones who saw Simon for what he truly was, except Kamina tried to tell this to Simon in such a way that got him killed and made Simon dependent. (Which Nia fixed by seeing Simon and telling him that he’s not his bro). When you look back, this is what Kamina was trying to tell Simon all along. “Believe in the you that believes in yourself”, wanting Simon to pilot the Lagann, and putting his faith in him when in a situation where only Simon could come up with a way to solve it. It’s really symbiotic in a way, Simon saw Kamina the same way Kamina saw Simon.
@danielcarty6057
@danielcarty6057 Ай бұрын
@VoidSpirals I see what you’re saying, and I would agree that many of the inciting incidents would not have happened if not for Simon, and that Kamina saw potential in him. But banking solely on Simon to succeed was not wisdom on his part, and drawing support from Simon - his talent, his hidden drive to succeed, even extra incentive to be successful because of his friend - did not change the fact that he had planned to go to the top to follow, and later surpass, his father. What we see in Kamina is a leader who pushed his agenda as an ideal, not a desire - allowing him to seek the benefit of others while attempting to reach his goal through sharing that ideal. The penultimate episode displayed what Kamina looked like without his ideal, and it looked was a very different man. The former was a man not afraid to die for what he stood for, the latter afraid to stand what Kamina ultimately died for. But he was still mentoring and fostering Simon - honing and using his talent. That tells you that his drive to succeed in HIS goals, that was what impassioned Kamina. And his reckless and somewhat ignorant behavior, as well as his sense of honor and trust that they could survive without him, made him believe he was replaceable if he drove his efforts too far. Simon did not betray that trust, but Kamina did not reach his goal. He is still an inspiration for those who are struggling with motivation, as Kamina is someone who lived with integrity and drive.

I watched gurren lagaan on the request of a good dear friend while I was wallowing in the depression of my wife and child dying, I felt utterly alone and had nothing to live for or any reason to live. Gurren Lagaan woke me up to a reason to keep pushing on, even in this cruel world. And honestly, I probably wouldn't be here if it wasn't for that friend and for gurren lagaan.

TTGL is, without a doubt, the Best Anime Ever. I've been able to make some hard decisions because i kept it in mind, and it hasn't just helped me when faced with insurmountable problems. i think I'm genuinely a more patient, wiser person for having seen it. i have nothing but respect for writers like Kazuki Nakashima who embue their work with such unrelenting positivity. i recently rewatched promare with some friends, and despite how heavy handed it is i realized i missed one of the themes in the movie the first time, which is the idea that you should never lose hope of finding alternative solutions. i haven't seen many of his other works, but i wouldn't be surprised if that theme is consistent throughout his work. it's so rare to find such a hopeful message. speaking of hopeful messages, you have no idea how happy it makes me to see people like you keeping analysis videos like this alive, even if you post sporadically (i'm a uni student so i definitely understand how hard it is to have time for side stuff). this genre was really influential to me when i was in high school, and even if i haven't seen a good one in months it's still close to my heart in a way. keep turning your drill man, i can't wait to see how far down the youtube hole you can dig.

i've only seen the big stories nakashima has written with imaishi (TTGL, kill la kill, promare) but i like how all of them have that common idea of finding an alternative solution. it's always debating between 2 extremes, but by the end they find some sort of more nuanced middle path and i feel like that applies really well to many real life debates but also thanks for the kind words! media analysis is obviously pretty important to me as well and support like this keeps the drill turning

I love that you say that corniness is important to have in media. Sometimes we need stuff that is just blindingly optimistic because it's so easy to get bogged down by all the problems in the world and how it feels like we don't have the power to do anything about it. Maybe if we all let ourselves be corny, be silly, be endlessly driven to improve, maybe then we can break past all the things holding us as a collective down. Maybe we as humanity need to (metaphorically but also sorta literally) come together in the same way the characters do at the end of the series, bring all our wills together and force the systems that hold us down and tell us we can't do better to change, or destroy those systems if they refuse.

Love guren lagan. As an adhd kid this was something i really klicked with. The hyperactivety and over the top energy of kamina was awesome. Then he died and I had to figure out what the rest of the show was actually about. Strangly enough it had the same impact as Berserk did later in my life. Seeing despair and CHOOSING to fight it and actually find peace an joy. I think it comes down to a lot of what most lifelessons get right. We know all these messages, they are told to us again and again. What makes us really understand these messages is a moment of realisation. Art is one way that can make you realy feel and reallise what a certain concept really means. This is the real power of media. For instance, knowing that a lot of people suffer is one thing. Now really think about how many times you yourself suffer. Now really immagine your family has these same feelings. Now expand that immagination to the people in your street. Now expand that to the people in your town. Now to your state, to your country, to the rest of the world. By really engaging with this idea you begin to realize more, even though you probably knew this. This playing with scale and ideas, always pushing further, expanding your realization is what guren lagan is so great at.

Your talk on politics is really starting to have an effect on me. Right now I’m currently at the “I don’t give much of a damn about politics” phase of my life, especially after seeing the amount of arguments and the division it’s causing, but after watching your chainsaw man video and this one, I’m really starting to have some introspection regarding this matter and thinking if me staying in ignorance is only me adding to the problem of things like misinformation and controlling the masses and pitting them against each other. I think I have come across a hidden gem of a channel

This show proved that you do not need 60 or 100 episodes in order to be considered A Masterpiece. Every show has their own and the creators have it each to their own too. However, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann tells us that as long as you Believe In Yourself, Almost Anything In Possible. This Experience helps you get out of your demotivated state and gives you The Drive to continue with whatever you want to do in life. You going back into Politics because of this show is A Prime Example of it. 👍

Your life is your own spiral and in life we spiral together as a people. We will not always go in the same direction, but we have to walk our own path. You will feel doubt as your path intensifies and pushes you to your limit. Maybe breaks you, but you are still on your spiral and need to keep focusing as best you can. When you break you need to take a break and recover and move on. That is a lesson on your spiral. That you can break and not break yourself in your quest. Even when you achieve your goal there is always more. Make the impossible possible at your pace. Remember: life will not let you march at your own speed. You must make life allow you by doing the labor to achieve that. I believe in you.

Kamina believed when no one else did! He was the spark that reignited the ability to re-acknowledge the spiral power once again. Kamina was a madman. and was viewed and treated as such, in his own mind he may have thought the same, but he stuck to his beliefs, he couldn't question himself, if he did none of this would have ever been possible....

Currently rewatching the series - it's been a few years since I actually sat down with it. Toward the end, it's observed that Spiral Power is tied to the concept of DNA - in other words, it's a power intrinsic to life itself, and which grows with our ability to adapt as species. Furthermore, if we understand the Anti-Spiral's motivation to be the spread of despair throughout the multiverse, then we must interpret the end goal of Spiral Power to be the spread of hope - that is, the very idea that we can grow, change, and adapt, and that by doing so, we may ultimately overcome any obstacle, no matter how dire or monumental. Hope doesn't just wish for a better future - hope enables us to make that future a reality, to overcome despair and embrace the best possible outcomes of the opportunities set before us. Hope takes the greatest risks, against the greatest odds, in order to win the greatest prize. As Simon said, "As long as the chance of success is greater than zero, I'll treat is as though it's a 100% chance!" That is the drill that may just pierce the heavens. 😎 #LiveWithoutFear

_Gurren Lagann_ is an anime that, legitimately, made the kid-version of me more spiritual. I have a bit of a tangent, so please bear with me. Looking at a small candle and its flame, think of the sound it makes: like a quiet growling. As fire grows, this gets louder-rumbling growing increasingly deeper, such that furnaces create great roars through which nothing else can be heard. Now imagine what would be the sound of Sol, the Sun. The closest we've gotten to hearing such a sound, I think, is the roar of a spaceship engine-likely among the loudest noises ever created on this planet, barring either the Atom Bomb or the dinosaur extinction meteor. Such a roar-Earth-rupturing and sky-distorting-hearing it almost feels as though you've witnessed the presence of God. I highly recommend everyone to watch videos of the recent spaceship launch. The Sun is as a deity: timeless, boundless, all-consuming and directly responsible for the existence of life itself. Of all the planets in the Universe, only this one has life, and only because it both contains water *_while also_* being within close enough range of its Sun. This orb of inferno has burned for untold millennia and will continue for trillions more hereafter. What this has to do with _Gurren Lagann,_ is that Simon spends his entire childhood dreaming of this mythical sphere of light. To once finally erupt from beneath the earth to bear witness to its fire, and creates a society that works to strive ever eternally upward; rising beyond the Earth towards something even greater. And once its been reached, to keep rising beyond even that, thereafter. Onwards and upwards! Grit those teeth and make the impossible possible!

I first watched Gurren Lagaan 3 years ago, and like you, I was cynical about the show’s messages all the way until the very last episode. The show helped me evolve a bit towards the end of covid, but after a few months, I forgot about it due to my focus on my new pursuits in life. I then rewatched it 3 months ago, this time being 100% on board with its messages from day one, and that second watch is what I can say really has changed my life. The changes I’ve made since then have been harder than anything I’ve ever done in my 24 years of existence. Gurren Lagann, along with a couple other favorite shows of mine, have finally pushed me to the next level.

Spiral power in TTGL is very much an allegory for human willpower and pure determination but I do think there is a point where a human can become so advanced in their willpower and determination that they get the real life equivalent of spiral power. I think there is a development of sheer focus and discipline where someone has gone through enough shit where they effectively can achieve things that I've heard people say is not "genetically possible" and it's very fucking inspiring.

5 years ago, i gave up, heavily depressed, i had my taste of spiral power more then 10 years ago, but after that the fire died out. Eventually i managed to slowly with ups and downs get the fire back and now its fully back. I am now owner and co-owner of 2 social enterprises that work on local empowerment and with insane success of many other people who also have found their spiral power. Sometimes mine can overflow, but its kinda my nature xD. I work together with the local university, i work with people out of heavy poverty, i work with people that are pretty much high end elite. There is no min or max requirement of finding people with spiral power, its just that you meet the people with their hearts on fire and full on passionate feelings of wanting to develop mankind in a different way, where technology only supports us and we still decide what is good for us, where your voice matters and no matter what direction you come from you are welcome. As long as you are willing to fight for freedom.

The one thing Gurren Lagaan taught me is that.. when i'm at my lowest I need a friend who's got my back enough to come in and belt me one, just to remind me that stagnation hurts and as hard as moving forward might be, If there's a wall in our way then we smash it down, If there isn't a path, then we carve one ourselves, a path for those behind us! The dreams of those who've fallen! The hopes of those who'll follow ,Those two sets of dreams weave together into a double helix! so get your drill and lets move forward

I dont think kamina is dumb, i mean he is aware enough he needs to live what h preaches to get him message forward and convince them to empower themselves too. But yeah i mean studio trigger and stuff really hammer home their anarchism too, And while politics is frustrating and slow, and people die , really, its very much working together and yeah they even sho th problms that happen and are frustrating.and still its change and those who fight against a change for better for peoples rights ,

People minimize the universal truths of the human spirit whenever they see it in movie or shows because they've already given up on themselves after they stumbled and tried to get back up. Seeing someone say that you could have what you want in life if you use your fighting spirit makes them upset since it invalidates all the excuses they've made for themselves. So they just minimize the message and say "it's just a movie and it has a nice message, but real life isn't really like that." They say that even though they know deep down inside that real life actually is like that

A lot of people struggled and tried way harder than you could imagine or deal with literally impossible circumstance too and illnesses, deserved to succeed harder and would still be humbler about it. There is a cemetery of braver but unrecognized warriors who still failed miserably or had no choice but to give up to find peace they earned and deserved behind every single success, never forget that or undermine their souls or think your success or others reflect something or not.

Holy cow I'm litterally working on this exact type of video (right after I finish the one I'm making specifically about the themes of masculinity in Gurren Lagaan, both positive and negative) I'd love to know what you think so if you want I'll post a link to it when it's done, I'd love to know what you think of it! Thank you so much for making yours so that mine can be even better! (That's what spiral energy is all about after all! Growing and learning and connections with each other to grow, learn, itererate, evolve and above all always keep moving forward! 😁👍) Edit: Until I've made it though here's a link to a similar video about the philosophy of zenyatta from the video game overwatch! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mJORqs-nyMu0Y4U.html

I love your message and your personal story here, but dammit if I wasn't distracted as hell by your pronunciation of Lagann. You pronounce it like "le'GON" when in the show (original Japanese) they clearly pronounce it like "lah-gun" (with no stressed syllables).
