what do you do in case a part of the welding goes wrong. do you manually weld them? or reject that section of the pipe? What are the norms?

Little late to answer your question but if there is a flaw in the weld it is either fixed by hand welding it or if it can't be fixed the defect is cut off. They then can take 2 or 3 pieces that have been cut off and weld them to each other for one length of pipe.

You kick them out into a repair bay and they're repaired by hand/with sub arc depending on the amount of work and location.
